Hi a new thread with DC applying to Vet Med next year or for anyone with DC already studying who could pass on some words of wisdom!

My DD is looking to apply to Cambridge, Surrey, Nottingham and Bristol.
She has a fair amount of work experience arranged already and we will do the open day circuit next year.

scotandcharlene my dd has also booked offers day at Liverpool Smile

follygirl · 20/01/2020 07:12

Thanks everyone, good luck.

Scottandcharlene · 21/01/2020 08:34

What a morning. My dh was giving our dog his anti inflammatory tablet. He has it in a bit of cat food as he doesn’t like taking them. Somehow our normally ridiculously fussy cat ran in and snaffled it. Emergency vet said it could be serious so cat is currently being treated to try and make it sick. In the middle of all this dd rang to say Nottingham had just rung with an offer for September! At 8.00 am! She was driving to school. Thrilled as it is her first choice, now back to worrying about the cat!

3catsandadog · 21/01/2020 09:35

Well done for your DD on the Notts offer Scottandcharlene :)

Hope your cat is okay!

Thanks. The cat is ok but has to have liquid charcoal 4 times a day today which is a messy business. It will give dd a chance to practice her skills later!

Bati · 21/01/2020 14:41

Dd had a phone call from Nottingham about an hour ago with an offer for the April intake 😊
We have decided not to attend the Edinburgh interview now as she has her 2 favourite offers so we think it would be unfair to attend knowing she would not take a place up there if offered a place.

Congratulations to your dd scotandcharlene on her offer for nottingham 😊 hope your cat feels better soon, we had something similar 6 months ago when our puppy got hold of some chocolate and we had to rush him to the vets so they could give him something to make him sick. He was absolutely fine afterwards thankfully x

3catsandadog · 21/01/2020 14:47

Great news Bati re Notts offer and we had to do the same fo one of our cats when he ate raisins and the dog when she ate chocolate!
We had no problem with work experience at our local vet ;)

Great news Bati, what a lovely position we all find ourselves in. Just the grades to get now....

We had a dog that had to spend a night at the vets because it ate wallpaper paste years ago. We’ve done our best to provide dd with plenty of experience Grin

mumsneedwine · 21/01/2020 16:31

And still we wait. Poor DD is a bit fed up. Although she didn't really want to go Notts anyway and has her favourite 2 offers. But still .....
Think just want to hear from last 2 now and put the whole thing to bed. Well done everyone - does everyone now have at least an offer somewhere ?

Scottandcharlene · 21/01/2020 16:47

It is horrible waiting mumsneedwine. My dd was fed up last night too. There doesn’t seem to be any pattern in Nottingham’s method. They are mixing up September and April offers and some rejections too. We are still waiting to hear from Bristol, who don’t seem to have given out many offers at all. I hope your dd hears soon.

mumsneedwine · 21/01/2020 17:05

Thank you. Suppose she is lucky to have heard from Bristol. Off home after long day at work. Kids are tiring !!!

Bati · 21/01/2020 19:04

mumsneedwine it's horrible waiting.
Dd had an interview middle of December at RVC but hasn't heard back from them and no idea when she is likely to hear either.

Anyone know how the Nottinghams accommodation will work for the ones starting in April x

follygirl · 23/01/2020 12:11

Sorry to hijack again.
Just a quick question about references.
Apart from specifying dates/hours etc so they really need to mention the following:

Time keeping
· Appearance
· Confidence/ ability around animals
· Confidence/ ability with people
· Dedication
· Commitment
· Use of initiative
· Attitude
· Personality
· Whether or not you’ll make a good vet

I've taken the above from the student room.

Thanks!

Scottandcharlene · 23/01/2020 13:11

Some of dd’s references were lovely, with details about what she did and what a pleasure she was, but others were very basic and just stated dates and minimal detail about the type of placement. I don’t think there is a requirement for a lot of detail but ideally it would be on headed paper, dated, signed and include the name of your child and dates worked. Surrey’s website gives a description of what they require and in our experience was the most demanding so if they fulfill their requirements that’s should be enough (I only have experience of Surrey, Liverpool, Nottingham and Bristol).

follygirl · 23/01/2020 15:03

Thank you so much

mumsneedwine · 23/01/2020 17:05

RVC offer just arrived. DD a bit shell shocked. Notts told kids they are doing them in batches so might go on for a while yet. Not sure she cares at the moment 😂. Poor thing has a 4 hour shift at Waitrose before she can have a hug.

3catsandadog · 23/01/2020 17:12

Hi MNW well done that is excellent news :) Hopefully not too much longer to wait for remaining decisions ....

OP posts:
mumsneedwine · 23/01/2020 17:14

Only the 1 to wait for now. And Notts must have had lots of phone calls as DD said someone on TSR has been told they are emailing them to explain their process.

3catsandadog · 23/01/2020 17:18

We are waiting for Bristol and got a feeling it may be a long wait as they have a reputation for being slow to make decisions generally.

Congratulations to your dd mumsneedwine. I think your username is the most appropriate for this thread. We all need wine to get through this process!

mumsneedwine · 23/01/2020 17:45

I may have drunk rather a lot of it during these hideous applications ! Medicine was bad but this seems worse somehow.

3catsandadog · 23/01/2020 17:51

I think it does seem worse it was the forms! I may have to change my user name one of the cats is really poorly :(

I am so sorry. Sick pets are so stressful and upsetting. We lost out dog to cancer last year and DDs took it v hard as they had grown up with her. Then in August we got a rescue puppy who is just lovely and filled a big hole.
And yes, you're right it is those forms. DDs first attempt at RVC form, which took her over 4 hours, crashed. She lost everything and had to redo it from scratch. So makes all that work worthwhile. However I'm not sure I'd want to tell eldest its more stressful as she'll just throw UCAT back at me. That was devised by a sadistic mind.

3catsandadog · 23/01/2020 18:05

I know they are part of the family. Be glad when its August!

Sorry about your cat 3cats. Ours seems to be fine despite having the dog’s tablet, but he has definitely lost a few of his 9 lives. The forms were awful, as was fitting in all the work experience. It’s a long haul and very stressful at every stage. It will be good to get to the point of firming offers, but until we hear from Bristol that has to wait.
