All good reports from DS1 so far, he met up with a friends son who is a 2nd year student last night and they went out for a few drinks, he’s having to go in full time and work at uni already, so it’s all quite full on, but it sounds likes he’s loving it.
I’m taking DS2 to get a few new clothes (he hates shopping) and to get a haircut today, then he just has to make sure he’s done all his washing and packed everything.

RaptorInaPorkPieHat · 18/09/2019 13:15

Piggy excellent news on the remark Smile I hope your DS is settling in more.

DD has a couple of people she knows going to Nottingham, but they're all at different campuses. They've been comparing timetables to see when they can meet up [smile) we've (I've) bought the academic year bus pass so she gets free travel into Nottingham (includes the night bus) so hopefully that will encourage her to get out and about.

Decorhate · 18/09/2019 14:13

Nottingham is very popular around here too. Every second person seems to be going there!

Ds has found out that one other person from his school is going to Bath so at least there is someone he can meet up with at the start

Alicatz66 · 18/09/2019 14:34

Looks like loads going to Nottingham!!
DS 19th Birthday today ... he's very laid back about it all so far .. gone to gym .. I'm off work rest of week but have estate agent coming to do pictures of house tomorrow so whizzing about cleaning as well as doing all the washing ... quite looking forward to less laundry when hes gone ! ... off to Nottingham for a 10.00 am drop off on Saturday Confused

MrsPellegrinoPetrichor · 18/09/2019 14:45

Two of dds flatmates haven't joined the Facebook group. She is now fascinated by them

One of ds's house mates was the same, they ended up calling him Paul Lamb the Invisible Man (from Fresh Meat ) 😂 Apparently he's very nice.

So after having a couple of texts yesterday from ds which really was like pulling teeth he was very chatty today and texted loads. Said his housemates are great and they're good friends already and out most nights with them, he's made friends with another boy on his course and they have joined a kick boxing club and going for a trial this afternoon. He said the weather is wonderful, always something to do and the hills are a struggle but he's managing 😂

I am so relieved I had a little cry and had to sit in the garden with a cup of tea to recover 🙄😂

stucknoue · 18/09/2019 14:46

@NewModelArmyMayhem18
14 is a tiny percentage of dd1's sixth form - 1750 in the year! Nottingham is popular because it's only an hour away and it's a trend here to apply to places where you have two options in the city, your top choice and the former poly as back up.

CointreauVersial · 18/09/2019 14:53

Checking into new thread....

MrsPellegrinoPetrichor · 18/09/2019 14:57

Ds didn't know anyone going to his uni but a few going to Nottingham, seems a popular choice.

Ingles2 · 18/09/2019 15:01

hey everyone :) nice to hear all your news.. and I'm glad the vast majority are settling ok..
We're still a week away for L'boro and more for Durham.. Ds1 is planning a very heavy freshers week involving going to all the parties and club nights... as he's had a gap year and been out... oo maybe twice, I'll be amazed if he does..
Ds2 is much more sedate, he's got a wristband, but likes his own company, and takes his work very seriously, so I don't think he'll get hat involved. We've just been to Cern in Switzerland to visit the LHC and it reminded me what a lovely lad he is, we had a great time... I'd started to think he could only communicate by grunt Grin

Ginfordinner · 18/09/2019 15:48

It seems that a handful of universities are very "in" on mumsnet. As far as I know only DD and the DD of one other poster are going to Newcastle.

HoldMyLobster · 18/09/2019 15:50

Hello - I think I had a different username on the last thread. I'm the one whose DD is at uni in Chicago. She went there by plane with just a suitcase and a duffle bag. Very good for making them think about what they really want to take!

She went to her first off-campus party the other night. Probably hard to believe from the UK, but she's never been to a party where alcohol is served, so it was new to her. It's still illegal for her to be served alcohol but I think they turn more of a blind eye to it at university.

I missed the official move-in and the welcome they did for families, so she feels a very long way away, but DH was there and says she's having a great time.

RedHelenB · 18/09/2019 16:20

@Ginfordinner freshers is brill at Newcastle theres so much to do.

mushroom3 · 18/09/2019 16:45

My DD is applying for Psychology for 2020, with a couple more Uni's to visit, Newcastle is one of her top two favourites so far (the other one is Liverpool).

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 18/09/2019 17:09

Think Nottingham and NTU have always been very popular. Otherwise it can vary greatly from year to year. DS considered Newcastle but it didn't make his final five - he was a bit concerned by its reputation for being party central (and he currently is as about as far removed from being a party animal as it's possible to be - that might change though).

pumpkinpie01 · 18/09/2019 17:37

My DD went on Saturday, yet freshers doesn't properly start til this weekend but check in for her halls was Saturday 🤔so her and her flatmates are just exploring the city and having nights out. Spoke to her earlier she sounded a little down, I suppose at the moment she literally has nothing to do. But she is getting on with her 5 flatmates so that's a good start .

Decorhate · 18/09/2019 18:43

Just found a leaflet in ds room from the SU. Some of what I consider to be Freshers events are not until the following week. Being cynical, it just seems like an excuse to get an extra weeks rent out of them.

Piggywaspushed · 18/09/2019 18:53

Interestingly, newmodel the uni that ahs always had a (deserved!) party central reputation is NTU!

DS has just texted to say he has found someone to watch football with at the pub. Hoorah.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 18/09/2019 19:06

Yay @Piggywaspushed - brilliant news!

Yes I can imagine that - have a relative who failed their first year at NTU through hard partying!

Piggywaspushed · 18/09/2019 19:38

On that note, I have to share his other texts today :

I can't seem to find the detergent thingy/ whatever you use to clean the stuff (on his shelves). Turns out he spilt coffee on his pillow
and do I have to wash my towel too?
what is the 2nd 4th and 6th digit for the NatWest thingy?
what is a frying pan? Confused

Grin
bigTillyMint · 18/09/2019 19:48

What is a frying pan? Grin

Piggywaspushed · 18/09/2019 19:49

Yes, he is, tilly!

bigTillyMint · 18/09/2019 19:50

DH and DS aren't, but have gone to the pub to watch anyway Grin

Shimy · 18/09/2019 19:55

Phew! Lost you all somehow. Just found the new thread Smile.

Glad to hear everyone’s settling in we’ll at their respective Unis and being kept busy.

@Piggy hurrah indeed for Piglet finding a pal to watch tv with (even more than the grade increase). Praying fervently Shimyjr does likewise.

Drop off is this Saturday.

Ps what is a frying pan?
I’m sure there’s a witty answer to this on one of those usual xmas crackers😂
