For those interested and moving over from the St Andrews thread (that became not about St Andrews)

Congratulations to your ds @Tenpastseven! Great to see the offers rolling in Smile

@Crikeyblimey congratulations to your ds on his offers too. I think your ds and my dd are applying for a very similar subject at very similar universities. We haven’t visited any, had been hoping to visit Leeds just before the first lockdown. It’s so hard to get a sense of what the different cities are like from virtual visits

Tenpastseven · 24/11/2020 20:16

Totally! The more I think about it, the more keen I am to take DS on a road trip or two to have a look and get a feel. Roll on vaccine and it might be possible before they have to decide on firm and insurance.

DS got his Newcastle offer this evening Smile

Crikeyblimey · 26/11/2020 19:02

Yey!! Great news @Tenpastseven 👍

NiamCinnOir · 26/11/2020 20:12

Wow, congratulations to your das, @Tenpastseven! It’s an exciting week in your house Smile

Tenpastseven · 26/11/2020 20:24

Where are you waiting to hear from still @NiamCinnOir and @Crikeyblimey?

OP posts:
NiamCinnOir · 26/11/2020 20:28

Oxford and St Andrews ...

Crikeyblimey · 26/11/2020 20:31

All done here @Tenpastseven. Well, 1 x interview and 4 x offers. It’s all a bit surreal to be honest.

How about you?

DS’s girlfriend got an interview for medicine at her first choice today. So v happy for her.

Tenpastseven · 26/11/2020 20:53

Thanks both. Wow well done to @Crikeyblimey junior. Very efficient!

Don’t St Andrews also offer notoriously late @NiamCinnOir?

DS is still waiting to hear from UCL. Has offers from Bristol (AAB) Newcastle (ABB) and Southampton (ABB) now.

OP posts:
NiamCinnOir · 26/11/2020 21:16

Yes, I think so @Tenpastseven, dd doesn’t expect to hear from them until Jan or Feb

Crikeyblimey · 26/11/2020 21:25

Efficient he may be but those grades won’t get themselves, so hope he’s working as hard as he appears to be.

I ‘think’ his offers are (cos I am rubbish at remembering stuff):
Durham (AAA)
Bristol (AAB)
Exeter (ABB) - reduced contextual for some reason but hey. Gift horses and all that.
Leeds (AAB I think).

TottiePlantagenet · 27/11/2020 14:48

DD applying for French and has had no offers so far, from:
Oxford
UCL
St Andrews
Durham
Manchester

Yes, this is early in the process but... it doesn't help that others (granted, applying for different subjects) have received offers... her twin has 3 out of 5 offers so far :/

I know a lot of her choices issue offers "late", so I've been trying to keep her calm, this is a drawn out process after all. Still kind of demoralising though.

Crikeyblimey · 27/11/2020 16:32

Oh it really is hard isn’t it. You are so right that it is early in the process and other than Durham we have no unis in common so no idea what the others are doing / how slow they’re being.

Hope she can hang in there. Offers really will start flooding in soon, I’m sure. 🤞

Greektome · 27/11/2020 19:57

If you're not applying to universities that are known to ask for grades above what you''ve been predicted, you're almost bound to get an offer, aren't you? With the exception of Oxbridge (and they will almost certainly offer an interview) and maybe St Andrew's? It's just a matter of time.

Greektome · 27/11/2020 19:57

Are universities saying what will happen to the year abroad, now that Erasmus is no longer open to UK students?

MarchingFrogs · 28/11/2020 08:02

According to DD (University of Birmingham), the place she has applied for in France for next year is still through Erasmus.

MarchingFrogs · 28/11/2020 08:04

Adding, which surprised me, asI was under the impression that it wouldn't be, but presumably (and hoping) I misunderstood...Smile.

Greektome · 28/11/2020 09:41

I think it's the last year though, so students starting in September won't be able to take advantage of Erasmus. So what will replace it for UK students? Are universities setting up direct exchange schemes? What will the financial effect on students be?
Not expecting anyone to do the work on finding out about this - just wondering whether you happen to have any info already?

Tenpastseven · 28/11/2020 15:36

Hi @TottiePlantagenet. I totally get it! She has applied for all the Unis that are late decision makers it seeks (though I don’t know about Manchester) and none of the same as DS. Which would be her 2nd choice after Oxford (presumably?)?

OP posts:
Tenpastseven · 28/11/2020 15:37

*it seems 🙄

OP posts:
TottiePlantagenet · 28/11/2020 16:11

Hi @Tenpastseven DD thinks she would like to be in London.

We've just had parents' evening, and will be preparing for the mocks (after Christmas) but definitely hoping that the exams will be cancelled and cancelled soon. All the disruption is playing havoc (to put it mildly) to the A Levels Sad

Tenpastseven · 28/11/2020 16:16

Oh really? Say a bit more? Has your DD been off school lots?

My DS is hoping to take the exams I think. Or rather last he said he was. Though I’m not sure he realises how disadvantaged he will have been having had no teaching at all during lockdown#1.

OP posts:
TottiePlantagenet · 28/11/2020 16:54

@Tenpastseven I think DCs just think it would be more fair across the country, if exams were cancelled due to the disrupted teaching. Even within the same school, they have had different experiences with online teaching during lockdown #1.

And then news reports about different provisions between state and private schools colour their views about the fairness of how online teaching has been delivered (they're at a state school).

Wales have cancelled their A Level exams, how would it be fair for English students to continue? DCs think moderated school assessments would be the best way to go.

I just foolishly wish that previous governments had changed the university admission system to be post-results, I think that would be much less stress-inducing.

Greektome · 28/11/2020 16:57

Really, really hope the exams aren't cancelled.

Tenpastseven · 28/11/2020 17:04

Yes you are probably right. My DS is at a state school too that as I said, did no teaching at all in lockdown #1. They HAVE thankfully been offering remote teaching this time round though.

So yes it’s all totally unfair in terms of provision. I have 0% trust that Boris et al will do anything other than bungle it all at the last minute though, or that they will find any effective way of levelling the field. goes to lay down in darkened room
