Sounds lovely @KingscoteStaff 🥰

SpringSparrow · 20/08/2021 12:22

There were no lifts in my dd’s halls. Her room was in the top floor, very narrow stairwell and corridor and everyone arriving at the same time slot. Initially parents were not allowed to help with carrying luggage as no parents allowed in the accommodation. The freps also did not help with luggage, they were waiting outside the accommodation directing.
In terms of affability, the staff were affable through a computer screen! No face to face contact with college staff, all over zoom, only two in person tutorials in ten weeks, everything else from your bedroom. Strict mealtimes with only your household. Such a miserable experience. My dd liked the porters.
Fingers crossed it will be more normal next term.

chopc · 20/08/2021 13:10

So sorry to hear of your DD experience @SpringSparrow . It's so disappointingly. Hope she gets to enjoy this year

Meery · 20/08/2021 13:28

@SpringSparrow your poor DD. Which college was this, or don’t you want to say? Hopefully this year will be much better for her.

SpringSparrow · 20/08/2021 19:15

@Meery it was a popular college in the Bailey, although I expect it was similar at a lot of the colleges. Freshers was abandoned when one of the freps tested positive for Covid and then it just carried on from there, with isolations, food dropped in the stairwell, not allowed out of the building except for a 30 min exercise slot, 15 in her block had Covid at one point! No lectures face to face. 20 min food slots three times a day in the dining hall with the household when not isolating.
@chopc thank you, I hope she had a better experience too, and a better experience for all of them. I am a bit worried as to what it’s going to be like. I see the library is saying you have to book slots and sit at your assigned desk! My dd survived the year and passed the year with a high mark, but she hasn’t had any normal university experience. 😢

Longtimenewsee · 20/08/2021 22:45

I’m sorry to hear that @SpringSparrow- you must have been very worried about her .
Im very much hoping that Dd will be ok and that they all ( including the years above) have a better time of it this year.

NCTDN · 20/08/2021 22:48

Hi can I join? Not sure if this is just for current and 2021 starters? DD is on a tour on Sunday and looking to apply for 2022.

SpringSparrow · 20/08/2021 23:24

Thanks @Longtimenewsee. Have you said which college your dd was originally allocated to? When we went up to collect my dd’s belongings she met up with a school friend who is starting this year, and had a look around his allocated college, one of the hill colleges. She hadn’t ventured up that way before.

Longtimenewsee · 21/08/2021 00:20

She’s been allocated a bailey college @SpringSparrow. I don’t know if she’ll keep it though .. she’ll be very glad to get a bit of certainty about allocation in the next few weeks.

NCTDN · 23/08/2021 07:50

We're currently in Durham looking for 2022. It's lovely!

Longtimenewsee · 23/08/2021 09:36

@NCTDN
It is! Is your Dc doing a tour?

KingscoteStaff · 23/08/2021 11:08

@NCTDN make sure you see the wonderful sports centre (today featuring DS and his fellow rugby types starting pre-season training) and take a few minutes to soak up the cathedral!

OnTheBenchOfDoom · 23/08/2021 15:41

Ds has college confirmation from Durham, his first choice college.

chopc · 23/08/2021 15:46

That's great news @OnTheBenchOfDoom

libbytrois · 23/08/2021 17:06

Mine got their confirmation too - same as the one they got in the original allocation. Not first choice at the outset, but pleased uncertainty removed.

fevafeva · 23/08/2021 17:27

Hi - my daughter has just been reallocated to St Aidans & is concerned as not even on her list! What is it really like. She is sporty & not remotely arty & very worried how she will fit in. Also is it really a long way from everything? Thanks!

NCTDN · 23/08/2021 17:28

We did the tour @KingscoteStaff but never went to the sports facilities as no one on the group was looking at Sport at a competitive level. I've fallen in love with the place though.

NCTDN · 23/08/2021 17:35

I'm just looking at accommodation prices. Are all colleges the same cost plus or minus the supplements?

WentworthMillerMad · 23/08/2021 18:11

Yes my son got his college confirmed today as well, he’s really happy. Wasn’t his original first choice but it’s his preferred.
Good luck everyone, I think we will be moving him in Sunday 19th September ready for freshers week?

chopc · 23/08/2021 18:35

@WentworthMillerMad isn't freshers week starting on 27th Sept?

Peaseblossum22 · 23/08/2021 18:36

Same here , rather awkward as he is isolating g in his room so it’s been a barrage of phone calls all day whilst he fills in his accommodation preferences and the enrolment forms . Not sure we have got all the finance questions right but if he’s made a mistake I am sure it can be sorted. .

Peaseblossum22 · 23/08/2021 18:38

Ds college says arrivals will be in allocated slots on 25th and 26th with some others during the week if you can’t do weekend for some reason . International students earlier . Freshers week starts Sunday 26th, you can go in the induction planner and put in college and dept and it’s already partly populated , suddenly feels real

Longtimenewsee · 23/08/2021 18:46

No news here.. guess that means that Dd will lose her first choice allocation?

WentworthMillerMad · 23/08/2021 18:57

Ah yes weekend 25th / 26th is right. That’s good as it’s September weekend here in glasgow, bank holiday so more time to walk around the house wondering where he is Grin

KingscoteStaff · 23/08/2021 19:09

@fevafeva DS says that Aidans has the best fashion show! Not sure whether that refers to the models, the clothes, the sound system or the refreshments! Also apparently Aidans is ridiculously over represented on the hockey and netball teams due to the effect of their hill on leg muscles!!
