I'm dropping DS2 off in St Andrews tomorrow too @ifonly4, I'll be thinking of you ( second year for us so much less emotional/ stressful for us).

@ifonly4 good luck to your DD tomorrow!

That’s a worry @MrKlaw Hope it is sorted soon. What did your ds have to upload a photo for? - don’t think my ds has done that yet...

Report
MrKlaw · 06/09/2019 19:52

@Decorhate not sure - something to do with registration. Library card maybe?

Report
Decorhate · 06/09/2019 20:23

That makes sense. I’ll badger ds again!

DS had to upload a photo - took about 20 goes to get on he was happy with...

It was for his student card which is also used as an electronic key for his accommodation - so maybe that?

simbobs · 06/09/2019 20:25

Mine needed a photo for his accommodation account. Not sure whether it is used for anything else. We just used a recent (appropriate looking) holiday snap. We had to do it for him as he was away at the time. Don't think he has even seen it yet.

Wiggly good luck for tomorrow as well, hope it goes well.

Thanks for the good wishes error (waves) and LIZS

LIZS I haven't picked up what happened with your DD, did she manage to defer?

Report
LIZS · 06/09/2019 21:37

@ifonly4 deferral request was declined today so she would have to reapply for 2020.

Thanks @Jennywrenny , I'll get dd to check her timetable again. At this point it will just decide whether we have to drive her (and all her belongings) back the evening before or the morning of the new term. She does normally have a 10am lecture that doesn't show up on that first day back, so hopefully nothing new will have crept in to get in the way earlier than that.

I am prodding dd to put together some sort of a list of what she thinks she does not yet have that she might need as we have this weekend and next weekend left to pack and prep - and she has her (4th) driving test next Saturday too.

And we are making plans around the dropping off day. Currently thinking along the lines of taking, dropping, doing the parents talk thing while she settles her things in, taking her and dd2 for dinner together then leaving her to it for the evening. We have the travelodge to stay the night so no need to rush away if she'd rather spend a bit of time there.

Did the Ikea shop with DS1 he used his old college ID and we got the discounts, it was very funny as it was full of mums and teenagers 😊 no men to be seen !

Had an email to say that DS starts next Saturday instead of Sunday. Had to laugh when he said "oh no, this means I will miss the village show". I think he means this tongue in cheek but not entirely sure.

Benjispruce · 07/09/2019 08:14

DD needed to upload a photo for ID too. I wasn’t involved thankfully.

Good luck with the drop-offs today @ifonly4 and @wigglybeezer.

What a PITA for your DD @LIZS and how frustating for your DS still not to know about accommodation @MrKlaw

LIZS hope it works out for your DD. If she reapplies and wants to know anything, just ask

Thanks @NewModelArmyMayhem18 - I’m a bit wobbly now - looking likely to be in the city (not ideal but at least with a group of first years), or shared (which he is really building up in his head to be a nightmare)

They have a room swap/waiting list thing so that would be our ‘why not try for a bit and get on the waiting list’ rather than him knee jerking into a year off which I don’t trust he won’t just sit on his arse (and not recommended for maths generally)

Good luck to all the ones heading to uni already 😊
After a very stressful 2 days with all the children in tow I think we’ve found a room for dc1. Can’t relax properly until the contract is signed as there were 10 others waiting to view it after we left yesterday but the woman seemed honest and has followed up with the messages dc1 sent her last night.
But the room is from the 1st October - a day that I’m supposed to be at work so might have to send dc1 off on the train to uni and bring her other stuff at a later date

Whee ware people finding timetables and reading lists? My DD seem more interested in what she is wearing than much else!!

Report
NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 07/09/2019 09:37

@ComeOnGordon that all sounds very positive. Fingers crossed.

What a pain that the room is from the 1st. October when you are back at work.

Have to say that we won't be able to get all of DS's kit to him in one go, so anticipating at least a day trip up to see him within the first month or so.

Mine doesn't seem to either dancing. Nor has he had to upload photos as far as I know. He has registered for a moving in slot but I have no idea if he's supposed to be doing anything else!

Report
simbobs · 07/09/2019 10:19

I've told ds that he should not aim to take the entire contents of his room initially as we don't know how big a room he has at uni - apparently they are all individual. He wants to take his guitar(s) and amp. We also may need to take one of his mates who has no transport, or at least some of his stuff. He's only just over an hour away and I would like an excuse for a visit a couple of weeks in. Dd is so much further away that this isn't possible.
Good luck to everyone who are waving off their offspring this weekend. Now to plan meatball (Ikea) trip

@MrKlaw - Good luck with the accommodation battle! Where is your DS off to again?

DS has been told his block and flat number - luckily one of the newer blocks. 15min walk to the lecture theatre.

There’s a bike shed next door to his block - do many people take bikes? DS is intending on taking his cos he knows it’ll be much quicker to get around to lectures, the gym etc. When I was at uni (obvs a million years ago!) loads of people took their bikes. What about nowadays?

@dancingdirty if your DD logs in to the 'evision' (that's what it's called at UEA but might be different at other universities) part of the website, once she's registered. there should be a 'student' section which will have such info. In DS's case there doesn't seem to be a reading list, although I am wondering whether he has been emailed one that I'm unaware of!
