For those interested and moving over from the St Andrews thread (that became not about St Andrews)

Great to hear about all your dc's experiences!

I think dc's favourite is St A but they are only predicted an A for one of the languages they have applied for there as jount hons so who knows.
Very strong GCSEs and they are doing both the joint hons languages at A Level, where one of the two is pretty unusual, so I'm hoping that catches the admissions person's eye, at least as a sign that dc is committed to the languages applied for!

TCD sounds amazing! All very Sally Rooney!

ACJane · 22/10/2022 15:26

Just to add that official entry requirements for the St A course are AAB so of course dc exceeds that with the prediction but I'm worried that only A star predicted applicants might get an offer.
Dc school have been quite stingy on the predictions this year maybe.

They sound like they have an ideal profile for a JH programme ACJane, St A’s is an excellent place to study languages.

I wouldn’t worry too much, A* boundaries for most languages can be very high, are challenging A levels and often too grades taken by native speakers, hence lower entry requirements vs many other subjects to try and attract (and retain) all profiles with an aptitude and interest for languages.

Very best of luck to them on achieving offers across all their prospect unis.

Too = top 🙄

Juja · 22/10/2022 23:57

@ACJane I’d agree with @ealingwestmum that A star grade boundaries are high for languages at 88/89% and what with a further correction downwards in 2023 for A Level boundaries schools will be nervous predicting A stars.

Keep positive and hopeful 😊

DD applied to Warwick, Birmingham, Bristol, Bath and Liverpool. Offers ranged from AAB-BBB (contextual). Her predicted grades were 2A* and an A. She fell in love with Warwick, which became her firm choice. Happily, she achieved her predicted grades and started at Warwick in September, doing two languages. The workload is heavy but doable, and she's loving it.

My advice would be to look carefully at the course content for MFL - DD was more interested in historical/political aspects of culture than literature. She chose her courses accordingly.

I was impressed by Warwick's organisation on the open days we attended - there was plenty of opportunity to talk to lecturers and students as well as attend taster sessions.

Good luck to all this year's MFL DC!

@ACJane just send this, hope your offspring heard from St As. My son is there in second year studying MFL, he had an AAB offer and was predicted AAA which was what he got, so certainly not all A’s. He’s really enjoyed the Scottish flexibility have gone to study Italian and French, he swapped out the French for Russian and now likely to do his honours (from year 3) in Italian and Anthropology.

hollypocks · 28/11/2022 07:30

And just read that he’d applied for all the same unis as your child. He got offers from all except from Cambridge as rejected post interview. I think MFL were perhaps more willing to offer due to lack of demand, hope it’s the same this year.

ACJane · 28/11/2022 13:48

Great to hear everyone's experiences from previous years!

Dc has now got a Cambridge interview.

hollypocks · 28/11/2022 21:57

Should have read Astar, A, A -not sure what happened!

hollypocks · 28/11/2022 21:57

Best of luck! All great experience
