Welcome to the new thread! Can't believe we are on the 4th already

@Baytreemum @specialted DD spent last weekend on an 11 hour shift shadowing a surgical CP1. Apparently you need to join the relevant society and they organise stuff. Mine loves Obs and can't wait to deliver a baby

specialted · 07/03/2020 22:42

Gosh don't think my dd does any of that stuff!! She has been playing medsoc netball a lot at the weekends, is In Leicester this weekend playing a varsity match. I know she is fascinated by gastro stuff and went to a women in surgery event the other night which totals inspired her.

mumsneedwine · 07/03/2020 23:06

@specialted mine was cheerleading today - went to watch yours play netball today. I'm imagining it's getting messy tonight !! DD joined a few societies where she heard some fun opportunities could be found.

Movingmountains · 08/03/2020 07:53

Mine has just finished clinical
Exams and seems to be enjoying life - he says this is a much harder year than first year as there is just so much to learn. Think extra opportunities have been far and few between this year because of that. He is beginning to think about intercalation - I know your DD does it as part of her course @mumsneedwine but what are others views on this?

Pepermintea · 08/03/2020 08:54

DD was adamant before starting that she didn't want to intercalate, but now wants to (I thought this might happen!) She wants to intercalate in global health, which she would have to do somewhere other than Cardiff. They can do it after year 3 or 4, but Cardiff only release 15 a year to intercalate out of Cardiff, so we shall see!

specialted · 25/08/2020 09:19

Just wondered how everyone was??
Dd really looking forward to returning to uni in a couple of weeks. She's been back to her house over the summer several times to meet up with friends. She starts her bmedsci this year, so first six months will be writing her dissertation , which actually will fit in well with Covid restrictions etc. Then I think they have placements from March. Hope everyone is doing ok

booface · 30/06/2021 15:00

I randomly came back to this thread. I wonder how we and our fledging doctors are getting on. My DS has just finished his intercalated year at Edinburgh. I think he will be happy to get into his last 3 clinical years from August. How is everyone else getting on?

OP posts:
specialted · 30/06/2021 15:27

Nice to hear from you @booface , glad ds is getting on ok. Dd doing third year exams this week, in fact is doing her osce as we speak. She has done her integrated bmed sci, including dissertation which I think she's glad is over! Followed by a 17 week placement staying at Lincoln hospital. Think the teaching there was brilliant, but she's happy to have her specialist placements next year in notts and derby so she can stay in her house. Only a 2 week summer holiday this year before embarking on next placement. Also third year medics do a musical this summer, they are doing grease which will be a nice respite from placements.

mumsneedwine · 30/06/2021 16:17

Hi ! Mine doing OSCE today too (probably because she is at Uni with @specialted DD 😊). She has been in Notts on wards for 17 weeks and absolutely loved it. Starts obstetrics in July followed by Paeds. And got her first choice speciality next year at Rampton hospital (she's always liked serial killers 😳).
Big exam on Friday I think and then she's coming home for a week. She's not seen her sister since Xmas !
And she too is doing the medics musical.

mumsneedwine · 25/07/2021 15:04

Was thinking of all your kiddies (big ones now) and hope everyone is doing ok. 4th year started for mine, clubs back on the agenda and first half marathon to be run next week.
Big hugs to you all

Lovecatsanddogs · 25/07/2021 15:22

Cant believe they are going into 4th year!

Any thoughts about Foundation years stay where they are, move home or try somewhere new?

mumsneedwine · 25/07/2021 15:48

DD thinking of staying in Notts, or maybe trying a new city like Liverpool or Edinburgh. Unlikely to come home as it's too expensive, and also is v sure she doesn't want to work in London. She's on Obs snd Gyny for next few months, and having seen how forceps deliveries are done told me she has a lot of sympathy for me now 😂

Lovecatsanddogs · 25/07/2021 15:53

Yes mine is thinking of staying or maybe Cambridge area fir a change. Doesn't seem to keen on moving back home either!

