Wow that last thread filled up quickly. Well done to your DS, Piggy!

Another offer in for DS : Portsmouth. 112 pts , which is higher than I'd expect . It was meant to be his 'if no one else takes me' type uni , but there you go. That's higher than Lincoln and the same as Aber, so it'll go.

Piggywaspushed · 21/12/2018 20:06

Just hacked into DS's email to establish Portsmouth is also offering unconditional if firmed. Just NTU and Hull to hear from. DH still anti Aber, despite its reputation.

Track seems to be down until Chistmas Eve for some reason.

bizzey · 21/12/2018 21:53

Piggy that is good news. Lots to think about over the holidays .

Southampton have acknowledge his application today ...so at least it wont be lost in the christmas lull. I suppose thet will be it now till January.

Please may i ask why offerrs are coming in as points/ numbers ?

Piggywaspushed · 21/12/2018 21:57

I think some unis do grades and some numbers. Aber have said BBC but not specified the subject. I know some unis do, whereas points is juts a direct calculation. In theory, points can be accumulated from other sources as well as just the full A Levels. (eg an AS, or an EPQ).

I think generally the 'lower ranking'/ newer unis use points and the more established ones use grades.

bizzey · 21/12/2018 22:06

Ahh thank you .

BringOnTheScience · 21/12/2018 22:51

@bizzey To complicate things further: a few of us have DCs doing the International Baccalaureate which is graded in points. If you see us quoting numbers in the 30s or 40s, then it's for the IB.

If it's 100+ then it's for UCAS points.

TheFrendo · 21/12/2018 23:22

The points per grade..

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UCAS_Tariff

A* 56
A 48
B 40
C 32
D 24
E 16

Serin · 21/12/2018 23:40

DS applied to 5 unis for adult nursing.
First 2 weeks of Dec were a nightmare with interviews at all 5 but all have now offered him places. The last one (his favourite) came through tonightSmile

GloriaHeather · 22/12/2018 00:28

Hi... I am a little bit gutted. DD has firmed Anglia Ruskin. She had an offer from Southampton 😩 gutted.

TheFrendo · 22/12/2018 00:51

GloriaHeather,

Is this a timing problem or a question of preference?

Was you DD just eager to make things definite?

GloriaHeather · 22/12/2018 01:59

Hello, she says she wants to go there and preferred the feel of it. I came with her to both... I don't understand how she feels that way. She always said if she had an offer from Southampton, she would go there, but obviously not!!! She never told me she was firming her choice in and I can't believe it's Anglia Ruskin.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 22/12/2018 06:54

GloriaHeather will she be based in Chelmsford or Cambridge? I could see why you might be swayed by the thought of living in Cambridge rather than Southampton?

OP posts:
MarchingFrogs · 22/12/2018 06:59

@GloriaHeather, is the ARU campus (Chelmsford? Cambridge?) more local to you (or less?) than Sourhampton? What subject has your DD applied for?

Iis there a partucular reason that she felt she wanted to choose her firm and insurance so early, given that the deadline is the beginning of May? If she does change her mind again, she needs to act quickly.

errorofjudgement · 22/12/2018 07:00

Great to see a third thread, I’m not posting much as DD is auditioning for drama schools, though still through UCAS.
I am following everyone’s journeys though, and wishing everyone’s DC the best of luck and congratulations on the offers coming through.
In good news DD has 4 auditions in the first 2 weeks of term and then we expect it to all be over so DD can put this round behind her and focus on just the usual stuff!

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 22/12/2018 07:20

Good luck to your DD errorofjudgement - that's going to be a hard fortnight for your DD but very much hoping it will pay dividends.

anniehm · 22/12/2018 07:38

Finally got offers from DD's preferred university. Very proud of her getting 5/5 offers but now the hard work begins, needs AAA. A bit of positive news is she's got her letter recognising that she gets extra time (dyslexia) which they refused for AS due to her old school not passing on paperwork, we had to pay for new testing (there wasn't time last year)

errorofjudgement · 22/12/2018 07:40

Thank you Flowers
Unfortunately it’s very unlikely to lead to success this year but still worth a try!
Luckily DD should have 3 A levels to fall back on, so could look at academic courses next year.

PhannyMcNee · 22/12/2018 09:33

So DC1’s application went in just over 2 weeks ago. Eng Lit & Modern History combined. Her choices (in preferred order) are Edinburgh, Newcastle, Manchester, Cardiff and Bath Spa. So far she has offers from Newcastle, Cardiff and Bath Spa.

Interview in Feb in Bath and open day invite for Newcastle. Logistics may be a bit of an issue as we live in Cornwall Confused

Piggywaspushed · 22/12/2018 11:10

I empathise with your logistics issue . We have an applicant day offer on a Weds in Aberystwyth. Setting adide DS's absolute reluctance to go anywhere or do anything, the logistics are failry prohibitve. But , I'm not sure how much difference those days make, although I am sure it's nice to meet other prospective course mates.

I am surprised Bath Spa is interviewing. No offence to it , but it seems unusual for a university of lower entry requirements, when very top unis aren't routinely interviewing any more! Is it tempting to knock that one on the head if she already has two other offers (and no doubt more to come!) , or are they very aspirational for your DD?

PhannyMcNee · 22/12/2018 11:26

It’s her safety net and the contextual offer is CCC. We think the interview would turn it into an unconditional offer. She hasn’t been to any open days as until October half term she wasn’t going to apply for uni! Predicted grades are AAB (Eng Lit, History, Chemistry). Offers so far are AAA from Newcastle and ABB from Cardiff

PhannyMcNee · 22/12/2018 11:32

I think there is value in her trying to visit them as Cornwall is very isolated and a different pace of life to much of the rest of the UK. It will also help her realise the realities of getting there and back under her own steam. She is the eldest of 4 and dh and I both work so it’s not necessarily easy to drop everything to transport her. She oroginally booked into a February open day at Newcastle not realising that it will take the best part of 3 days to get there and back for a 3 hour ‘session’! They are on a Wednesday so she would need to leave Tuesday afternoon and get back Thursday evening. And then there’s the cost of the train tickets Shock

PhannyMcNee · 22/12/2018 11:34

Where are you having to get to Aberystwyth from? That was on dc1’s first short list until she worked out how to get there Wink

Piggywaspushed · 22/12/2018 11:37

Good Luck to her! I grew up in the West of Scotland and deliberately applied for faraway unis. In the end, when Bristol invited me for interview, it felt like a bridge too far and I withdrew. Ironically, I never did go home after my first term at a closer uni!!

We both work, too, and are both teachers, so time off isn't at all feasible. We could bung DH on a train but I fear he would end up wanderign around Aberdeen looking for Aberystwyth uni.

Have you checked whether Newcastle helps towards expenses ? Aber does.

Piggywaspushed · 22/12/2018 11:39

We/ he have to get there from the East of England. Our area has just been identified as easily one of the worst areas for public transport links in the East.

TheFrendo · 22/12/2018 11:40

The Bath Spa interview could well be less about assessment and more about sales.
