University offers for 2018? (Part 1)

OK, I know I'm a bit early, but let the hand-holding begin...

Come and join us if you (and your DC) are about to start the UCAS process in September - applying for a place in 2018.

I've got DS1, who wants to do Computer Science in 2018. Looking at various Russell Group unis and maybe Oxbridge.

OP posts:

New to this thread. Was on the 2016 one for DD quite early on but DS is so laid back as to be practically horizontal that his application only went off last week.

Luckily the 6th are on the ball with a reference already made up and today he had his first two offers. AAA from Exeter (aspirational but achievable if he stops being so horizontal!) and BBC from UWE (the 'if it all goes tits up' choice). He's holding out for Sussex though as he loved it when we visited. If it's a tie between Exeter and Sussex, I suspect the latter will win as they offer a £3k bursary for AAA.

MollyHuaCha · 13/12/2017 23:39

Ooh, I haven't heard of the Sussex scholarship before. Do you know if it is automatically given if you get AAA, or do you have to apply for it in advance?

MollyHuaCha · 13/12/2017 23:40

And is it for all subjects?

user19283746 · 14/12/2017 02:14

*I agree, the offers ARE ridiculously high. So far we have AstarAA, AAB, ABB and BBB.

I think my own course a few decades ago was accessible with CCD.*

But there has been massive grade inflation since a few decades ago. - far more students get AAA+ than twenty years ago.

One way to see this is via maths courses, who often do standard tests for their incoming students. Students coming in with AAA+ nowadays do worse than students coming in with BBB/BBC did on very similar tests twenty years ago.

NapoleonsNose · 14/12/2017 07:15

I think it's automatic. We went to a finance talk when we were there and I'm sure it was £3k in the 1st year and £1k for the following two years for AAA. I'm going to check their website to make sure I heard right.

NapoleonsNose · 14/12/2017 07:18

I stand corrected. It's £3k only in year one, but is automatic

Exeter sometimes offer £1k academic scholarship for AAA to outstanding applicants too.

Quite a few unis do I believe and it's done automatically

OhYouBadBadKitten · 14/12/2017 07:47

Southampton have scholarships for a small number of applicants in some stem subjects.

toomanytolist · 14/12/2017 10:02

An offer from Imperial late last night for Engineering for DD, very pleased for her as she thought the interview had been grim

HesMyLobster · 14/12/2017 16:07

Ah well done Toomany's DD, brilliant news!

toomanytolist · 14/12/2017 17:20

Thank you Lobster Grin

prettybird · 14/12/2017 23:28

Ds is over the moon - he's just got an Unconditional from Strathclyde Grin

He says it's probably 5th out of 5 of his preferences as it is his "home" university - but it's done wonders for his confidence , as their supposedly minimum requirement is more than he actually got for his Highers Confused

We are already prepared for Edinburgh, his 1st choice (which he has applied to twice) being late in replying - so early news would in fact be bad news - but he's now more hopeful for Aberdeen and Dundee.

Lolimax · 15/12/2017 21:36

Happy Proud mammy post! DS’s UCAS form finally went off at 11am this morning (bloody college). He’s only applied to one uni. Specific course and location, borderline SEN and issues.
By 3pm he’d had a personal email from the course lead saying there was a conditional offer on its way but as he was such a strong candidate and made a lovely impression at open day if he didn’t reach the grades he is to phone.
And they’ve offered a bursary.
This is a kid who left school at 16 with 2 GCSE’s at D and E.
Now nearly 20 he’s growing up and I’m so proud of him!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 15/12/2017 22:43

That’s fab lolimax!! Well done him. And prettybird and toomany. Happy weekend!

Risotto301 · 24/12/2017 05:34

User, my son got 4/5 of his conditional offers and the minimum is AAA! no B is allowed! i think the offers for Science subjects are usually higher than the Humanities ones?

toomanytolist · 26/12/2017 00:51

That's fantastic Lolimax, well done your DS and well done you!
Happy proud Mummy indeed!

inchoccyheaven · 26/12/2017 01:08

Hi all hope it's ok to join you. My ds1 has had 4 out of 5 unis so far offer him an interview. One is a telephone one which he is quite scared about doing and not actually booked in yet.
What advice have you given your dc for interviews?

devondream · 01/01/2018 09:32

Happy New Year to everyone and welcome heaven.

2018 will be such an important year for our DC. Wonder where they will all be and how much they will have changed by the end of this year.

bruffin · 01/01/2018 10:12

Dd has 4 interviews lined up, just waiting to hear from Cardiff. Ucas only went in just before christmas so not waited long, but the others got back really quickly.

Littledrummergirl · 01/01/2018 14:56

Ds1 has had his first interview. My advice was to dress smartly in something he felt comfortable in, think before he answered any questions and then talk through his thought processes.

He felt his interview went well (and everything he's said to sounds positive ), he had some interesting discussions. He is hopeful of an offer.

His next interview is in a couple of weeks.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 01/01/2018 18:16

Happy New Year all!
Choccy, I just told dd to be herself. Also same as LittleDrummerGirl, to remember to think out loud.

It struck me earlier that this is probably the year that they leave home.

MollyHuaCha · 01/01/2018 19:08

The Molly household now has:

One DC with five offers (though getting the required grades will be no walk in the park)

and

One DC still yet to complete the Ucas application. Adamant they want to go to uni next autumn, but still not even decided which course to apply for. Confused

StellaTins · 01/01/2018 21:19

DD sent her form off at the beginning of December and got all 5 offers within 10 days, including 2 unconditionals.

She's absolutely not an A grade student and I'm so proud of her I could burst.

raspberryrippleicecream · 03/01/2018 23:46

I posted near the start of the thread, but then went quiet as DD wasn't sure if she was going to apply this year.

UCAS was finally sent off the week before Christmas and she had 2 offers within 48 hours, so was a very happy girl!

One was unconditional if firm, the other (Exeter) will drop a grade of firmed.

HesMyLobster · 04/01/2018 10:38

Oh that's brilliant news Raspberry, I'm so pleased for your DD Smile
