Following on from the previous thread as our young adults start their second year at universities up and down the land (and some overseas too!).

Sorry to hear about positive DC. Hope it’s mild and they recover quickly. Just had a text from DD to say she’s gone to Newcastle from Durham today, shopping. Hope she’s careful with hygiene.

bigTillyMint · 03/10/2020 09:43

Hope it’s just shopping and not partying @Benjispruce2 WinkGrin

There’s not been any news about covid at DU AFAIK - are they just keeping it quiet or are the colleges v tightly locked down?

Benjispruce2 · 03/10/2020 11:09

I think they were shopping. I know she went to a sit down club experience in Durham last week with her housemates. They had a 2 hr slot and they were so grateful. So glad they really went for it last year! So glad they’re getting on really well as they’re together all the time now. Term starts on Monday doesn’t it @bigTillyMint?

bigTillyMint · 03/10/2020 11:15

A sit down club experience? @Benjispruce2 Grin what must that have been like? Sounds more suited to us than them Grin

Yes I am so glad that DS got the full Freshers experience last year. And so is he! I think term does start Monday but I think his is all online?

Benjispruce2 · 03/10/2020 11:18

Yes! She sent a short video and they seemed to be enjoying it. Haven’t spoken to DD for a week so I’m not sure if she’s fully online or a mix. I think she was expecting a mix of online lectures and face to face tutorials.

bigTillyMint · 03/10/2020 13:16

Actually just had a call with DS and he now thinks maybe some F2f. But he won’t be able to go in as one of the girls in his house has just tested positive and another girl has gone for a test. DS and friend feel fine atm, but will have to SI anyway. We are hoping he gets it now then hopefully they’ll all be able to get on with stuff.

bigTillyMint · 03/10/2020 13:16

But he might actually be immune as he might have had it at the start of lockdown Confused

icanbewhatiwant · 03/10/2020 15:46

I haven't heard anything much about covid cases at UEA. I know ds has done a test this week. They can all be tested but it is voluntary. He has lab time on his time table but not until the week after next. So third week in.

Benjispruce2 · 03/10/2020 16:54

@bigTillyMint DD has text to say at least 10 people she knows have tested positive this week and lots of households are SI. Her house is ok at the moment.

Benjispruce2 · 03/10/2020 17:10

Oh and barely any symptoms from the 10+ positive cases she knows of. Hopefully it stays that way .

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 03/10/2020 17:57

DN, fresher at UEA is in a flat with positive testing flatmates. She's okay at the moment but hasn't yet had a test (they are all SI).

I should stay off Facebook. I have read so many depressing accounts of students having such an awful time when they should be enjoying themselves.

Nottingham aren't coming out of this well, and a lot of students are going home.

Jano69 · 03/10/2020 20:51

Sorry to hear of all the positive test results and those having to SI.

Spoke to DS today - he's enjoyed being a frepper. He doesn't know of any positive cases yet but expects to hear of some very soon.

Judging by @Benjispruce2 and @bigTillyMint'S postings, sooner rather than later.

Our DC are making history while we watch on. Perhaps these MN chats will be the history records of the future.

Witchend · 03/10/2020 21:01

DD says it's very wet in Durham.
She's got a nice place and one of her housemates is bringing a car which should make shopping easier.

LaBelleSauvage123 · 03/10/2020 21:07

@Ginfordinner I find the FB group really depressing too. I find myself posting relentlessly cheerfully in an effort to reassure all the anxious parents! I realise that DS is lucky to be in a flat of sociable, like-minded individuals but I had a zoom chat with him this afternoon and despite the virus and the SI, he’s in such good spirits. His flat are doing movie nights and Come Dine with Me - they really seem to be making the best of it.

Ginfordinner · 03/10/2020 21:41

DD and her friends are making the best of it as well. I feel for students in catered accommodation who have to wait for food to be delivered. TBH I don't understand why any student would choose catered, extra needs aside.

Piggywaspushed · 03/10/2020 21:50

DS has had his phone mended!

He can only speak on speaker phone but it's something...

LaBelleSauvage123 · 03/10/2020 21:51

No nor me!

LaBelleSauvage123 · 03/10/2020 21:51

Sorry that was a reply to Gin

Benjispruce2 · 03/10/2020 21:52

@Piggywaspushed I think he needs to attach his phone to those mitten strings we used to have in our coats as kids.Grin
Can’t believe the increase in cases today-12k!!

Jano69 · 03/10/2020 21:53

Looks like all our DC are making the best of a bad situation, very proud of them all.

Piggywaspushed · 03/10/2020 21:53

I shall buy him some Benji!!

Jano69 · 03/10/2020 21:56

Mittens strings! Happy childhood memories of the 70s! 😆

Jano69 · 03/10/2020 21:58

Eeek 12,000!!!!

Benjispruce2 · 03/10/2020 22:30

Apparently it includes some cases previously not counted, due to technical issues.
