Hopefully this is in the right place?

OP posts:

So today I sent her some information on Imposter Syndrome. She is warming to Murray Edwards (or is it Medwards?). I think she will come round, and I am so happy and so proud. But I can't believe that I had no part in the journey. Oh well, good for her.

Good!Smile
One of the positives my DD came up with was that MEdwards had chosen her from the available 'fish' in the pool. Not sure if this is accurate but her understanding is that the women's colleges get first dibs on the girls in the pool. She was also relieved that it would mean she wouldn't need to interact with the 'train wreck' interviewer again.Grin

FlyingSquid · 26/01/2021 15:07

‘Murray Edwards or is it Medwards?’

It’s still New Hall to me. Can’t be doing with these newfangled names.

DahliaMacNamara · 26/01/2021 17:33

Ohhhhh, New Hall. I wondered why I hadn't heard of Medwards.

ImsorryWilson · 26/01/2021 17:51

Ds has now received further details for his natsci Churchill offer.

A* Further Maths
A Maths [yes, that way round]
A* and A for physics and chemistry in any order.

Thankfully EPQ doesn't count as that got massively screwed up in a regrade and school are still trying to appeal it....

It's a bit annoying when they do that with the Maths/Further Maths isn't it because there are not many of them that get A star in Further Maths and an A in maths! My DS has got a A*AB offer!
ImsorryWilson · 26/01/2021 18:05

definitely odd but DS seems unfazed.

Jalfrezi · 26/01/2021 19:25

Just wondered (as I can't keep track from the 6 Oxbridge threads) but were there any other successful applicants for history (or joint honours history) at either O or C?

goodbyestranger · 26/01/2021 19:37

LaundryFairy's DC is at least one for Oxford.

Not sure if chilldonaldchill's DC is another for Cambridge?

I'm a bit lost too - thre were certainly loads of history applicants this year on the thread, overtaking mathematicians for once!

LaundryFairy · 26/01/2021 19:44

Yes, DS had an offer for History at Oxford - and your DC too @Jalfrezi?

DeRigueurMortis · 26/01/2021 19:56

DS has also had his offer through.

It's the standard AAA.

LaundryFairy · 26/01/2021 19:56

Just looked back @Jalfrezi - your DD is doing ancient and modern history isn’t she? Anyone else left in the history club?

Chilldonaldchill · 26/01/2021 20:03

Yes DD has an offer for history from C. We've spent lots of today looking at the new college online and going on video tours. It looks nice. Slightly annoying to have gone from the cheapest colleges (apparently) to one of the 5 most expensive but still grateful that it's happened at all.
LaundryFairy · 26/01/2021 20:18

That’s great @Chilldonaldchill - what grades does your DD need for her offer?

Chilldonaldchill · 26/01/2021 20:56

@LaundryFairy

That’s great *@Chilldonaldchill* - what grades does your DD need for her offer?
She hasn't been told yet. She's under the impression that they won't change their standard offer (A* A A) but I don't know if that's the case.
Jalfrezi · 26/01/2021 21:27

Good to see others in the history camp @LaundryFairy @Chilldonaldchill and Congratulations to your DS and DD. And yes, DD is ancient and modern history. You are right @goodbyestranger there were quite a few on the thread.
Is it normal to have to wait for the offer grade requirements to come through @Chilldonaldchill? Hopefully nothing too onerous to achieve when you finally hear. DD has the standard AAA which should be fine barring nothing disastrous happening.

LaundryFairy · 26/01/2021 21:35

Just out of curiosity @Jalfrezi has your DD studied classics before or will it be new to her? I ask because DS considered applying to ancient and modern but hasn’t studied ancient before so decided he might be taking a bit of a risk.

Chilldonaldchill · 26/01/2021 21:51

@Jalfrezi it seems that some colleges have sent offer emails and said "we'll follow this up with the details" and others have sent them at the same time. I don't know how normal it is - I read that they used to send letters with the details but aren't this year. I know that dd's friends who have offers don't know the details of them yet either.

DS got a "you have an offer, details to follow" email yesterday.

Today Track got updated with the offer details (which were standard for his subject).

I'm not sure if that's "normal" but it's how we got the news (Cambridge: Churchill).

Chilldonaldchill · 27/01/2021 08:38

@goldenlilliesdaffodillies just to say - my daughter spoke to someone else last night and now knows 3 people who were pooled to Murray Edwards, all of whom are lovely and all very different from each other.

ofteninaspin · 27/01/2021 08:59

Waiting for offer details from C is normal. At least, DS's offer details came out a day or so later than his actual offer last year.
One of DD's lovely friends was pooled to Medwards for MML and is having a great time. (Medwards has some rather lovely second year houses too.) Two other friends received a C offer for Engineering and an O offer for Biology and both chose to accept Bristol instead. There definitely will be equally able students at other universities.

SeasonFinale · 27/01/2021 09:18

"There definitely will be equally able students at other universities"

Which of course is always the case because many equally able students do not (1) apply to Oxbridge (2) apply but don't get offers as evidenced on this thread and the previous year's threads in the same vein rather than being offer holders who decide to go elsewhere.

The adjective DD applied most to people she's met at Cambridge, both in medwards and elsewhere, is 'lovely'.Grin

Yes. It would actually be a really bad thing for U.K. universities in general if the oxbridge (and elsewhere) selection process was a perfect sifting system by some particular over narrow criteria!
Jalfrezi · 27/01/2021 09:55

@LaundryFairy DD studies Latin A'level and whilst that is half language and half literature, she has had a taste of the historical aspect, loves it and has read widely on it. The A'level basically opened her eyes to a whole area of history she would otherwise not have thought about and I would say she veers more to ancient than modern.
For your DS though, the Oxford straight history course goes very early indeed.

ofteninaspin · 27/01/2021 10:04

Absolutely, Errol and Season. It was not my intent to imply that only those who applied to Oxbridge were able students. I am sorry for any offence caused by my careless sentence.
