Support thread for aspiring medics.

We want all our DCs to succeed, whatever their school type. We share knowledge to help them to achieve their goals, celebrate success and support if things don't go well.

As we press the "send and pay" buttons on UCAS, we wish all our DC the best of luck in this tough year with so much uncertainty.

HI @Monkey2001, yes UEA and Plymouth were both rejections. It is horrible to see how disappointed he is but he has to focus on his A levels now and make his mind up after that. Thanks for your help, he at least stood a bit of a chance.

SandyBayley · 14/12/2021 22:45

@Monkey2001 - how did the Manchester interview go?

Looks like the Newcastle interviews have fizzled out. Can't quite work out what the cut off was though. I saw a non-contextual first time home applicant rejected with 2,840.

SandyBayley · 14/12/2021 22:49

@Hopeful201 - sorry to hear it's not working out for your DS. Really tough for him after a difficult two years.

kackle · 15/12/2021 07:03

Newcastle interview yesterday. Seemed to go well.

Edinburgh and Nottingham interviews mid January.

Monkey2001 · 15/12/2021 07:49

@Hopeful201 so sorry to hear that, but obviously he shouldn't assume that he would bomb interviews, particularly with an extra year of maturity. I don't know whether it is possible to work out from the data UCAS publish how much better the success rate is for gap be year applicants, but if he can try not to let the experience of this year get him down, he can get some good work experience and do well at interview.

I don't think DS's Manchester interview was great. The interviewer at the first station was harsh and unsmiling and knocked his confidence. The others were nicer, but he felt he would have got on better if the difficult person hadn't been on the first station. He is glad that Newcastle is panel! I think the SGUL asynchronous interviews just be easier as you all get the

.... same interview experience, so less luck involved.

Daughter was rejected by Newcastle yesterday. Home student, not partners, UCAT 2840. Disappointed but she has got Manchester, Sheffield and waiting on Liverpool. She didn't apply to Nottingham as I work at Derby ( too close to home!)
I am a very stressed parental lurker!
Good luck to all those waiting.

SandyBayley · 15/12/2021 12:42

Sorry to hear that @coffeeandbiscuittime but great that she has interviews at at Manchester and Sheffield.

Monkey2001 · 15/12/2021 20:35

Sorry to hear about Newcastle @coffeeandbiscuittime, but she will definitely get Liverpool.

Gah! Still waiting to hear from Cardiff and Nottingham. Trying to just roll with it as (apparently) me repeatedly asking if she’s checked her junk mail isn’t helping 🤣

Chunni240 · 15/12/2021 21:33

@Toofaroutallmylife I have also been told off to stop asking every day 😂😂. DS us still waiting to hear from Leicester and Southampton.

Monkey2001 · 15/12/2021 21:44

@Toofaroutallmylife I think you may need to assume the worst for Cardiff, there are loads of people with 27/27 waiting, the process of reviewing PSs for fit with Cardiff requirements seems to have been arbitrary. Cardiff really isn't a safe choice for anybody, with the possible exception of Welsh applicants and their process is decidedly opaque.

If you want to put yourself out of misery, you can phone Cardiff admissions and give your UCAS number and they will tell you if you've been rejected. They have already notified all successful dentistry interview candidates, but won't be updating UCAS with rejections until after the holidays.

Toofaroutallmylife · 16/12/2021 09:24

From TSR (my new hangout!) there seem to be a lot of people still waiting- apparently Cardiff have said they’ll hear by the end of next week. Bracing myself to deal with a Christmas Eve rejection- just venting on here, really

Monkey2001 · 16/12/2021 09:41

@Toofaroutallmylife Cardiff have been saying "by Friday" for a few weeks now. If she would prefer to know by Christmas, I agree with @sunnyandshare that it may be best to phone Medicine admissions - I suspect the generic "you will know by Friday" response is coming from the general admissions number.

There is still hope for all still waiting, DD with this scores was not hopeful 6.6 3.3 3, 3A.
Brighton interview in Jan, not hopeful for UCL with this scores.
Anyone going in that direction?

There are lots of interviews to come from lots of places, some have finished invitations (Newcastle, Sheffield, Oxbridge, Exeter) but I don't think Southampton has even started? I think Liverpool has barely started.

HYMS interview is done. DD said it wasn’t quite what she was expecting but weirdly enjoyed it. Everyone bar one was really friendly and encouraging. She’s happy with what she’s done. Yay!

@Monkey2001 I spoke to Liverpool admissions yesterday, they said they have a record number of applicants this year so haven't even finished the short listing yet. The interviews will be sent out in batches until the end of January.

I spoke to Liverpool a few days ago too. They interviewed a few high UCAT candidates this month but, as you said, they will be doing interview batches through January. I don’t think they will be doing them by surname this time - I got the impression they were going to interview by UCAT score, highest UCAT first.

notmedicmum · 16/12/2021 17:21

@Monkey2001 Southampton interviews start 28th January with interview invitations being sent out 2 weeks before

SandyBayley · 16/12/2021 17:23

DD has had an email from Leeds to say they're not expecting to send out interview invites until the New Year.

Monkey2001 · 16/12/2021 20:40

@SandyBayley all being well your DD might have an Oxford offer before any of the other interviews!
