OK, I know I'm a bit early, but let the hand-holding begin...

Come and join us if you (and your DC) are about to start the UCAS process in September - applying for a place in 2018.

I've got DS1, who wants to do Computer Science in 2018. Looking at various Russell Group unis and maybe Oxbridge.

TheS, good for her. Those look like a good range. My sons' friend is hoping for Bath (different subject, results tomorrow). Might she consider medicine instead? My brother read medicine and loved it.

TheSacredCow · 16/08/2017 09:33

Lucysky2017, funnily enough, DD was thinking about doing medicine. But I happen to work in one of the medical colleges, on the business side, not with students.

I talked to one of our very senior medical tutors and he said that with DD's GCSE results, she wouldn't have a hope of getting into medical college. The results were 2 x A*, 7 x A and 2 x B, one of the B's was Maths.

We also struggled to find any work experience placements in medicine. However, she did some work experience in labs and really enjoyed the work.

We are also not wealthy, so would find it hard to pay for the summer courses that are available.

mumsneedwine · 16/08/2017 13:12

Sacredcow you have been given rubbish advice I'm afraid. I have a student who has 1 A*, some As and some Bs and he has a place at Imperial this year. Some Unis are GCSE heavy, some are UKCAT heavy (& couldn't care les what your grades are as long as meet their minimum) and some use the BMAT. And some use a combination !!! It's a complicated process but there's lots of info out there. Yours can certainly apply and the person who told you otherwise needs a good spanning.

mumsneedwine · 16/08/2017 13:13

And I can't spell 😁😁

IGNORE. Wrong year! Wrong thread. Wrong wrong wrong. Hopefully MNHQ will delete!

Good luck all.

We are overseas and ds is applying to Leeds, Warwick, Lancaster, Bath and Loughborough for accounting and finance. Personal statement is finished so just waiting for school to complete their part and he is ready to submit. There are only about 4 or 5 students in his year applying to the UK, others are applying to US, korea, Germany and Australia. Netherlands is also very popular due to low fees.
Ds took two AS levels with his iGCSEs so not waiting for any more results. He switched schools for 6th form and is now taking the IB diploma instead of A levels. He is predicted a 45 and Leeds wants 35 and Warwick 38 so he is feeling quite confident at the moment.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 17/08/2017 17:58

dd got what she needed to apply for the universities she likes. I was a leetle bit scared tbh, but she did it :) so now I guess it's a matter of finalising her personal statement and onwards...

I hope others dc are happy too if they had results today.

voilets · 17/08/2017 20:55

My DD did great too. Phew. ☺

newbed · 17/08/2017 21:07

I'm just found this thread. May I join please.

My son did ok in As levels a b and c. Just handed first fraught of Personal statement to careers teacher for approval.

He's looking at staying in NI.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 17/08/2017 21:16

welcome to the thread newbed. I love your typo, very apt Grin

voilets · 17/08/2017 21:36

Yes. Fraught. That was my DD at 7am.Grin
And mum thinking oh no -another year of this 😀

OhYouBadBadKitten · 17/08/2017 21:52

I can't believe we have to go through this again, with added interviews, entrance exams and yay/nays from unis along the way.

newbed · 17/08/2017 22:24

GrinGrinGrin
Just noticed that. He's my oldest so first time through this since I did it 25 years ago. Has it changed much lol ?

HesMyLobster · 18/08/2017 00:09

My DD got what she was hoping for too - phew!
I was a LOT more nervous for her than I expected to be considering it was "only" AS results . . .
Didn't sleep much last night, and after having spent this evening talking my (even more clueless than me!) DH through the whole process of predicted grades/ personal statement/university applications/ aptitude tests/interview/offers/firm/insurance/exams/grades/clearing . . . Etc . . . I don't think I'm going to sleep well for the next entire year! Confused

First time through the system for us, DD is our eldest and neither of us went to university so it's all brand new - I think I'll be here a lot for hand holding!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 18/08/2017 07:57

I don't think I will be able to either Lobster, I want dd to be happy and for her to be able to follow the path she would like to without too much upset or stress along the way - as we all do. I wish I were a chilled out sort of person!

Icouldbeknitting · 18/08/2017 08:24

My husband's comment when hearing about DS's unexpected C at AS was "well it won't affect his final A level result will it?". Yes, clueless husband it will. Your child has only taken AS levels in unreformed subjects so the best he can do next year is now B. I have tried to keep DH in the loop regarding A level reform, the admissions process, clearing or anything else educational but it looks as if he would be a C candidate in "pre-uni parenting"

One more open day in about a month and then unless DS comes up with some more choices we're done.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 18/08/2017 08:43

It's so complicated with the mix of reformed and unreformed subjects.
dh appears to be relying on me for all the info and guiding too. I've made sure he has all the info, but argh.

Lucysky2017 · 18/08/2017 14:44

Although my son who had 2 reformed subjects did one grade better than his twin doing 1 reformed subject only (they both had AAAA in AS the year before) so it was the opposite of what I thought. I thought the one doing the reformed subjects was more likely to do worse as none of that AS grade to feed in but I was wrong (unless that B is upgraded to A if he has it remarked I suppose).

errorofjudgement · 18/08/2017 14:53

On the non-linear courses. I assume it's still possible to re-sit the AS exams next summer though and take that grade towards the A2?

needastrongone · 18/08/2017 15:23

That's my understanding, DS feels he screwed up one of his FM papers. His sixth form and maths tutor assure me he could retake all of the 7 papers he took if he so chose.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 18/08/2017 17:23

It is error.

Littledrummergirl · 18/08/2017 23:41

Hi everyone.
Ds1 wants to be a vet. He shocked me tonight when I said those three words- personal statement draft. He has already started it!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 19/08/2017 07:35

Good for him LDR :)

GnomeDePlume · 19/08/2017 07:48

Looks like this is the place for me!

DD did well in her Maths A level so now onwards to year 13 and further maths, physics and chemistry. Maths is modular and physics and chemistry both reformed subjects. DD plans to retake a couple of papers from the maths to try and achieve the highest possible grade.

Off to Glasgow open day in a couple of weeks then Bristol and Sheffield. DD wants to study Chemical Physics with a placement year which limits the number of potential open days (phew!).

Now need to mention the personal statement issue.

Onwards, onwards, only one more year!
