My DD was home last week for Spring Break, now gone back and won't be home, probably, until the end of May. She only gets Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter Monday off for Easter, and is going to her boyfriend's parents (meeting them for the first time!).

LIZS · 15/03/2017 09:49

Ds is off on a trip on Saturday and misses the last week of term. It means he has 2 assignments to do for Friday , packing for the trip and the rest of his stuff needs collecting as his room is being used over Easter.

JWIM · 15/03/2017 10:23

DD also on Spring Break but not coming home. A friend is visiting her from the UK for this weekend. Back mid May.

Dunlurking · 15/03/2017 10:59

Ds is pulling a few late nighters this week in order to meet essay deadlines. Then he is off on a society trip so comes home a week late. He still seems to have 4 weeks at home for his Easter holiday though Confused So looking forward to having him home as it is unrelenting GCSE revision stress with dd at the moment (all pressure from her, not us). Hoping he will diffuse things a bit (although they might just fight).

Cherryburn · 16/03/2017 08:14

DD is home (picked her up Saturday) and is already revising for collections/prelims next term Shock She has 6 weeks off though so we'll see how long the motivation lasts!

She's had a great term, done lots of society things and appears to be doing really well on her course. It's lovely to have her home.

Leeds2 · 16/03/2017 16:28

Just found out from DD that she has got the accommodation she wanted for next year, a four person apartment. Just had a look at it on you tube, and it is very nice - only opened in Sept 2016 so new but hopefully any teething problems will have been sorted!
They have what seems to me a very complicated system of getting accommodation (been explained to me many times, and I still don't really understand!) but seems to include one of the group being allocated a time slot during which you get priority booking. Looks like DD got lucky, as she says hers is the most sought after accommodation.

EllenJanethickerknickers · 16/03/2017 18:21

DS1 finishes on Saturday and as he doesn't pay for his accommodation over Easter he has to completely move out. By 10am! Argh! I miscalculated and thought he finished next weekend so have arranged to go to the theatre on Saturday meeting at 12.30. I can just about do it, but will have to get up at the crack of dawn on Saturday. I'm out Friday night too...

Dunlurking · 18/03/2017 16:49

Ellen I hope you managed it and made it to the theatre. Ds facetimed last night and it was a relief to hear he'd made his essay deadlines this week. He seemed proud that one was finished and sent at midnight, rather than a more usual 2am. When I asked what would happen if the internet went down overnight deadline day he just looked at me and went "Mum - I'd just send it on my phone"

Huh - this assumption that it's OK to work up to a deadline! I did a Post grad certificate at a uni only a couple of years ago where you had to actually physically put a paper copy of your assignment into a box in the department reception on the morning of the deadline, and sign your name. I would finish it 2 days early incase my laptop crashed or the printer failed.

LIZS · 18/03/2017 17:08

Sympathies dunlurking. Bearing in mind ds is now away for 10 days, one essay due yesterday got handed in at 1am , the other assignment due next Wednesday was "almost finished" which dh discovered meant it was 500 words short and would probably be finished mid Atlantic today Hmm I did ask what might happen if there were tech issues uploading via hotel wifi and was met with a shrug! He also has to choose next year's options by mid week.

Dunlurking · 18/03/2017 17:27

LIZS glad to hear my ds is not the only one - good luck to yours for his final 500 words and choosing his options. Hope he remembers, in the excitement of his holiday/trip. Are you away with him? Have a nice break if so.

LIZS · 18/03/2017 17:29

Sadly no. It's a uni trip so hopefully others will remember the options deadline if he doesn't!

Leeds2 · 18/03/2017 22:30

It is my DD's birthday today. First one I have ever not seen her for at least some of it.
Hope to Skype tomorrow.

hellsbells99 · 19/03/2017 09:18

Happy birthday to your DD Leeds2. Make sure you treat yourself and have a drink in her absence Wine Flowers

jaxxyj · 19/03/2017 11:48

Happy Birthing day to you for yesterday Leeds! My update is DD lost her keys on St. Patrick's day night and so has gone to visit her friend in a nearby city as she can't get in her room until Monday. She has a couple of essays left to do before Easter then 2 exams finishing mid May. DS has a job working in a children's respite facility which he will be great at, he has essays and assessents up to end of April and is finished then as he has no exams! I suspect he will stay "doon Sooth" if he has a job and accommodation. We are all going on holiday to Spain at Easter for 9 days which I am looking forward to!

Leeds2 · 19/03/2017 17:33

Thanks for the birthday wishes, hells and jaxx. From the photos on FB, it looks like DD had a good day. And I had a bottle of wine to celebrate in her absence!

