Hi there. What subject was that for Lobster?

marmiteloversunite · 05/01/2018 18:10

Great news Lobster. Always good to get some offers in the bag before hearing about Oxbridge.

HesMyLobster · 05/01/2018 18:25

In the space of half an hour she's gone from elated to miserable Hmm

She's decided that Durham must know the Oxford decisions and have made her an offer only because they know Oxford has rejected her.
This is based purely on the fact that she knows 2 people currently at Oxford and they were both rejected by Durham Confused

Hubble25 · 05/01/2018 18:27

Just stress. She is not thinking clearly. Many more people are at Oxford who had offers from Durham. No way would Durham already know!!

HesMyLobster · 05/01/2018 18:28

Help, she has applied for Classics.

She was told just before Christmas not to expect to hear anything until after the official UCAS deadline, so it was a complete surprise to hear today.

Helpuschoose · 05/01/2018 18:35

Thanks Lobster. I've heard that rumour before about Durham and to put it in the most erudite fashion I can muster – I believe it to be complete boll-ox. Why on earth would Oxford and Durham risk allsorts of data protection issues by getting on the phone to each other and sharing info. It's a nice theory but totally without foundation so tell your DD not to stress too much. Having said that we are waiting for an offer from Durham here and it would be very nice to have at the moment ahead of ahead of next week's statistically likely rejection from Oxford

OhYouBadBadKitten · 05/01/2018 18:48

oh Lobster, the poor love. Stress really creates bonkers thinking. Of course that's not the case. She just needs to hear from Oxford and be put out of her misery. It's a shame she can't just enjoy the offer from Durham for the moment, but stress is never logical.

So DS friend heard today she has been pooled for Cambridge!

RaindropsAndSparkles · 05/01/2018 20:23

Gosh really Hubble?

Hubble25 · 05/01/2018 20:29

Yes really. Apparently 5th was earmarked as day to be contacted about pooling and she had a phone call after college.

RaindropsAndSparkles · 05/01/2018 20:55

Bloody hell Hubble. Oh well dd's either yes or no then Wine.

Oh Lobster, poor wee lass.

marmiteloversunite · 05/01/2018 21:05

What does pooling mean?

Hubble25 · 05/01/2018 21:09

At Cambridge it may mean you are going to be given an offer by another college without interview or you may be invited for interview.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 05/01/2018 21:13

dd knows someone who has been pooled. They only tell those who need another interview, most pooled students don't have another interview and will only find out on the 10th that they were.

OP posts:
Hubble25 · 05/01/2018 21:19

That would make sense! So makes no difference unless you are asked to interview except your offer could come from a different college.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 05/01/2018 21:20

exactly :)

You need a degree in Oxbridge Application Process to start with. I still feel like I would only qualify for a third.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 05/01/2018 21:27

you do! Maybe though its better to be in blissful ignorance and just get a nice surprise /nasty shock, dunno really! It helps dd I think to understand behind the scenes. It helps me a lot.
I'll see if I can find a link I found useful....

marmiteloversunite · 05/01/2018 21:31

It's certainly been an education for me!! So grateful to have all of you as a sounding board!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 05/01/2018 21:32

student room link

OhYouBadBadKitten · 05/01/2018 21:33

I don't know if that helps? for us it's soothing to be able to imagine what might be happening behind the scenes.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 05/01/2018 21:34

oh and it's a few years old, so stuff may have changed.

PandaG · 05/01/2018 21:35

Hi all. Not been on here for a while. This time next week we will know if they have offers or not. Glad DS has had his birthday, Christmas and NY to take his mind off it. He and 20 mates are currently having a belated 18th birthday party downstairs...not hosted a house party before!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 05/01/2018 21:40

ok, reading on in that thread, it's all different now. Maybe I shouldn't have posted it. But it was quite interesting.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 05/01/2018 21:41

ooo good luck PandaG!
