For those interested and moving over from the St Andrews thread (that became not about St Andrews)

Name change from fabtasticmrpox

Dd has her final offer Edinburgh ABB . She's really pleased. Decision time .....

Tenpastseven · 16/02/2021 11:03

Good to hear about more offers coming in 😊. Congratulations.

How are all of our language applicants doing? We actually got to visit Lancaster Uni in person today. So nice to actually picture things properly and will make choosing accommodation so much easier for DS.

hollypocks · 30/05/2021 22:42

DS firmed St A’s and insured Edinburgh, glad that’s all sorted. Just got to wait for Aug 10th now...

NiamCinnOir · 31/05/2021 11:09

Very happy that this thread has been revived. It was a lifeline around application time. Dd has firmed Oxford and ensured Bristol now. She’s worried about missing out on accommodation for Bristol if she misses the grades for Oxford, which is entirely possible given the chaos of the TAGs this year. She still doesn’t really know which pieces of work count towards her final grade.

RainBow725 · 31/05/2021 11:50

It's been chaotic hasn't it? At this point I have no clue whether to expect disastrous or amazing grades or anything in between. Just keeping everything crossed.

FlyingSquid · 31/05/2021 13:21

DD still very nervous about Oxford, and more so now that there is no longer going to be a 2-week residential for those doing a language from scratch (can’t recall whether that includes your DD as well, Niam?).

JBX2013 · 31/05/2021 14:34

Hi all! A lurker and observer her - so forgive me! We went through this waiting and anguish in 2017; it's clearly challenging in a different way with TAGs now.

May I ask you all: what grades are required and for which specific courses?

NiamCinnOir · 31/05/2021 15:29

@FlyingSquid hmmm, dd is doing one post A level language and one ab initio but hasn’t mentioned any thing about a residential course. Maybe I need to ask her to check her emails! She hasn’t had any communication with her college at all. Do you mind me asking which MFL your dd is doing?

NiamCinnOir · 31/05/2021 15:32

Welcome @JBX2013. Has your dc just finished their MFL course? Dd has an offer of AAA for Oxford and AAB for Bristol. So me one else at her school has a Cambridge offer of A*AA for history + MFL but was rejected by Durham and Edinburgh.

FlyingSquid · 31/05/2021 15:43

That’s the thing, there was meant to be an an initial residential (it came up at interview), but instead there’s just going to be an online course in late September. Maybe it varies by language? Given the small numbers involved I’ll pm you which one!

hollypocks · 08/06/2021 14:34

Hi @JBX2013, my son has AAB for St As and ABB for Edinburgh, he declined Durham on AAA and Bath ABB

JBX2013 · 08/06/2021 18:10

Thanks, @hollypocks !

JBX2013 · 08/06/2021 18:16

Hi @NiamCinnOir! My daughter is finishing her MPhil Thesis at Cambridge in an Arts-Humanities subject. (She has forbidden me from mentioning her subject or either her undergrad or postgrad colleges!)

NiamCinnOir · 09/08/2021 13:31

Just popping back to this thread which was a lifeline during applications to wish all the language applicants the very best of luck for results day tomorrow. I can’t believe it’s come round finally - the wait feels interminable! DD has an offer for Oxford for AAA and has insured Bristol for ABB. She’d be very happy with either but would probably try to defer Bristol for a year as she’s very worried about not being able to get decent accommodation. I think your ds is also planning to defer Bristol @Tenpastseven?

Tenpastseven · 09/08/2021 15:10

@NiamCinnOir yes, that’s right. He’s deferred. He is doing the 3 language option so standard offer is AAB.

OP posts:
FlyingSquid · 09/08/2021 16:19

Good luck all!

NiamCinnOir · 09/08/2021 17:45

3 languages sounds good @Tenpastseven. French, Spanish and German? How is your dd doing @FlyingSquid? We are about to have a long walk with ice cream half way and an early night. All diversionary tactics Grin

FlyingSquid · 09/08/2021 18:28

Well, she’s ordered a lot of books from the reading list (and is apparently absorbing them by osmosis through the covers).

She’s a post-results applicant, so she knows she has the grades, thankfully.

Tenpastseven · 09/08/2021 20:28

@NiamCinnOir French and Spanish post A level and 1 x ab-initio. Likely Russian. Possibly Arabic.

This feels like a loooong journey we’ve been on together.

OP posts:
NiamCinnOir · 09/08/2021 22:00

Ah, that's a very exciting third option, @Tenpastseven. DD is also doing Russian (jointly with German) - definitely feels like a very long journey indeed with plenty of ups and downs along the way!

@FlyingSquid No book list here yet - I dread to think how long it will be when it comes, if DD gets her grades ...

ealingwestmum · 10/08/2021 11:27

Congratulations to all your DC, amazing outcomes! May see some names next year for 2022 entry, especially those DC that are deferring.

Enjoy celebrating!

NiamCinnOir · 10/08/2021 11:56

Congratulations to all the dc on this thread, so exciting! DD confirmed her place at Oxford, very surreal. Is your dc in Y12, applying for MFL for 2022 entry @ealingwestmum? If so, there will be plenty of advice on this thread.

RainBow725 · 10/08/2021 12:03

I hope all our linguists have done well today. Mine has done even better than expected and is off to his first choice - Lancaster. Unfortunately he tested positive for COVID yesterday 🙄🤦🏻‍♀️ so rather sedate celebrations but his results have made up for it!

FlyingSquid · 10/08/2021 12:14

Well done, MiniNiam and MiniRainbow!

We'll wave at you in Oxford, Niam. As we don't know you in real life (despite kind of feeling we should by now), I guess we'll need to wave at everyone, just in case.

We'll be the mad family waving at random people.