Teenagedream · 20/03/2017 12:22

My DS is finally sorting out a house for next year. 4 sharing in a small terrace house in Cardiff. Any ideas how much to budget for bills?

Huskylover1 · 20/03/2017 19:50

Oh, can I join this thread please? It's my son's 20th birthday today, and same as Leeds it's the first one I won't be seeing him for. Sad I know this is how it goes, of course. He is only 30-40 mins away from us, but stays in a private rental with Uni pals, and will be spending tonight with his GF of 11 months (quite rightly). Normally, I would have taken him to lunch or dinner, but he has been in lectures and stuff all day, so no chance. DD is also away at Uni (2.5 hours away), DH is at work, so it all feels a bit flat sitting here on my lonesome, lol. When I pause the telly to get more wine I can hear the clock ticking, FFS! Aargh....lol

Leeds2 · 20/03/2017 22:13

I hope your DS has a lovely birthday, Husky.

Unmumsnetty ((hugs)) from me.

dottygamekeeper · 20/03/2017 22:24

Not been on this thread for ages - DD finished at York on Friday, but is staying at uni this week as is off on the ski trip next Friday, then not coming home til 8 April, for a week. Her brother finishes term on 7 April, so is also coming home on the 8th - it will be lovely to see them both, as I havent seen them since Christmas, but I have got rather used to having the house to myself now...

Both seem to have been doing well, and both have sorted out accommodation for next year, at approx £100 pw each (incl bills), which is cheaper than halls and for DS just a couple of minutes stagger from the studio and 5 mins to the beach!

DS has to hand in his portfolio just after Easter, then has a couple of weeks of lectures and is finished (though we have to pay for halls until end of June!) whereas DD doesnt finish til late June. Neither are planning to come home for much of the summer - their contracts on their rented houses start at the beginning of July and summer work prospects are much better where they are than in rural Suffolk.

marymoocow · 21/03/2017 07:25

Another 2 weeks before DS comes home for the Easter break, however we have seen rather more of him over the last 2 weeks than we imagined as MIL passed away. It has also been his birthday and my birthday during this time, so it has been a time of mixed emotions to say the least. He seems to be fully embracing uni life and thoroughly enjoying his course. It's hard to believe how worried we were about him moving away now this time last year!

homebythesea · 21/03/2017 13:08

Had the dreaded "I'm feeling low, can I come home" text from DS last week - a combination of way too much partying (sigh) terrible food in Halls and falling out with some others over a group project (ultra irritating, and apparently no-one gets marked down if they don't pull their fingers out. Counts for 20% of the module too). So he came home, slept a lot, ate a lot, did some work and went back refreshed I hope. It's all the learning curve I know, and I don't want to get involved in the nitty gritty but you just want them to be on an even keel don't you!

OhFuds · 21/03/2017 16:53

I haven't been on here in a long time, my last post was that I was worried about DD and accommodation for 2nd year as she wasn't staying on campus and was planning on renting with her friend who was waiting on hearing if she got in at uni and another friend who was at a different uni in the area. Well it all turned out fine, they signed with a company that is only for uni people so it's my DD and 2 of her friend's from a different uni. If her other friend gets a place then she can be added in at a later stage as the accommodation sleeps 2-4 people. It's slightly more expensive than the accommodation that she could've had on campus but I suppose she has a en-suite and knows who she is sharing with, I think she will enjoy 2nd year more than 1st as she's back with old school friends.

DD is home soon for 3 weeks and then her last exam is May 13th so I'll collect her and clear out her room in hall's on 14th and that'll be her home until September. I can't believe how quick the time has gone! Feels like last week we were buying all the supplies for starting.

NormaSmuff · 21/03/2017 19:59

this fell off my active conversations.
dd planning to come home for mother's day.
but then back to uni, she wants to work (for money) and despite applying near home, had no success.
so back to uni for a bit then back home for a couple of weeks

hellsbells99 · 23/03/2017 07:47

Mary - sorry to hear about your MIL Flowers
I had a day off yesterday and went to visit DD in Leeds. She if off on a uni trip for a week on Friday so I took stuff that she needed and ended up helping her pack. Several friends came and knocked on her door whilst I was there which was lovely. All seemed nice and normal! 1 young man off her course came to see her to talk about an assignment so it was encouraging to see they are still working hard 😉 I get the impression from DD that the year is nearly over already. After Easter she only has 2 weeks of lectures left, then a revisions week, then exams which finish by the end of May. She hasn't got a job for the summer yet - she has applied for a couple of internships but not got replies. She has just been out with her housemates for next year and said they were all looking forward to getting the house at the beginning of July.

LIZS · 23/03/2017 13:25

Ds is also away for his birthday which seems strange. Will celebrate when he's back next week.
