For those interested and moving over from the St Andrews thread (that became not about St Andrews)

Quite a sizeable group of languages applicants on this thread - good to have some support. We don't know anyone else IRL applying for languages (dd is at a specialist maths/science comprehensive, so I think it's a novelty for them too).

@Tenpastseven - dd is applying for the BA Modern Languages joint honours at Bristol.

Vargas · 13/10/2020 19:25

@Tenpastseven good question, ds is applying for BA Spanish/Portuguese at Bristol (and Kings and Southampton) as he's only doing one A level language.

fabtasticmrpox · 13/10/2020 19:26

@Tenpastseven

Hi *@Vargas*. Welcome.

Do those who have offers from Bristol (sorry I’ve lost track a bit and am confused with other Oxbridge thread possibly) have your DC applied for BA Modern Languages it for Joint Honours (he Spanish/Portuguese)?

Dd has applied for joint honours in English lit and French.

She's had another offer come through -Cardiff. Her course was in clearing this year so I'm not surprised.

It's hard not having visited any of the unis , I do hope they can. I often read on here that dcs change order of preference once they've visited.

Vargas · 13/10/2020 19:31

Re: visiting Unis and Open days, we might do some drive by visits over the half-term break, just to get a feel for the towns and campuses. Covid permitting of course.

Crikeyblimey · 13/10/2020 19:58

Fabtastic - I really wanted ds to apply to Cardiff (due to his welsh heritage and the standard of rugby mostly) but he hasn’t and I’m sad (realise this is his thing not mine but hey). 🤣

Greektome · 13/10/2020 20:08

So no-one's applying to St Andrew's or Glasgow, which were both highly spoken of in the last thread?

Tenpastseven · 13/10/2020 21:21

Thanks for those replies re Bristol.

DS has thought about St Andrews @Greektome but changed his mind when he looked closer at the course options and when he realised just how far away it was.

Thanks for the new thread. Still ploughing through the Open Days here. DS has heart set on Manchester but looking at Lancaster, Leicester and Cardiff over the next few weeks. Big variety in virtual open days. Some are rubbish! Bit of an eye opener in terms of their IT capabilities and organisation.

Vargas · 13/10/2020 21:43

My ds decided both too far away. We're in SE.
KaptainKaveman · 14/10/2020 07:49

Great thread! My dd has just started at Cambridge doing MML, one of them ab-initio (I won't say which one as it could be identifying but it's up your dd's street NiamCinnOir. Wink}

I think language degrees are brilliant and a gateway to so many opportunities. Plus they get to spend time in the country/countries to gain spoken proficiency. Good luck to you all and feel free to PM if you want.

BTW Lancaster University is excellent for MFL.

Tenpastseven · 14/10/2020 14:42

DS today received notification that his application has been put on hold by Bristol. He's applied to the Single Honours BA Modern Languages (the one where you have to have studied 2 languages at A level).

Trying not to be too disheartened or read too much into the fact that he hasn't been able to join the gang with a Bristol early offer.

OP posts:
Tenpastseven · 14/10/2020 15:11

Thanks for coming on @KaptainKaveman. Good to have an experienced and wise 'elder' on here for all our MML/MFL questions. Hope we don't tire you out ;)

OP posts:
fabtasticmrpox · 14/10/2020 15:40

tenpastseven oh that's a shame , our dcs aren't applying for the same thing maybe it's to do with how many places they have for your sons course. I hope your son isn't too disheartened.

Crikeyblimey · 14/10/2020 17:33

Tenpastseven don’t fret it isn’t a ‘don’t darken out doors’ response. Maybe they just need to wait a bit.

DS has just had an offer from Exeter! Really chuffed for him even though it is choice #4 for him currently and is pretty much as far away from home as he could get but hey, one in the bag.

If it’s any consolation Tenpast, no word from Bristol for him yet (choice #3).

Tenpastseven · 14/10/2020 17:34

Yes perhaps @fabtasticmrpox. Here begins the guessing and waiting game I guess. We are all here for the long haul. I’ll certainly need to build some stamina and resilience.

OP posts:
Tenpastseven · 14/10/2020 18:42

Sorry somehow missed your earlier post @Crikeyblimey. Congrats on the Exeter offer. Woo Hoo! What is #2 choice? Sorry if you’ve already said, it’s so hard to keep track.

Has your DS gone single or joint Hons at Bristol?

OP posts:
Crikeyblimey · 14/10/2020 19:14

Truth be told, not entirely sure but suspect single honours as he is only taking one language a level and his ‘other language’ will be ab inito.

Second choice is a risky Durham.

Tenpastseven · 14/10/2020 19:30

Truth be told I wouldn’t have known till I researched it yesterday but I now understand that at Bristol of you do 2 languages post A level
It’s a single Hons, but if one is ab-initial it is joint Hons. I’m handing myself the swot prize (otherwise known as the over invested parent prize 🙄)

OP posts:
Tenpastseven · 14/10/2020 19:37

Jeez I should preview before I post. If you do 2 it’s single Hons, if one ab-initio then Joint.

OP posts:
Crikeyblimey · 14/10/2020 19:38

Ha ha. I award you a swot prize too! Ow you have 2! 🤣 🥇

Crikeyblimey · 14/10/2020 19:39

Ffs. Now not Ow!

Plus, I’ve learned something so ‘ta’. 👍

Tenpastseven · 14/10/2020 19:46

Neither of us are going to win any prizes for posting accuracy though 😂

OP posts:
Crikeyblimey · 14/10/2020 19:52

Well, we might but not prizes we actually want 🤔

Vargas · 15/10/2020 16:03

DS had offer from Exeter yesterday. He is very pleased and the course looks like it would really suit him. We will definitely try to have a look over half-term, even if we literally just drive by...hope there's a nice pub somewhere near Grin.

Tenpastseven · 15/10/2020 16:29

Great news @Vargas!
