Medicine 2022 entry

Support thread for aspiring medics.

We want all our DCs to succeed, whatever their school type. We share knowledge to help them to achieve their goals, celebrate success and support if things don't go well.

As we press the "send and pay" buttons on UCAS, we wish all our DC the best of luck in this tough year with so much uncertainty.

That would be a turn up for the books @Monkey2001 😂

I am so pleased that next year DS2 is likely to apply for economics of some kind. One medical application is quite enough for me to deal with.

Needmoresleep · 17/12/2021 07:40

Sandy, I hate to say it but as a parent with one economist and one medic, economics applications can be just as brutal, especially if he is looking at the more mathematical courses or one of the Oxford economics variants. Worth looking at some of the current or older threads.

Good luck to everyone. These are still early days. DD had her three interviews in March. All sorts of strange things can happen after that: late interviews and offers, clearing etc. And then if your DCs get the grades, plenty get places on reapplication and odds should be better, as long as the latest wave of Covid does not lead to grade inflation and bulge years.

It does not make it any easier though, so Wine to their mums.

DS has just been told he's been put on hold by Bristol. He's feeling a bit pessimistic about his chances now as he felt his first interview with Leicester didn't go as well as hoped.

I'd heard of on hold decisions after interviews but not before.

[Waves at @Needmoresleep - fancy meeting you here! Smile ]

mumsneedwine · 17/12/2021 17:39

@Haffdonga Bristol do it every year. Just means they've looked at your application and it's in the system. I expect they'll give more interviews in January 🤞

Needmoresleep · 17/12/2021 17:40

Haff, I don’t know how accurate my information is, but I was told that Bristol got themselves into a real muddle last year, apparently ‘bribing’ some to defer, but still ending up with a ‘bulge’ of 60 students, which is causing problems with placements. So a shortage of placements, especially GP, where other medical schools are competing financially for places, and a need to mop up some of the overoffers from last year.

Bristol have always been slow but I wonder if they are being even more cautious this.

Has he considered SGUL clearing as a possible last ditch option? I am hearing good things about them, or rather that wfh and distancing is causing a loss of a collegiate spirit which is affecting medical professionals and students alike, so SGULs smallness is becoming a strength.

So glad I am done with University applications. Unfortunately DD is now determined on a very competitive field.

speedyhedgehog · 17/12/2021 17:45

@haffdonga my ds on hold for Bristol too. And his girlfriend. Hopefully many of them will get interviews in due course or Bristol's ucat cut off for this year will be very high. Keeping everything crossed here.

Haffdonga · 17/12/2021 17:49

Thanks for the positive answers and yes, Need he'd definitely try for SGUL clearing ( if it's there and Plan A has gone pear-shaped). It was one of his long-listed options anyway.

Monkey2001 · 17/12/2021 18:09

@Haffdonga what was his UCAT score? I think the cut off will be between 2840 and 2870 based on what has happened elsewhere.

DS1 thought he had a bad interview at Leicester but got an early offer, it is so hard to tell!

DD has an interview from Barts and is on hold for Bristol. Do you think it means they have to listen to Vivaldi on a Hammond organ until the New Year?

SandyBayley · 17/12/2021 18:35

Another one on hold for Bristol at 2880.

DD 'I never wanted to go to Bristol anyway' 😉

Haffdonga · 17/12/2021 20:24

DS was 2940 so he should be fine by that measure but as a grad may be not be considered differently if they decide they don't want so many oldies,

Haffdonga · 17/12/2021 20:24

may be I mean

Monkey2001 · 17/12/2021 21:14

@Haffdonga I don't think grads have a different cut off at Bristol, so he should be in the next tranche. Has he applied for any A101 courses?

Another one on hold for Bristol at 2940.....

Dagbonunion · 18/12/2021 09:25

Barts have started sending invites, luckily DD got an invite, any one heard from them.
Good luck to all

KingscoteStaff · 18/12/2021 10:57

DD has interview from Barts, but no date yet.

KingscoteStaff · 18/12/2021 11:02

She and her entire sports team are stewarding at the massive Stamford Bridge Booster event. Not happy about her extremely unflattering high-vis vest…

coffeeandbiscuittime · 21/12/2021 16:04

Liverpool interview offer received today. 3 out of 4 is good, shame about Newcastle as that was her preferred choice - now it will just be a waiting game until March - not sure my nerves will cope😂.
Good luck to all and hope we all have a lovely Christmas.

notmedicmum · 21/12/2021 17:28

Liverpool interview invitation here too. Waiting for one more which hopefully we should get in a couple of weeks.

SandyBayley · 21/12/2021 18:03

Great news @notmedicmum and @coffeeandbiscuittime - and good to get a piece of good news before everything shuts down for Christmas 🤶

mumsneedwine · 21/12/2021 18:30

Lovely news 😊. Happy Christmas and hope 2022 brings lots of v lovely offers.

Iwab82 · 24/12/2021 08:02

Son has had 4 interview invites now. 1 interview completed, 3 to go. My nerves are shattered. He was lucky he read the advice on here and on Student Room to apply tactically. Wishing everyone the best of luck.

SandyBayley · 24/12/2021 08:43

Excellent news @Iwab82 - what are the four?

Monkey2001 · 24/12/2021 08:56

Congratulations on the interviews @Iwab82

I was hoping to see an offer or 2 from King's on here before Christmas, maybe they have slowed down. Hope you all have a lovely Christmas.
