Hopefully this is in time!

You are very brave PandaG!!!

Hubble25 · 05/01/2018 21:44

Kitten started looking at the link and then decided it was the stuff of nightmares for me. Obviously the pooling system at Oxford is of more concern to us but I am sure it probably runs along the same lines. DS was pooled whilst he was there so will try hard not to think about the consequences of that too much. Strange to think this will all be academic this time next week (although DS has already mentioned reapplication!!!).

Hubble25 · 05/01/2018 21:45

Well done Panda. I feel your pain.

PandaG · 05/01/2018 21:51

It is noisy but I did warn the neighbours!

RaindropsAndSparkles · 05/01/2018 22:00

Dd's attitude on results day was "Oxford had their chance". She has said more than once since "i don't want to be the girl rehected by Oxford and Cambridge."

OhYouBadBadKitten · 05/01/2018 22:23

I do regret posting that!

RaindropsAndSparkles · 05/01/2018 22:27

Don't worry kitten we've all posted things we regret. If you do nothing you can never do anything wrong. Off topic but did you go to a London meet-up in about 2012/13? It's just your name seems so familiar.

goodbyestranger · 05/01/2018 22:28

Lobster please tell your DD that six of my seven DC have applied to both Durham and Oxford and the experience of all six completely disproves the theory that Durham Admissions are in cahoots with Oxford. And that's quite apart from the point that it would be far, far too complicated and with such little practical benefit to Durham that neither uni would have truck with it anyhow. Your DD has an offer from Durham because she's a strong candidate and they want her, end of. The theory also conflicts with the other urban myth that Durham doesn't like applicants who have also applied to Oxbridge.

HesMyLobster · 05/01/2018 22:53

Thankyou Goodbye, and the rest of you.
I took her out for dinner and the cinema to celebrate and she is back to being delighted and relieved - all conspiracy theories forgotten, for now . . Wink
She's booked onto an offer holder day in March and we're looking into making a little mini break out of it so we can explore the city a bit.

Yikes to DC hearing about the Pooling at Cambridge! I knew it was done differently to Oxford but had no idea they were called back for more interviews! When will the additional interviews be? Will they squeeze them in before decision day? That's not a lot of notice if you have to travel far! Shock

OhYouBadBadKitten · 05/01/2018 22:54

I did raindrops. Apart from education at the moment, I mostly hang out in the weather section on mn.

They happen after dday lobster. It's harsh for them I think to see friends getting answers and they still have more to do.

Good luck to those in the Cambridge pooling system. Like you say, it takes hours of study to understand it and even then some of it remains a mystery. Ds1 was downhearted about being reallocated from Worcester College because he had a friend who also applied for music to Worcester who didn't get reallocated. I reassured him it was a random process but then I read that all colleges get to earmark the candidates they really want to keep (I haven't told him that). But I don't know what the truth is anyway.

Thanks to those who explained about the difference in standard offers (or not) between Cambridge and Oxford. In my day I remember a couple of people at my school applying and getting 3Ds as offers. That would be nice Grin

HesMyLobster · 05/01/2018 23:18

Wow that is harsh. We thought waiting for January 10th was dragging, I can't imagine then finding out there's even longer to wait.

Interesting comment from DD tonight. She said in some ways she can't wait for D Day, to know once and for all.
But in another way she doesn't want this waiting time to be over - she says it feels full of hope and anticipation, and she loves the very idea of that "maybe" and isn't ready to let go of it yet.
It made me wonder if reapplication and a gap year might be on the cards for her too, despite being dead against the idea previously.

RaindropsAndSparkles · 06/01/2018 10:21

I was opposed to gap years but both my dc have had them and have grown up/changed their perspectives massively in the short time between August results and Christmas. Both mine have shifted in their subject choices too.

Allthebestnamesareused · 06/01/2018 19:11

Hate to be the bearer of bad news but someone above stated pooling by Cambridge meant an offer from another college or being called for further Interview. Sorry to be a Debbie downer it can also lead to no offer too.

Hubble25 · 06/01/2018 19:31

Thank you All the best for clarification but I think I used the word may. But you are right to make it as clear as possible.

Risotto301 · 07/01/2018 06:59

Counting down - 3 more days to go!
Coincidently it's my last day at work on Jan 8 when DS will be flying back to UK from HK. Then I will be all free and alone (DH continues working - to earn the international tuition fee!) on Jan 9 and 10!! Can imagine how nerve-wracking it will become on those two days, especially in HK we start the day 8 hours earlier!!

Anyways, good luck to all mums here and your DCs as well!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 07/01/2018 09:16

A bit of a new life for you Risotto?

I have meetings for much of Wednesday that need a lot of input from me. I have no idea how I'm going to focus, or what I will do if a text comes in part way. Nor will I want to turn my phone off entirely. argh! I did think about rearranging them, but that seemed a bit OTT and given that dd has exams that day, a bit pathetic of me Grin

OP posts:
RaindropsAndSparkles · 07/01/2018 09:34

Calm on the outside here except dd was being sick at 4.30am. She assured me she didn't make herself sick but i don't believe her.

Risotto301 · 07/01/2018 09:52

Kitten, its just change of job. New job will start in March.

DS said he managed to minimise his expectation for an offer but I don’t know how true it is. The pressure will add up when he is at school and seeing his classmates getting offers while he is waiting. According to his experience with the interview offer, his college is slow/late in sending emails as it’s the largest number of applicants.

Saker · 07/01/2018 11:22

Ds1 has mocks Mon-Wed. Luckily the exam on Wednesday is in the afternoon so hopefully if something arrives in the morning he will be here to open it immediately. Having said that our post rarely comes before 1pm so if it's a letter I may have to wait.

RaindropsAndSparkles · 07/01/2018 12:28

I thought we were expecting emails Saker

OhYouBadBadKitten · 07/01/2018 13:10

Cambridge is definitely emails. I don't know about Oxford as I don't lurk in that part of student room.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 07/01/2018 13:11

your poor dd raindrops. I hope she's feeling better. There is a tummy bug going round,

Hubble25 · 07/01/2018 13:19

Re-arranged my day as thought DS might need me on hand.
