LIZS I think on balance its best to be registered there (Uni) in case of incidents just such as these! You may recall we had a bit of a drama about registering with the Uni health centre and an ongoing repeat prescription but it's worked out fine and they even slightly overprescribed to get him through the holidays at Christmas so they are obviously cognisant of the problems of having essentially itinerant patients!

Squirrills · 06/02/2017 19:28

I agree that registering at uni is the best option. When they come home the local GP will still see them as a temporary patient if needed in holidays (in fact they still have copies of their records). Whereas uni health centres are reluctant to do that. It's a pain because they usually have to find yet another GP when they live off campus in 2nd year.
If they have an urgent problem it's stressful enough without having to start finding a GP to register with.

homebythesea · 06/02/2017 21:42

Squrrills why would they need to change GP when off campus? They are still students!

Teenagedream · 07/02/2017 07:48

My DS tried to register at doctors on uni site and was turned away as his accommodation is not in there area. He's in private halls but not far away. It must depend purely on address and not whether you are a student. So they could possibly have to change drs each year depending on where they live. Rather ridiculous

LIZS · 07/02/2017 08:17

Thanks. Think I'll get him to check if he can stay registered next year before deciding. He will be renting reasonably close by and I'm not aware of another local practice.

Squirrills · 07/02/2017 12:41

homebythesea Maybe not all unis the same but DS1 at Warwick was only allowed to stay with the campus health centre while in halls.
He has stayed with the same practice in second and third year though despite changing address.

homebythesea · 07/02/2017 12:58

Thanks Squirrills- I will get DS to check! It's the teaching hospital on his campus so one would hope that they continue to treat students regardless of their residence. Having to go through all the palaver again will not please him one bit!!

raspberryrippleicecream · 08/02/2017 23:48

DS1's uni health centre has a branch in the city, so he'll be fine next year. It's a very compact, small city with the uni on the edge. I suppose unis like Warwick have students living in a much wider area. Although now that house calls, and night calls are a thing of the past I can't see it matters.

LIZS · 09/02/2017 14:26

The uni one apparently covers students living in the local area so I think he will register there. However he now has abs to take and is awaiting a hospital referral at home so will try to wait until that is resolved first. Went back this morning feeling a bit sorry for himself.

homebythesea · 10/02/2017 18:13

Celebrating here- DS has (finally) sorted out his housing for next year. 5 of them in a house with 3 bathrooms (quite luxurious by my own student standards!!!) and the major benefit of being much cheaper than halls at £80 a week. He seems to be turning a new leaf having not been out drinking at all this week - instead done some exercise, been to a talk by Liberty on people trafficking (!) and the cinema. He had a bad drinking experience a week or so ago which may have finally taught him a lesson (sigh). You do wish they could just get to the point of realisation before they go through the negatives that lead them there....

Leeds2 · 10/02/2017 18:57

Glad your DS has got his house sorted, home - it does indeed sound quite luxurious! He also seems to have had a "sensible" week - long may it continue! I would love to have gone to the Liberty talk; I look back on my uni days and there were so many talks/events that I just couldn't be bothered to go to. How I wish I had that opportunity now!

I am not sure what is happening with my DD's accommodation for next year. She will be living on campus, I believe, but hoping to be in a house for 8. She has tried, several times, to explain the ballot process to me but I just don't get it. It seems that you can fail to get a house for 8, be put in a house for 6 and nobody seems to know who the two spare students will be and where they will go! No doubt all will become as clear as mud shortly!

EllenJanethickerknickers · 12/02/2017 15:33

Hello all. Haven't been on the thread for ages because there hasn't been much to say. DS1 is still happily pottering along at Warwick. Workload is heavier this term so less partying and more late nights working on assignments. DS2, 3 and I are visiting on Wednesday as it's half term here.

He's enjoying the Marxist Society which has come as a surprise to me, he never seemed particularly interested in politics before. It seems like a reasonably typical student thing to do, so good for him!

