previous thread www.mumsnet.com/Talk/higher_education/3701968-The-ABC-of-university-life-2019-20-cohort-settling-in-we-hope

Hope you don't mind - people have pent up comments about cheese graters and traffic cones to get out of their system!

Hope Dd gets better soon Ginfordinner it’s awful when they her illness after illness.

ZandathePanda · 29/10/2019 10:03

‘Get’ not ‘her’

Ginfordinner · 29/10/2019 12:58

I have been messaging DD this morning. She didn't register with the Boots doctor BTW, but is with another one. She feels rubbish today. It looks like the Halloween bar crawl she was planning on doing tomorrow won't happen.

Benjispruce · 29/10/2019 14:14

Sorry to hear about the poorly ones. Hope they get well soon. DD finally went to the pharmacy to get some eye ointment for her pink eyes( I told her to show a pharmacist over a week ago) and it is nearly better. She’s sent us the contract to check over for the house next year. All seems in order but just strange to be paying deposit for next year when Durham still haven’t invoiced for the first term of this year!

juicy0 · 29/10/2019 16:19

Just seen a National Express 40% off offer on Groupon. Valid for travel from 1st Nov to 31 March.
Thought it may be useful for any DC's heading home for Christmas.

OatyGoaty · 29/10/2019 17:23

Gosh, sorry to hear about all the ill students. I sent DD up with vitamins but she hasn't taken them.

It was so nice to see her.

OatyGoaty · 29/10/2019 18:04

Are there any non-Durham/Oxbridge people left on this thread?

Feeling a bit lonely (not anti-Oxbridge - my DD applied).

bigTillyMint · 29/10/2019 18:31

@OatyGoaty, don't feel lonely! Where is your DD? My DS is at Durham, but DD is at Bristol. And there are definitely a few in Nottingham and Newcastle here!

Ginfordinner · 29/10/2019 18:37

Parent of a Newcastle student here.

MrKlaw · 29/10/2019 18:44

Bath here. I think Durham popped up for a bit because they started later so the nervous parents were active for longer. The rest of us had settled down into unease

Benjispruce · 29/10/2019 18:44

Non Durham/Oxbridge? What difference does it make?

Benjispruce · 29/10/2019 18:45

We’re all in this together!Grin

WaxOnFeckOff · 29/10/2019 18:48

I'm still about and DS is Aberdeen :) - Not sure we could get any further away if we tried. Well, technically Uni of Highlands and Islands have some campuses further north but I'm not counting them.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 29/10/2019 19:26

I'm still here (DS at UEA) but sorry I've been a bit unchatty recently. DS seems to be quietly getting on with things. Not very communicative. Taking it to be a case of no news is good news.

Sorry to hear that so many of the young people have been really quite poorly. Hoping they develop a resilience that will see them through the rest of their time at university. Think DS has been okay so far, even on a diet of pot noodles, pesto pasta and not much else!

Piggywaspushed · 29/10/2019 19:35

I still read this thread but no news. I just still get texts form DS asking me how to wash things etc. Never anything interesting!

He bemoans his own forgetfulness a fair amount and then forgets what I tell him.

He texts DH completely different things, interestingly. Football chat but also told DH he wasn't feeling very well, but not me. (I just get asked about wash temperatures and why hasn't he got enough clothes, and should he get a job...)

Benjispruce · 29/10/2019 19:41

I get photos mainly. Group photos of nights out, sports team photos, new house photos....

SchrodingersKitty · 29/10/2019 19:47

An Oxford mum here - I've been posting a lot because their term started so late - only the start of the third week now. So my DS is still going through all the things other DC got under their belts weeks ago. I'm pretty sure he still hasn't done any washing, for instance!

I'm so impressed by the DC who are confidently managing independently now.

juicy0 · 29/10/2019 20:00

DD is at UEA but no news to report that would be interesting really. Mostly how do I cook this/wash this/organise this etc etc
She is still suffering with daily headaches and has a neurology app next week and an app to see a cranial osteopath

BorisInAnExecutionersMask · 29/10/2019 20:21

We still have the whatsapp group here, so DD can inform both parents of random stuff at the same time. It works rather well, although she clearly isn't a 'talk on the phone' person. We quite often get group selfies sent to us which is rather nice.

I'm sorry to hear your DD is still suffering with headaches juicy0 hopefully the upcoming appts will help Sad

Clankboing · 29/10/2019 20:29

Had a phone conversation with ds tonight. We are visiting on Sunday. He is surprised at how little he is spending - I however wish that he would relax and spend a little more! I don't want him to be so careful with money that he loses weight or doesn't have fun.

GoldenRuby · 29/10/2019 20:33

Another UEA parent here - there is a separate thread for UEA so have mainly been over there getting tips on nice places to eat in Norwich with a dog in tow!

bigTillyMint · 29/10/2019 20:44

@Piggywaspushed, my DS is very similar Hmm I am so jealous of @Benjispruce and all the photosEnvy

WaxOnFeckOff · 29/10/2019 20:45

DS2 actually now has only 4 more teaching weeks and apart from 2 exams, that's him done until after new year.

Itscoldouthere · 29/10/2019 21:23

I got bumped off notifications for this thread, obviously haven’t posted enough.
I’ve got 2 DS who started this year one at UEA (so l’m on that thread 👋) and one at Bournemouth Arts Uni.
The Bournemouth DS has been to look at a flat for next year tonight, he says it’s great so they are going to put a deposit down, can’t believe he’s so on the ball already!
DS2 hasn’t even managed to do any washing yet, so has run out of clothes and is still living on pot noodles and toasted sandwiches 😊
Sorry to hear about other DCs having illness, it must be hard for them, hope they get better soon.

Atreus · 29/10/2019 22:19

Bath mum here. Been travelling a lot with work so lurking but not posting. DD1 came home for a weekend visit this weekend. It was so lovely to see her. Despite a hacking 4 week cough, she seems to be flourishing. Very happy with her flat mates, has joined the rowing club and so is fitter than ever before and seems to be out more often than she is in. She was a little introverted at school and could take a little time to 'warm up' but seems to have thrown herself into it all. It's lovely to see.
