Some places I think it's more like entering for a ballot, and/or they try to match up groups with similar characteristics eg quiet or clubbers.

VanCleefArpels · 31/01/2019 13:43

Kent also allows application as an offer holder and do allocate on a first come first served basis

minesawine · 31/01/2019 13:53

Fazackerley My DS didn't get an UiF offer from NTU and whilst disappointed, is still really keen to go there. He also has an offer from UEA but is not so keen. I hope your DD is OK, and chooses whatever is the best course for her.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 31/01/2019 14:22

Strangely my DS wasn't fussed at all that he didn't get an UIF offer from B'ham (although pleasantly surprised that he did get one from York).

Offering accommodation on a 'first come first served basis' is a rather cunning way to get young people to 'firm' sooner rather than later. It's not right really, is it?

She'll be fine. Just having a strop.

coleoptera which is why being able to apply as an offer holder is a bit fairer than requiring to firm before being able to apply, but I appreciate that late applicants won’t get offers till in some cases months after those quick off the mark in Sept/Oct

At Kent open day I asked exactly that question of the acc9modation people. Basically if you are on the list then later don’t firm or come there as insurance you just get struck off the list and everyone else shuffles up one place. They don’t actually allocate until after the results in August, but then do so in order of application. I think this is a fairly unique system though, most others will require you to firm before you can access the booking system, and will either do first come first served allocation, or random allocation within your stated preferences (which might be named Halls or just type of room / price bracket eg catered, en suite or whatever)

Fazackerley · 31/01/2019 16:12

You'll need a password for your NTU ID before you can book your accommodation.

"To get your NTU ID password you need to have confirmed NTU as your first choice on UCAS Track"

So you need to have firmed NTU by 6 Feb to book accommodation.

Shimy · 31/01/2019 18:55

Just name marking on the brand new thread Smile.

No, don't panic - that's just the date that booking opens for 2019/20.

^All new students are guaranteed accommodation

If you’re a new student at NTU, you can relax because you're guaranteed a place in one of our University-allocated residences – as long as you bookbefore 31 May^

So I went to a L6 evening for DS3 today and the speaker from Uni of Nottingham confirmed UiFs were bums on seats for lower ranked unis and a marketing ploy for other higher ranked at at those higher ranked ones were usually made to students with at least a BBC prediction. Apparently some of their subject rankings is based on the predicted grades of their offer holders so it was a direct ploy to up their rankings.

One of the reasons for the growth in UiFs is the fall in the number of 18 year olds so it is a "buyers' market" for student.

However she also stated tha Nottingham will not be offering UiFs from next year because the ploy to up their ranking with higher achieving students hasn't worked because their stats show that generally the students with UiFs are missing their predictions by 2 grades!!

It was a real eyeopener!

Piggywaspushed · 31/01/2019 21:13

hmmm, yes marching but my concern is that some NTU accommodaion is (considerably) off campus.

Fazackerley · 31/01/2019 21:45

Dd wants to be off campus and so do most of the people in her fb group!

errorofjudgement · 31/01/2019 22:02

Placemarking on the new thread

Piggywaspushed · 31/01/2019 22:14

Really? At NTU??

Fazackerley · 31/01/2019 22:22

Yes, her course is at clifton but they want to live in the city.

Piggywaspushed · 31/01/2019 22:26

hmmmm.... they keen to travel over there every day?

justasking111 · 31/01/2019 22:43

DS lived in halls in parkland 20 mins from uni. In his 4th year he returned there to finish his degree. He said it was great to get away the buses ran until late evening unless you have oodles of money living where it is all happening can be depressing.

BringOnTheScience · 31/01/2019 22:59

Just placemarking on the new thread. Still waiting to hear from Edinburgh. More pressing is the driving test next week!

VanCleefArpels · 31/01/2019 23:03

And whilst all first years are guaranteed accommodation at NTU some of it is really not very nice even if close to the City campus. On that basis I’d want to be very sure of getting chosen accommodation by applying when the virtual doors open

Fazackerley · 01/02/2019 08:15

Well she's not firming them until she's heard from Bath so we'll see. She also has a low offer from Swansea which shes not visited yet. I think the course sounds brilliant there but she's not too keen on actual Swansea as a place to live.

LoniceraJaponica · 01/02/2019 08:28

Is anyone's DC going to an offer holder's day in Newcastle next week?
