Nice to have a chat with DS last night. Sounds like he's settling in well, and is getting on well with his flatmates - there's even talk of sharing a house next year! Let's hope they continue to get on ...
He's bumped into a few people from school (around 30 went from his school to his university), but isn't hanging out with them all the time and is making new friends - which is good.
All sounding positive!

Trewser · 26/09/2019 08:30

I suppose i should be happy that dd is loving it. I'm being a bit of a party pooper.

Alicatz66 · 26/09/2019 08:48

@SoonerthanIthought @NewModelArmyMayhem18
I feel a bit better today ... DS texted to tell me he feels less weird and is getting to know flatmates .. he will never be a party animal and was doing his laundry and had made a sausage sandwich !!
Agree that will be great advice for 2020 freshers .... and at least ours will be a year in!!
I live in Birmingham and find I'm noticing the freshers here bumbling around Tesco's !!!

candycane222 · 26/09/2019 09:55

I think they'll just have to learn to pace themselves - even in the face of peer pressure and FOMO, @minesawine. We'll have to grit our teeth while they make the predictable mistakes (that I certainly went on making well into my 20s!! GrinBlush)

JennyWreny · 26/09/2019 10:16

Still packing and vacuum bagging here!!! DD has calculated that she needs 80 hangers for her clothes Hmm Hopefully she's miscalculated and doesn't really have that many clothes . . . . .

I see there's rain forecast for York on Saturday - annoying.

@NewModelArmyMayhem18 Did you realise this thread is running out? Sorry if you have already noticed and I've missed the new link.

icanbewhatiwant · 26/09/2019 10:30

@candycane222 do you know the wardrobe size? We took about 20 hangers and they filled the wardrobe right up. Not a lot of room in the drawers either. This was for my ds. I can't imagine how girls manage as I'm sure they will have more clothes.

Alicatz66 · 26/09/2019 10:34

@icanbewhatiwant ... wardrobe at Nottingham was ok for DS ... drawers tiny ... and we only took about 10 hangers !!! Don't know what the girls will do !!

MrKlaw · 26/09/2019 10:57

lots of wardrobe space for DS - he puts most things on shelves which were running short. So we're suggesting getting things like hanging storage for shoes/underwear to use the wardrobe space more effectively

ifonly4 · 26/09/2019 11:08

candycane222 and minesawine hope your DCs feel better soon. DD went down with a bad cold two days in and sickness that night. A couple of days later she lost her voice, she was determined to continue socialising but hard when you can't speak or have to leave becauses you're constantly coughing. Fast forward a couple of weeks, it hasn't stopped her from getting to know others, we're heard of an early morning hill walk, trip to pub and ABBA night at local theatre this last week.

JennyWreny · 26/09/2019 11:11

The wardrobe looks like a regular double size one. She doesn't have that many hangers so will have to double up and fold some stuff. We had an extended post-exams holiday for 4 weeks this year and had to do two lots of washing during the trip so she doesn't have that many clothes. I think she must have miscounted somehow.

Having to stay home today to wait for Amazon to deliver the sandwich toaster/waffle maker - hope it comes today otherwise it will get left behind . . . . . .

icanbewhatiwant · 26/09/2019 11:22

Ds only had a small single wardrobe with no shelves underneath. I did put a canvas storage box in the bottom with spare towels and sheets in. We used that as a shelf for jeans. Socks and underwear just fitted in the 3 drawers. Jumpers hung up on the hangers. He had nowhere for t shirts and shoes under the bed. So the storage was limited. There probably is something online suitable to stand in the space at the bottom...but he will manage.

simbobs · 26/09/2019 11:26

Trewser I wouldn't worry about your DD. Things will calm down a bit anyway when there are fewer organised events and more work to be done.

While DS was here yesterday I got him to show me hs timetable and was a bit shocked at how sparsely populated it is. He is not a great self-starter so unless there is pressure to really produce something he will let it wait. He has no 9.00am lectures (good), and nothing at all on a Tuesday. I'm now hoping he will find a job so that he isn't bored.

He is very disappointed in his antisocial flat. He says he doesn't mind people sharing his sharp knives and tea towels (which only he brought) but says it would be nice to know who he was sharing them with. There seem to be 2 empty rooms in his flat of 6 (so far, so possibly 2nd years) one lad we met once when moving in, whom he has not seen again, ditto the last arrival and one that seems to spend time alone gaming. I've suggested he move but it is cheap and convenient.

Next thread - we're almost giving the Royal style ones a run for their money Wink

So is it just Durham, Lancaster and Oxbridge freshers left to 'go up' now?

Simbobs; where is your son at university? My sons flat sounds identical, my son does a lot of gaming ( as knowone is very chatty in the flat!) and forgot to bring sharp knives!!

Witchend · 26/09/2019 14:36

80 hangers! Dd is taking 10!

bengalcat · 26/09/2019 14:44

Mine has a pack of five - might need more I guess depending on how many of my dresses she borrows/pinches

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 26/09/2019 15:24

DS took just the five hangers! He has very little smart clothing that needs to be hung up.

I'm curious that no-one ever seems to mention John Snow College in talk about Durham. It seems to be the forgotten one?

RaptorInaPorkPieHat · 26/09/2019 15:49

We bought a pack of 30 hangers but only took half (We were struggling on car space). We really should have taken them all, as she has much more hanging space than drawer space.

MrsPellegrinoPetrichor · 26/09/2019 15:52

Ds took 20 extra hangers as a friend suggested it as her ds didn't have any in his uni room. Da has no drawer space at all so keeps things in crates under his bed and on top of his wardrobe.

Benjispruce · 26/09/2019 16:06

Just home to find a cheerful DD who is feeling better about Freshers now she has ordered a few fancy dress accessories on Amazon. She’s talking of making a cake for the competition Hmm and she emptied the dishwasher while I was at work Shock

Benjispruce · 26/09/2019 17:56

NEW THREAD PLEASE!!!!

Jano69 · 26/09/2019 18:05

@NewModelArmyMayhem18 Neither John Snow or Stephenson College get much air time on this forum. Some of DD's friends are starting at John Snow this weekend. DS is joining Stephenson. All of them put Bailey Colleges as their preferences. I know DS was quite disappointed to get Stephenson initially (especially after meeting the grade requirements for Cambridge) but is now very excited about starting.
