Looks like we need a new thread.

Given what UNIQ is about, I think you'd expect that Justanothermile. I don't think it carries with it the implication that Oxford expects all applicants to plagiarize.

Justanothermile · 05/09/2018 20:48

I meant the word 'passion', I'm not fully sure I understand goodbye, probably me, I wasn't expecting anyone to plagiarise anything.

OhTheRoses · 05/09/2018 21:57

Well we are home. Brilliant day. Dd was allocated her room on the drive home. Sounds good.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 05/09/2018 22:02

That's good Roses :) dd has had her room allocated too. It's an ensuite with some decent cooking facilities, for a pretty decent cost, so she's done well.

I quite understood that 'p' was for passion Justanothermile. UNIQ is intended to help support a particular set of DC, who on the whole don't have access to the usual advice (obviously some exceptions to that rule get through). They might need pointers in a way DC at expensive high achieving indies do not. I don't think the fact that these things are offered at UNIQ implies that Oxford thinks all DC, however advantaged, should be squinting over other DCs' work to frame their own. I was clearly too cryptic, sorry.

HesMyLobster · 05/09/2018 23:02

Oh good news on the rooms Roses and Kitten!
DD has resolved herself to the fact that she might not receive room details in advance - there has been talk of students at her college being handed a key on arrival and that's the first they know of their allocation.
Not sure if that's true, but as we are still yet to hear anything, she is going to pack the absolute essentials only and we can always send extra things later if wanted/needed.

Hubbleisback · 05/09/2018 23:21

Lobster yes DS will just get key on day too. Random allocation.

goodbyestranger · 06/09/2018 08:35

All of mine just got their key on the day - I'm not sure knowing a room was eg Staircase 2, Room 3 would have given them much insight ahead of time unless they'd gone up and done a recce.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 06/09/2018 09:00

That'll be a nice surprise then Lobster and Hubble! Grin Do facilities vary much in your dc' colleges? They vary wildly in dds. They get to choose a rough how much they are willing to pay and if they have any medical reasons they can say if they have any requirements/desires. After that it's pot luck.

OP posts:
Hubbleisback · 06/09/2018 09:15

Apparently rooms at DS's college vary greatly in size but facilities are the same and everybody pays the same amount.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 06/09/2018 09:26

oh ok, then for your ds, it's probably not so useful information, more just interesting information.

Rent varies quite a lot at dds, so we had budgeted for maximum rent. Given she therefore has no idea what she will be paying next year, it means that we can squirrel the extra aside for next year.

HesMyLobster · 06/09/2018 15:17

Yes, rooms vary wildly (in size, price and facilities) at DD's college.
That's why we were hoping to have some idea before.
She was asked for her preference of price bracket, but no guarantee she'll get that, or anything close to that.
I was hoping to know bed size (some have doubles, some singles) and whether she has an en suite or not at least!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 06/09/2018 15:32

That's really tricky then Lobster! Has she had a peek in student room at her college in case anyone's said anything there?

dds had a letter from her tutor now. So things are running apace at her college.

DS Has already had lengthy reading list, essay and maths assignment to be done before October!!

Heffapotamus · 06/09/2018 18:06

HesMyLobster - my DC has been told that they'll hear about room by 14th Sept. Same college I think.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 06/09/2018 18:19

dd just had one maths booklet, which was all straightforward a level stuff, so that's all done. It's a weird waiting game now.

HesMyLobster · 06/09/2018 23:50

Thankyou Heff, that sounds promising! Exeter? I'll keep my fingers crossed. It will give us a week to get sorted at least!

HesMyLobster · 06/09/2018 23:53

DD might not have heard much about important matters such as en suites . . Wink
But she was sent a reading list in May, and a book of vocabulary and grammar exercises in June, so she's had quite a head start on the work preparation.

Heffapotamus · 07/09/2018 00:07

Yes, that's right HesMyLobster. A week will have to be enough!!!

Hubbleisback · 07/09/2018 09:20

Why only a week? When do yours start Heff and Hes?

Heffapotamus · 07/09/2018 11:41

30th September is drop-off day - and we know nothing about rooms yet.

HesMyLobster · 07/09/2018 12:57

DD is going on 23rd - her course has an extra week before Freshers week. She'll be staying in a different college for that though and then moving into her college on 30th along with all the other freshers.

Lucycat · 10/09/2018 15:50

The English tutors in DDs college have just put the third reading list up onto their website ( major cock ups in admin).... DD has got lots of meet ups planned with friends this week before they all head to different Unis - shall I tell her that she needs to read Charlotte Bronte- Villette by the first tutorial and Bleak House by week 3 with lots of Tennyson thrown in for good measure 😂 this is in addition to the Eng Language A level that she needs to catch up on and Beowulf to read..... 😂😂😂

Hubbleisback · 10/09/2018 19:55

2nd October for us. Pleased to have DS for a bit longer!!

riverbank23 · 10/09/2018 20:24

First time poster (please be gentle) DD is going to Oxford on the 30th of this month, i've just been looking at the term dates and it says she needs to leave by 10am on the Sat 1st Dec, i'm wondering if there is any flexibility on this time as I am a 5 hour car journey away and also can anyone explain the 0th week to me please as it says she needs to be back by Thursday of the 0th week so would it be ok for her to return on the Sunday before that Thursday? (i'm thinking this would be the 0th week)
