Apologies if I've done this wrong! I seemed to have filled up the last thread, hopefully the abbreviated title is ok!

Thank you @bendmeoverbackwards. She was a bit brighter yesterday . 2 more days of mini exams to go.. I will be glad when it’s over. She wants Durham. You are right- we just need to hope that she’s done enough in her other assessments/ coursework.

MidLifeCrisis007 · 13/05/2021 07:53

@chopc

Congrats on the St A offer *@Justanotherday3*

So it is four of our DC's who are hoping to study History at Durham?

So History at Durham is mini @chopc, mini @Justanotherday3, mini @Longtimenewsee and mini @MidLifeCrisis007 then?

That said mini me is not actually that mini....and he'll be doing History and MFL.

He's another hoping that travel opens up in more European countries. He's got a job lined up working in the kids club of a beach resort in Greece, as and when we can travel again.

Longtimenewsee · 13/05/2021 08:32

No @MidLifeCrisis007 it’s Chemistry ..Not History for my my dd

jano69 · 13/05/2021 08:49

mini jano69 hoping to do history at Durham too!

MidLifeCrisis007 · 13/05/2021 09:10

@jano69

mini jano69 hoping to do history at Durham too!
Of course!!! We were only PM'ing about it last night! Doh!!!

I'm quite excited to go back up there with him in September to see how it's changed since the mid/late 80s. I haven't been back once since graduating.

Revengeofthepangolins · 13/05/2021 12:41

@bendmeoverbackwards

Blimey, is St Andrew's taking anyone??
Just what I was thinking!
chopc · 13/05/2021 12:53

Great to hear about the job @MidLifeCrisis007 . Told my DS I will match whatever he earns in the summer ...... let's see

He has booked to join a friend for a weekend in Portugal in Sept. Hopefully by then Portugal will be accepting us

MidLifeCrisis007 · 13/05/2021 13:11

I've no idea what game St Andrews are playing but to have sat on so many strong applicants decisions for 6-8 months only to reject 99% of them seems very strange. (check our TSR to see evidence of this)

I shall certainly advise my daughter not to apply there in the next UCAS round. There is no rhyme or reason to their decision making and their timing absolutely sucks.

I wonder if they will be short of students come September?
Parker231 · 13/05/2021 13:50

Looks like St Andrews are going to be missing out on a lot of strong students. Their loss and other Unis gain.

bendmeoverbackwards · 13/05/2021 13:51

If anyone is familiar with Bristol, we are planning on visiting next week and stay overnight. Does anyone know if Lewis Mead or Haymarket is the best location? They both have Premier Inns.

Needmoresleep · 13/05/2021 14:57

Parking in Bristol City Centre can be difficult. Worth sorting out in advance.

BigWoollyJumpers · 13/05/2021 16:51

Sorry to hear about so many late rejections from the Scottish unis. This year really has been an outlier, and in particular, it seems, for History. I wonder why? History is always popular, but also has high numbers in terms of places. It will be really interesting to see what comes up in clearing, and whether some unis find themselves without enough students.

Despite booking the Exeter Open day, I think we have now given up. We were due to go down by train, but now with the cancellations of the Hitachi trains, with only cross country now available and lots of stopping, it just doesn't seem worth it. Poor old DD. We shall have to see if we can drive down over the summer at our leisure, and maybe stay a couple of nights just so she (and we) can get a feel for it.

mumsneedwine · 13/05/2021 19:43

@bendmeoverbackwards for the Uni the central area is best - don't know the place names. There is a Marriott near by and there is a car park right next to Orchard House (Tenchard ?) which is useful.

SeasonFinale · 13/05/2021 19:52

You need to recall that Scottish unis are now restricting the numbers of RUK students. Further last year St A had to put up students in Dundee and they had to travel in so hardly the St A experience and then obviously locked down.

Chopc you may regret that offer. DS earned £5k last Summer.

We stayed at the Isis down in the waterfront area when we went to Bristol on day in June 2019. Very central, great places to eat and walking distance to the uni buildings etc (albeit uphill).

mumsneedwine · 13/05/2021 19:55

Ooh yes, the ISIS is v close to Uni. It's a 10 minute walk up the hill (try and go via Christmas steps as it's v pretty). Can walk to Clifton in about 20 minutes to see the bridge. We are off on Sunday to visit DD before exams.

SATSmadness · 13/05/2021 20:01

I might be wrong but I think @SeasonFinale mentioned that it's believed St Andrews had a problem with numbers this year due to accommodation restrictions caused by the increase in applicants meeting the grade requirements last year needing to be accepted in 2020 or deferred to this year.

SATSmadness · 13/05/2021 20:01

Oops, crossed post there

PresentingPercy · 13/05/2021 20:30

Hotel du Vin is nearer to the university than most. Highly rated on booking.com too.

Historygeek05 · 13/05/2021 20:33

@bendmeoverbackwards have been lurking on this thread as DD2 is thinking of applying to Oxford next year. I know Bristol quite well. The Premier Inn at Lewins Mead is pretty well placed for the uni and easily walkable via the Christmas Steps.

Historygeek05 · 13/05/2021 20:34

Can confirm that Hotel du Vin in Bristol is very nice! Also in Lewins Mead.

PresentingPercy · 13/05/2021 20:34

I remember when DD was thinking of applying to Scottish universities over 10 years ago, the school advised they were having a lot of problems getting offers from them. This is a perfect storm this year and it seems successful applications seem cyclical. However to see so many rejections this late is poor.

321zyx · 13/05/2021 20:51

mini @321zyx is also aiming for History at Durham. This is having been rejected after the final Oxbridge interview hurdle, plus the very strange and very late St A 'rejection'! He's insuring with a much lower than expected, or advertised, (very definitely not contextual) offer from Edinburgh!

@bendmeoverbackwards check out the Marriott Hotel City Centre they give a special rate on the adjacent multi storey car park.

Well done @321zyx DC!

Hope all our DCs get the grades for their first choice!