Hadn't thought about GP registration for next year, will add it to my list of things to remind him about, thanks. Smile

Northernlurker · 12/02/2017 15:39

Dd is home this weekend. She's coming next weekend for a few days as they have a week's holiday then but rang up last week to say she wanted to come home this weekend too. The house thing for next year is proving quite stressful and she's coping with it but just wanted to get away for a bit. Turns out nearly everyone on her floor was going home too! I am very full, having made all of her favourites for tea last night and lunch today.

GasLightShining · 14/02/2017 13:06

DS signing contract tomorrow for house share with 4 others. One lad has pulled out but they have found a replacement. He will be paying £75 excluding bills. Pictures on Rightmove looked nice

We are going down in a coupe of weeks.

The good news is that he has learnt how to work the washing machines!!!

raspberryrippleicecream · 18/02/2017 23:11

I've seen quite a bit of DS1 this term, he came home for his birthday a couple of weeks ago, then last week we were driving past to take DS2 to a music residential and picked him up to take him with us. I came back with his washing as he pointed out it could be dropped off to him when we picked up DS2 a couple of days later.

Then today he was playing at the uni brass competition, which was live streamed, so we got to watch. Was brilliant.

He's waiting for his mentor appointment, when they tell him how he got in in the exams.

LIZS · 23/02/2017 10:06

Ds has been home more frequently this term for orthodontic and podiatry appointments which has been nice. He has just signed the lease for next year. Seems to lurch from one cold/cough to the next and I suspect late nights aren't helping!

marymoocow · 27/02/2017 20:23

Second batch of assignments in for DS. They seemed to be a bit less stressful this time, so fingers crossed. His uni had an open day on Saturday, so took DD to look round. Scary to think we are embarking on the rollercoaster again!

LIZS · 27/02/2017 21:18

Ds also feeling the pressure more. 4 assignments due before end of March and he's away for last week of term on a course-related trip. He's also got to have a foot op at some point.

Leeds2 · 27/02/2017 21:54

DD comes home this Saturday for a week. Can't wait!

Doesn't get any time off at Easter.

granarybeck · 27/02/2017 23:00

Haven't been on here for ages, but nice to check in and see how everyone's dcs are doing. My Dd is seeming quite settled at Warwick. Although everytime she gets better health wise she seems to get really ill again with v swollen glands etc. She's taking Vit C and zinc, having time off from going out, not sure what else to suggest. Ds seems to now have made much better/more like minded group friends at bath spa after a slower start. It's been strange that whilst it's been lovely that they've both popped home for a night each since Xmas, they've brought a uni friend which has been lovely to meet them but strange not being able to just catch up with them on their own.

I've found this term a bit easier to get used to having an empty house. But have to admit that everytime I think I'm used to it, I'll have a dip of it feeling really strange not having children at home to feel like my main purpose. Hopefully it will keep getting better!

DaphneDeLaFontaine · 27/02/2017 23:05

DS is happy. His rent after summer is £125 plus bills though.

I'm telling younger DCs to head north!

raspberryrippleicecream · 28/02/2017 18:44

Daphne absolutely do that. DS1 will be paying a lot less than that including bills, TV licence and WiFi.

He got his results of his first exams today and is very happySmile

Leeds2 · 28/02/2017 18:52

Pleased to hear it raspberry!

Squirrills · 15/03/2017 08:55

How's it going for all our DC?
DS finishes for Easter on Friday as does DS1 so we will have a house full again for a little while. He seems to have conquered all the bugs for now and has been really enjoying himself.

hellsbells99 · 15/03/2017 09:36

It will be nice but noisy to have them home Squirrills!
DD1 doesn't finish until the end of the month and then is going away on a uni trip so she will only be home for 2 weeks at Easter - but she is coming home Thursday night until Saturday as she needs to pick up stuff for her trip. DD2 finishes the 24th but she is also going away so not home until the beginning of April. Both have done well in exams and course work so this year I am now able to relax a little!
