Of course it is piggy Grin

Ginfordinner · 15/09/2019 09:30

They are at home next Saturday (21st) Benjispruce.
I work with a Geordie. She checked for me.

Piggywaspushed · 15/09/2019 09:30

DS is quite good at golf but he wouldn't do it by choice. We'll take clubs up at half term if needs be...

Benjispruce · 15/09/2019 09:31

Gin Durham uni starts the week after so I thought you meant 29/9. Are there 2 unis in Newcastle?

Piggywaspushed · 15/09/2019 09:31

Just occurred to me that DS2 has a giant brass instrument when the time comes....

I am already looking at places with catered halls!

Benjispruce · 15/09/2019 09:34

Quite refreshing that a student might play golf at uni piggy. He can always hire.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 15/09/2019 09:35

University of Northumbria is the other one @Benjispruce.

Benjispruce · 15/09/2019 09:36

Ah thanks New I wasn’t aware of that one and automatically thought Durham. Phew.

AtiaoftheJulii · 15/09/2019 09:36

Are there 2 unis in Newcastle?

Newcastle and Northumbria.

TailsoftheManyPaws · 15/09/2019 09:37

DS was worried about the possibility of readymade friendship groups all coming up to university together, as he knows nobody. However, he says he went round the meetup evening making a ‘People who Don’t Know Any People’ group and found some good company.

simbobs · 15/09/2019 09:37

Newmodelarmy, no not Nottingham, Sheffield.

thestarvingcaterpillar · 15/09/2019 09:41

@Mustbetimeforachange I thought so too but nothing obvious, I just wondered if other people's uni experiences were that there was a central collection place for post/parcels?

LillianGish · 15/09/2019 09:44

Hello. I'm a refugee from the infamous backpack thread GrinGrin Welcome on board.

BringOnTheScience · 15/09/2019 09:45

Piggy Brass? Crikey. Need to find halls with rooms for music practice. DC1 was told strictly no speakers/amps which is a bit of an arse for a bass player. The bass has been taken & we're investigating getting a small (ie hidable!) amp & speaker cab with headphone output.

Mustbetimeforachange · 15/09/2019 09:45

Is there some kind of reception desk? They might be there? DD's were on the outside wall of the building, DS1's at reception.

Benjispruce · 15/09/2019 09:49

caterpillar must be detailed in the welcome pack, DD’s is. Think they have a post pigeon hole and parcels go behind the desk at reception at her college.

blametheparents · 15/09/2019 09:52

@NewModelArmyMayhem18 - Thanks - I meant to update, but administering to the sick is a tough job!! Grin He’s getting there, but slower than I thought. I imagined that he would bounce back, but then I’ve never had any experience of tonsillitis before so ... !! Perhaps the antibiotics (while killing the infection) are making him feel a bit rough too.

DS has a large group going from school to his uni, along with a couple on his actual course, but he is still determined to make new friends and has arranged to go to some freshers events with his new flat mates. Just got to hope he’s well enough!

Benjispruce · 15/09/2019 09:52

Ah blame fingers crossed for him.

Chillywhippet · 15/09/2019 10:01

Waves at trewser My DD moving to Swansea on Thursday too. Bay Campus but will have bus pass to get to Singleton for some lectures and music.

sergeantmajormum · 15/09/2019 10:05

Dropped DD2 in Liverpool yesterday - happy with her room and flat of 6, met 2 flat mates and all seemed to be getting on well as we left. Long trip tho, we’re in SE so best part of 12 hours door to door with only 3 hours there! Held it together there but feel sad and flat today - her towels still all over the bedroom floor set me off. Echo PPs, they are on the brink of an exciting new chapter they have worked so hard for, whereas we are left with a sense of loss as well as huge pride. It does get easier (DD1 went 3 years ago) but when it’s the youngest there is extra change. BTW we chose her backpack together but I paid!

Shimy · 15/09/2019 10:10

@LillianGish This thread is so sane and full of ‘normal’ people I made the mistake of thinking the whole education board was like this (it usually is). I was going to post my backpack question here but at the time there was a mini conversation about accomodation going on and didn’t want to derail it, so thought it’d be best to have a new thread. Well see how that turned out Hmm.

bigTillyMint · 15/09/2019 10:28

@sergeantmajormum, if you can bear it, leave at 6 for a trip to Liverpool - don't know where you are in the SE, but when I go up from SE London leaving at that time, I can do it in 3 1/2 hours.

I haven't seen the backpack thread, but I can imagine it. My two are still using their Eastpacks from school days and I have one too (all look like new) - they are def worth the money IMHO!

sergeantmajormum · 15/09/2019 10:35

Yes will definitely leave earlier next time, plus M6 seems to have loads of roadworks. Unfortunately it turns out our car is not a Tardis so packing up took a while...😂

ZandathePanda · 15/09/2019 10:35

Trewster I am still chuckling at your ‘The thread that went wrong’ title.
Shimy good call to have a separate thread in the end. Didn’t ‘pollute’ this nice one. Still haven’t got a bag so I will scan through the sane posts later.

Gin hello! Did you know the accommodation blocks at Newcastle are staggered entry over several days? We have Sunday so Dds got to get in, unpack then get ready to go to the Students Union for the Rudimental event. It between that she hopefully find someone to go with!!

On Saturday I think Newcastle are playing Brighton at 17.30 so hopefully not too many away fans.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 15/09/2019 10:35

@bigTillyMint, I have advised DS to carry on using his Eastpak backpack too. It was rather dirty after years of being slung on the floor at school, but it's emerged from its deep clean wash looking almost like new.