mumsneedwine · 25/07/2021 16:12

@Lovecatsanddogs well have nice holiday homes to visit 😊. Glad your vet is having fun too - mine's had such a fantastic time but don't like to say too much on vet thread as know some have had a v tough year. She helped calf this morning using some machine thing. Not enjoying the 4.30 starts this week though 😂

Pepermintea · 25/07/2021 17:43

Hi all. I was adrinkofwater back in the days of applying! DD has one more week of year 3 left to go! She is now seriously thinking of intercalating after year 4 in global health, so F1 still a way to go, although I'm pretty sure she'll stay in Cardiff. She did an SSC this year in health care for the homeless - produced an e learning resource that it going to be used by health inclusion in Wales which she is very excited about. Hopefully having one hospital placement block in Germany next year, covid permitting!

Hope everyone's DC are doing well!

mumsneedwine · 25/07/2021 18:09

@Pepermintea lovely to hear it's going so well. That resource sounds amazing.
Weirdly mine's already started year 4 due to Notts weird intercalated degree - she now has a BSc in Medical Sciences. V happy to be a CP2 and passed exams as so much on line last year.
So many exciting times ahead for them 😊

specialted · 26/07/2021 21:34

Dd also doing obs and gynae placement (same place I think @mumsneedwine !) she is very excited to be going to the sexual health clinic tomorrow!. She was talking about going further north possibly for foundation year eg Newcastle or Sheffield . She seems to be drawn towards urology ent or dermatology so far. All seems to be going so fast now!

mumsneedwine · 27/07/2021 08:24

@specialted I believe they are on same rotation 😊. DD said the only male patients they'll see for a while are at the clinic.

Pepermintea · 14/01/2023 10:50

I know that we've not used this for a long while, but wondered how everyone is doing, especially as it seems to be when some people are hearing about F1 jobs!!

DD is intercalating this year (not loving it - so knows she doesn't want to do research!) so not applying this year. One of her friends just found out that she had got her first choice job though, which made me wonder how everyone's DC on here are doing!

DD also got married between Christmas and New year, so it's been a busy time!

mumsneedwine · 14/01/2023 12:28

@Pepermintea wow, married ! Congratulations. That sounds v grown up.
The F1 jobs now are for academic places which required an extra interview - did ask DD to explain it but as she wasn't interested she hadn't got a clue (although a couple of friends had applied). Rest come out in March I think.
DD on last rotation, done SJT, couple of exams left to go and then making the most of some time off to go do some of the travelling she had to cancel in 2020.
I'm looking forward to being a little bit richer as will only have one left at Uni 🫣.

Pepermintea · 14/01/2023 12:36

Thanks @mumsneedwine ! I know! I can't believe I have a married daughter!

That makes sense about the academic jobs. The friend's is in med ed! I don't really understand how it works alongside "normal" F1 things, but explains why I've not heard about anyone else finding out!

Hope that the rest of your DD's final year goes well and that she enjoys her traveling!

specialted · 14/01/2023 18:39

Wow congrats to your dd @Pepermintea ! Lovely to catch up with people's news. Dd same as @mumsneedwine , prescribing exams and finals looming. Dd going to Philippines and Vietnam for her 'elective'. No work planned, just a holiday with a house mate. On last placement before exams, surgery , which she is enjoying. Can't believe they finish (hopefully!!!) this year . @mumsneedwine and I are planning on meeting up for the first time at their graduation! Funny how they are friends and we keep missing each other!

mumsneedwine · 14/01/2023 19:23

@specialted 😊 we are getting that champagne together this year.

booface · 17/01/2023 19:45

So lovely that this thread has come back online. Wonderful to hear the news of your very soon to be doctors! And weddings too! My DS is in Edinburgh where they all do 6 years so he’s a bit behind yours. But the end is in sight! That sounds a bit negative - he’s really enjoying the placements. Those of you that have graduations coming up I hope you have fun making plans.

specialted · 23/03/2023 17:32

Well that's hopefully the last exam done! (Hope there's no resits!) Dd heading to South Yorkshire for fy1&2, which she's very excited about. Can't believe it after five years ! Hope everyone's dc are doing ok
