Just back from Hull. We got lunch , too!

Impressive opportunities for politics students at Hull.

The accommodation at Hull is the nicest I have seen, and they have reduced it to £100pw (non en suite rooms but 1 bathroom between 2)which is certainly very good! Nice campus, too. City is obviously not so nice and these things need to be balanced out, I suppose. Hull is his highest offer.

Shimy · 16/02/2019 18:19

Just got back from Swansea. Where do I start? So impressive. Stunning computer science department and stunning university. It just got even harder for DS now to decide.

LIZS · 16/02/2019 19:15

Just booked Edinburgh offer holder day, plus travel etc. Is anyone else's child feeling the pressure to attend these? Dd got a handwritten note this week from one she had already dismissed but now feels obliged to go. Confused

Piggywaspushed · 16/02/2019 19:17

We haven't really had much pressure. The only pressure for DS comes from me! Grin

Shimy · 16/02/2019 19:36

Handwritten note, nice touch Wink. No pressure here except the pressure from me.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 17/02/2019 08:58

Well DS was emphatic he didn't want to do offer holders days and has now finalised his firm and back-up universities. All seems a bit of an anti-climax TBQH.

Good on you for getting your DC to attend them.

Hull sounds increasingly like a good choice for your son, Piggywaspushed. I wonder, do many of the universities tick all the boxes?

Shimy, glad you were really impressed by Swansea.

True;I'd be surprised if a university could meet every requirement. I don't think, in all honesty, he'll get the grades for Hull. Poor old DS2 was dragged along all day. He was better behaved than DS1and DH though!

Lincoln next week which is the potential unconditional.

Piggywaspushed · 17/02/2019 09:05

On the bright side OP, your DS is decisive!

We didn't go to Hull Open Day but I very much got the impression that the Applicant Day was the same material, so your DS may have a point!

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 17/02/2019 09:11

Poor old DS2 was dragged along all day. At least it might help him make some early decisions about which universities he likes the look of (or not)? How far off applying is he?

Dd has just booked her Durham ‘sleepover’ and train ticket. A friend from another school is going same dates but different accommodation so they are going together.

Piggywaspushed · 17/02/2019 09:12

He's in year 10 so some way to go!

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 17/02/2019 09:35

Scabetty that's a good way to do it. DS might have been more enthused if he'd gone with school friends but none of his friendship group seems to have applied there (or they're all going 'en famille').

DS2 has tagged along to a couple of open days / campus tours with DD and myself, one just for a half term minibreak (Exeter - no good for him, as he wants to do Architecture), one mainly for a day out by a different seaside from our own (Sussex - they don't offer Atchitecture, but Brighton does). He will be coming to UEA with us as well; he and I are travelling up to Norwich earlier in the day than DD tomorrow so that he can have a look (if not a proper visit) at NUA.

It is posdible that his version of being a guest of DD's at her offer holder day will consist of a visit to the Sainsbury Centre and then getting the bus back into the city centre to check out shops / market stalls selling stuff he wants for his GCSE Art work, but I have suggested at least availing himself of the free lunch while we're thereSmile

MarchingFrogs · 17/02/2019 09:51

possible...

Scabetty · 17/02/2019 10:34

Ds1 is year 11 but only came to the Durham open day last summer as we were doing an overnight stay. He says he wants to do his own visits in year 12. I thought he would have liked to visit Loughborough with us but he declined. Has no idea was he wants to do anyway Confused

Shimy · 17/02/2019 16:06

Is anyone going to UEA offer day tomorrow?

MarchingFrogs · 17/02/2019 17:55

Is anyone going to UEA offer day tomorrow?

Tuesday (I hope?!).

Shimy · 17/02/2019 18:47

DS’s applicant day is tomorrow. There are several dates.

sluj · 17/02/2019 21:54

We go on Saturday and get to see DS1 at the same time 😀

VanCleefArpels · 18/02/2019 07:26

A breakthrough here - DD has decided not to go to the offer holder day for her putative second choice next weekend, and will firm her first choice when she gets back to school after half term. It’s all getting real folks 😳😂

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 18/02/2019 08:33

VanCleefArpels well done to your DD (my DS has made his mind up already too).

What happens after the young people have submitted their finalised university choices - do they get any 'blurb' from the universities, or does it all go quiet now until A Level results day?

OP posts:
LoniceraJaponica · 18/02/2019 08:57

DD got an email to confirm her choice. She applied post A levels so only selected one anyway. She has registered to apply for accommodation when applications open in April, and is going into town today to open a student account ready for student finance application next month.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 18/02/2019 09:04

Thanks LoniceraJaponica.

Dd also got an email confirming her offer(she already has her grades). A week later she received her accommodation offer which we have accepted and deposit paid. I am really impressed about how organised the uni is, but they seemed pretty switched on on the offer day and back in September when we first looked around. It is starting to feel real now.
