Following on from the previous thread as our young adults start their second year at universities up and down the land (and some overseas too!).

Lol Piggy!!

mumsneedwine · 31/10/2020 15:31

@Piggywaspushed 😂 you have described my bottom set year 11s so well. Always so polite and calm, never any drama, and always keen to learn.

icanbewhatiwant · 31/10/2020 15:59

I know mine would rather be in his house with mates than with us. So no point asking him. They think schools and universities will remain open. So as ds is having one f2f a week and one lab session. I hope they will continue.

We live in tier 1 area. As does ds. So we haven't been in tighter restrictions yet. Let's see what Boris says.

Benjispruce2 · 31/10/2020 16:42

Tuned in here with wine 🍷 in preparation. and as enjoyable muscle relaxant .Thanks for your well wishes. Never had back pain like it and it’s making me feel old.
Yes @Piggywaspushed I know what you mean. I really think DD2 needs her face to face A level tuition. Despite her objections, she’s learnt s much since September and her teachers have been fantastic and worked so hard to bring them up to speed after 6 months of zero education. The staff are being pretty well protected and there have only been two cases, of which one was staff and one a student. Both recovered well thankfully.

bigTillyMint · 31/10/2020 17:08

Oh I missed your back pain news @Benjispruce2 Flowers
Good to hear your DD2 and teachers doing well on learning and health front. DS is really enjoying doing Zoom tutoring for Alevel History!

Benjispruce2 · 31/10/2020 17:10

Thanks @bigTillymint.DD2 studying History too.

Jano69 · 31/10/2020 17:18

DD also studying History!

Enjoy your 🍷 Benji.

I delayed my visit to the gym this afternoon to tune into the 5pm briefing which has now been delayed.

I'm wondering whether they're making a last minute change to schools and unis staying open following an announcement from the teaching union.

bigTillyMint · 31/10/2020 17:26

Both mine did History - it seems there’s a lot of it about! DS seems to enjoy the detective work side of the degree I think!

Yes NEU calling for schools to be shut except for vulnerable pupils. I think it probably needs to happen if they really want to slow the spread Confused

Ginfordinner · 31/10/2020 17:41

Isn't history the most popular subject these days, along with law and psychology?

Piggywaspushed · 31/10/2020 17:45

Most popular A Level is maths... believe it or not!

History is actually on the decline, along with other arts and hums subjects.

Benjispruce2 · 31/10/2020 17:51

DD1 did History A level too. I agree with NEU leader that the tots system sounds a good compromise. What do you secondary teachers think?

Oldowl · 31/10/2020 17:58

November GCSE exams start next week and the re-scheduled 11 plus exam in my area. Parental/student stress must be through the roof at the thought of another postponement.

Ginfordinner · 31/10/2020 18:00

Sorry, I meant as a degree subject.

Piggywaspushed · 31/10/2020 18:03

Oh, right. In that case, that is probably true. there are so many different STEM type subjects that it rather thins them all out.

Piggywaspushed · 31/10/2020 18:05

Well, I personally am pro some kind of rota system at secondary but it has literally not been planned for so it would be a bit of a shambles, I imagine. Like most things in education. Deep sigh.

Benjispruce2 · 31/10/2020 18:11

Rota not tots! Glad you translated that @Piggywaspushed.Must be the 🍷. I’m blaming Boris, the delay is making me thirsty.
@Oldowl awful for those retakes. Though perhaps they could still go ahead.

Piggywaspushed · 31/10/2020 18:12

I read it as rota! Teachers can read any old rubbish and make some kind of sense ! Grin

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 31/10/2020 18:19

@Piggywaspushed a rota is one of the 'tier' options suggested by DD's school.

And another one here whose DS did history A Level.

Hope your back pain eases off soon @Benjispruce2.

I know OP : those are the tiers the DfE published to get unions and school onside in August, and then backtracked on!

Oldowl · 31/10/2020 18:48

Oxbridge entrance exams too next week.

Benjispruce2 · 31/10/2020 19:51

Ha ha @Piggywaspushed indeed they can. Oh well It’s a gloomy few weeks ahead. Dig deep everyone.

simbobs · 31/10/2020 20:17

Oh well, with no DC at home I won't be needing to do an emergency loo roll shop. Time to exercise the corkscrew, methinks. Cheers everyone!

Ginfordinner · 31/10/2020 20:28

Get screwtop @simbobs. They're easier Grin

Itscoldouthere · 31/10/2020 21:53

Watching with interest from Canada, I wasn't expecting another lockdown.
I'm hoping not all students decide to go home as my DC have no home to go to at the moment, so they have to stay in their student houses.
We are in partial lockdown here in Montreal and it's just been extended to 23rd November.
Wine is helping, plus dog walks and the odd take away.

simbobs · 31/10/2020 22:19

@Itscoldouthere, you've just described my life! DS confirmed that he is staying put, so at least I don't have to worry about him.
