being less noisy and generally more considerate.

And therefore - looked at it from the other way round - possibly not overly impressed at discovering a load of freshers moving in amongst them...? (Just playing Devil's advocate here).

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 14/09/2019 08:52

Yeah, I see where you're coming from @MarchingFrogs...hadn't thought of it like that Grin.

Argh

Trying to pay rent but the university wants us to add as reference name/student ID/room number. But bank only gives a small space so no room for that. Help!

Do all banks only give 15-20 characters for reference?

minesawine · 14/09/2019 09:14

Rags DS has done nothing and probably won't. He's moaning as YouTube are charging to watch the video. I am gonna miss his lazy arse. It would be crazy if our boys become mates. My DS knows nobody but is very sociable

JennyWreny · 14/09/2019 09:20

MrKlaw Ours is quite short. In these circumstances I usually put the most important details (I would have thought Student number and then room number if you can fit) and then follow up with an email saying that I've paid £XXXX on DATE with the reference of XXXXXXXXX and please could they confirm receipt. I'd also include a screenshot of the confirmation.

EleanorReally · 14/09/2019 09:27

dd went to a party last night and hasnt come home!
great start to our journey

JennyWreny · 14/09/2019 09:32

Oh no @EleanorReally I hope you find her soon and have a safe journey and good moving in day. Time for Brew and Cake while waiting for her?

EleanorReally · 14/09/2019 09:38

thank you,
this time tonight i will have even less knowledge of her whereabouts

bigTillyMint · 14/09/2019 09:40

@EleanorReally, that sounds like my DD! Though TBF, she came in at a reasonable hour this morning Wink and we are about to leave to take her back for her final year. The boot is full, but she brought less than half her stuff home Shock

EleanorReally · 14/09/2019 09:44

apparnetly the boyfriend's new phone alarm didnt work Shock not shocked

Jo4Laurie · 14/09/2019 10:14

@JennyWreny I am dreading my DD going next weekend as it has been just the two of us for so long. I have joined a gym and plan to go swimming at least twice a week after work. Also intend to start internet dating at last! I guess she will be home some weekends and holidays but it is a new chapter! If she is happy it will be ok, just hoping all will go well...

Piggywaspushed · 14/09/2019 10:23

Yes, we go tomorrow newmodel. just done last shop. Couldn't find over door hangers so he will have to cope until he can get some from the Asda Living next to his halls.

The students being housed in Newport are Bristol Uni students.

Benjispruce · 14/09/2019 10:43

piggy I bought an over-door hanger but I’m thinking it might not fit over a fire door, which they are in uni halls, at least it doesn’t fit over our fire door into our garage. There are hooks at my DD’s college rooms though.

WaxOnFeckOff · 14/09/2019 10:45

Over door hanger didn't fit on DSs door and no hooks either.

MarchingFrogs · 14/09/2019 10:54

@EleanorReally Quite late last night, DH asked me whether DD was likely to need picking up from anywhere, or was he safe to get ready for bed.

She hadn't actually gone out - he just assumed that she had, because she is hardly ever in at the moment.

I have made it plain that I am expecting her to stay in next Friday night, though not with much expectation of success...

RaptorInaPorkPieHat · 14/09/2019 11:11

I've not bothered with the door hangers, I decided to wait and see what the doors are like when we arrive. That, and they have a used stuff (left by last years students) for sale at 'bargain prices' at the freshers fair so DD can always pick stuff up if she needs to.

We're not there til friday.... fellow NTU student @minesawine, although I daresay different campus (Brackenhurst). There's been some building done since we visited back in Feb, so it'll be interesting to see how it looks now (we deliberately didn't book the new accommodation in case it was delayed). I know there's been issues with the new lecture theatre which definitely isn't ready after this happened earlier in the year www.nottinghampost.com/news/nottingham-news/part-nottingham-trent-university-building-2796033

It is very weird to think that this time next week, we will be empty nesters.......

Good luck to everyone moving in this weekend Smile

boys3 · 14/09/2019 11:26

I hope all of those experiencing accommodation issues manage to get these satisfactorily resolved. Bristol of course does have a somewhat chequered past when it comes back basic pastoral care, in which I'd include 1st year accommodation provision. However 23% increase in student numbers at Bristol over the last five years will put pressure on accommodation, and equally on rental prices living out in 2nd and 3rd years (or beyond for the longer courses). Perhaps some honest stats should be a requirement for all Unis to publish in terms of % getting first choice accommodation, those pushed into higher cost, made to live in a different country etc. Rant over :)

Stunning weather where we are today so hopefully the same for all moving in today / tomorrow. Best wishes to all those DCs.

@NewModelArmyMayhem18 Just noticed your comment to me about infamous backpack thread. I ended up getting something not that expensive in the end. It was from one of links given on that thread but ordered a different brand.

Bag

It seems quite sturdy and roomy, fits Ds’s laptop plus a folder and (books at the same time if need be) and has additional pockets. The shoulder straps are quite comfortable and the back is padded (DS has a problem with his back). It even has a USB port which he is quite taken with & it’s waterproof! (nod to Wales) Wink. The only thing left is to ship him off next week!

ChangeItChild · 14/09/2019 12:31

One excited and nervous boy successfully delivered to to the University of Liverpool!

Moving day was run like clockwork with plenty of help on hand and trolleys for all their stuff, very impressed.

Shimy · 14/09/2019 12:31

Just to add DS hasn’t had a backpack for the last 5yrs so had no idea he might even need one. He was at an indy and none of them carry bags, they all carry their books under their arms, so there was no reference point for trends, brands etc hence why I thought I’d ask what other people dc used before buying something.

We’ll trial this one, and if he doesn’t like it, then it can always be
changed.

RaptorInaPorkPieHat · 14/09/2019 12:32

Shimy I've literally just bought DD a laptop bag (what a terrible parent I am) having looked through that thread. We got this one

I then threw caution to the wind and bought a power bank to put in it Grin

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 14/09/2019 12:40

That looks a good option @Shimy. As I said, DS was lucky to get an Eastpak one as a product trial on MN a few years ago and then it became the brand to use at his boys' school. I would never have invested £50+ in one myself but on the basis of how impressed we've been by it, bought DD one for secondary school. Mind you, that did spectacularly backfire because she found the padded shoulder straps uncomfortable (????) and by Yr 8 had worked out that all the 'it' girls use branded black ones.

This buying stuff for uni is proving very expensive, isn't it?

@ChangeItChild glad to hear that your DS has been safely delivered and is excited.

@Piggywaspushed good luck for tomorrow.

@RaptorInaPorkPieHat

They do seem like very good bags don’t they? and very smart too.
You bought a power bank too? 😡, did you consult with your ‘student’ first? that’s just unforgivable!Grin

RaptorInaPorkPieHat · 14/09/2019 13:02

I may have made amends by letting her order it via her amazon prime account........ but then stuffed it up by paying for it Wink Will I never learn!
