Applying for uni in 2021...

Parsley65 · 20/02/2020 15:13

Thought I'd start the ball rolling on this one...

Dd wants to study psychology and we've been checking out dates of open days.

Her school still does AS levels. She's doing psychology, physics & business.

Please come and join us on the long and bumpy ride past revision and exams and on towards the much anticipated start of uni life in Autumn 2021.

No She can still withdraw.

ComplexNeeds · 01/02/2021 23:22

Thank you SeasonFinale. Do you know how late she can leave it to decide please? Whilst she wouldn’t want to mess the university around she does need to be fully recovered. Thank you.

BigWoollyJumpers · 02/02/2021 16:08

So, I know DofE still haven't decided on what's actually going to happen this year, but does anyone know if moderation of coursework continues? I assume it does. DD has English already in, and History due in soon.

SeasonFinale · 02/02/2021 16:13

Our school is definitely continuing with and marking all coursework. It is assumed this will be used to formulate part of the marks and even not as a separate mark for the actual exam board is a very good way to inform a teacher of the grade level the student is working at.

My understanding @ComplexNeeds is that some students even start and drop out within a couple of weeks without incurring any penalty so if the situation were to continue right up to the wire I would suggest having a word with the admissions team at the particular university.

chopc · 02/02/2021 17:04

@BigWoollyJumpers my DS handed his History coursework in this week. I assume it will be marked as normal as people don't know how grades will be issued and evidence needs to be collected

Complexneeds · 02/02/2021 18:23

Thank you seasonfinale we really don’t know what to do. I’m thinking maybe she withdraws now and looks to apply once she’s better. It’s difficult for them to acknowledge that they’re not well and even harder for them to acknowledge that they may not be well for some time. Feels a little defeatist rather than hopeful.

NotDonna · 04/02/2021 15:58

I think requesting to defer now is a great idea. I’m assuming you can request to defer from both firm and insurance (albeit not to actually firm or insure any until deferment confirmed). See what happens on results day and where DC are at health wise. Some universities may be ok to take them in September regardless of deferment, others may want them to stick with the defer arrangement and commence next year but at least that way options are all still open.

mumsneedwine · 04/02/2021 17:12

@Complexneeds she can start Uni and then decide to leave up until late October (there is a cut off date where student finance kicks in). Friend of DD did it this year and reapplied to another completely different course which she is says fits her better.

nancypineapple · 04/02/2021 17:58

Well UCL have e mailed DS to say due to the unusually large numbers applying this year offers/rejections will take longer than normal. He is "chill" about it even if I'm not.

SeasonFinale · 04/02/2021 18:33

What subject was that for Nancy - we have had some UCL medicine offers today? And Durham Natsci coming through since 5.30 today

nancypineapple · 04/02/2021 19:13

@SeasonFinale it's for economics.

SeasonFinale · 05/02/2021 10:12
@SeasonFinale it's for economics.
Yes all the better Economics courses are massively oversubscribed this year.

calculatorqueen · 05/02/2021 11:56

@SeasonFinale Economics always seems very popular. Luckily DS was an early applicant due to Oxbridge (rejected) and had all his offers by the end of November, Bath, Exeter, York and Birmingham. Probably not classed as the very top end but London didn't appeal or Warwick.

@NotDonna Has your DD heard from Bath?

NotDonna · 05/02/2021 12:04

@calculatorqueen I’m not sure. I’ll have to ask her. She’s now not going to uni though. She’s got an apprenticeship.

calculatorqueen · 05/02/2021 12:28

@NotDonna Congratulations to your DD. Sounds a good option given the current situation.

NotDonna · 05/02/2021 12:32

She’s ecstatic as that was always her preferred choice.

NotDonna · 05/02/2021 18:53

@calculatorqueen yes, she apparently heard from Bath last week - standard offer A*AA. Thank you for asking!

minesawine · 08/02/2021 18:00

Hi. Does anyone know when Student Finance opens for September intake. Thanks

lazyboysmum · 08/02/2021 18:11

DS has all his offers now, but his school are saying he should wait to accept even though he knows where he wants to go. He is very vague about the reason behind this. Does anyone have any insight? I would have thought there's no harm in accepting his offers now and then he can get on and apply for accommodation so in fact it would be a good thing to get on with it!

LeiatheSchnauzer · 08/02/2021 18:17

@lazyboysmum, I don't have any insight but I think dd1 is holding off till we better understand what the exam situation will be and that she feels confident that she will get the grades for her 1st choice.
May be completely unrelated to your ds's school. Can you find out if his preferred choices actually start allocating accommodation yet or if it's a case of just beginning the process?

lazyboysmum · 08/02/2021 18:35

@LeiatheSchnauzer thanks- yes his second choice say that although they don't allocate now, when they do so after results, they do it in the order of applications received. 4 of his offers are all the same grades so his firm and insurance choices have been straightforward.

BigWoollyJumpers · 09/02/2021 11:22

Dd has firmed hers up. Her top choice is actually a reduced offer for putting first, so somewhat bizarrely her insurance is higher! They both started out at AAA, though. Her predicted is 3 Astar, so unless something goes horribly wrong, there was no reason to delay regardless of exams/no exams/assessments etc.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 09/02/2021 12:14

DS1 is still waiting on 4 Unis. It seems like several of his choices waited until the extended UCAS deadline passed.

Bee0808 · 09/02/2021 15:57

Student finance applications start mid February I believe...

Ds1 is attending a few virtual open days this week.

SeasonFinale · 09/02/2021 18:25

We have had some Durham E&M offers through this evening.
