DS1 has graduated with a First. Yay. It doesn't seem any time since they were all finishing A levels. Still the possibility of a ceremony in December, but uni is organising a virtual ceremony in July.

DS said there was a flurry of last minute PhD applications as jobs offers were withdrawn.

Hope everyone on here is ok.

Squirrills · 05/07/2020 17:09

@raspberryrippleicecream Well done to your DS.
I don't venture on HE much now as both DS have finished but this thread caught my eye.
DS2 graduated last summer and was planning a "gap" year consisting of six months working locally while looking for a grad job and six months travel. He hoped to start a grad scheme / career in September.
Well the travel got knocked on the head but he did get a decent tech grad scheme which was due to start in the spring. He was incredibly lucky that it started in May during lockdown as so many schemes were either cancelled or postponed.

Best of luck to all those graduating this year with or without ceremonies.

Great news, @raspberryrippleicecream, well done your DS! Is he staying on to do a PhD?

@Squirrills, that was a piece of luck for your DS. Good to hear some positive news.

DS1 has been working from home since mid March. Very lucky he got his job last year in Manchester. His company aren’t recruiting any graduates this year. Sad He is here right now, came home for a week to bubble with us as he’s been on his own since March. It’s been lovely having him! He’s going back tomorrow though.

DS3 has applied to Manchester uni so cross fingers he gets his place, and I’ll have 2 reasons to visit. Smile

Lovely to catch up with people here.
raspberryrippleicecream well done to your DS!
Squirrills glad to hear your DS has started his grad scheme. He has been lucky.
MillicentMartha glad you have your DS home for the week. And good luck to DS3.
My DD1 graduated last year and started a grad scheme in January. But she is currently back home as she was initially furloughed but is now working from home. DD2 got her results today and has a first class masters degree so is very happy. Fingers crossed she is still starting her grad scheme in September.

MillicentMartha · 06/07/2020 23:42

Lovely news, hellsbells! Two reasons to be proud.

raspberryrippleicecream · 07/07/2020 00:14

Lovely news all round!! Well done all our DC!

Millicent Martha yes, he is staying on for his PhD, which will probably be mostly working from home to begin with. Good luck to your DS3.

My DS2 is spending hours doing virtual open days for 2021.

MillicentMartha · 07/07/2020 14:47

At least you’ve been through it before, raspberryripple. Tricky situation for Y12 students, though. Easier in some ways for my Y13.

raspberryrippleicecream · 07/07/2020 22:25

True Millicent Martha. And I've also been through clearing with DD where she ended up at a uni she'd never visited, and is perfectly fine and happy.

Squirrills · 08/07/2020 14:56

Millicent I bet that was a treat having your DS home for a few months.
hellsbells99 Sounds like your DD1was lucky to get her grad scheme in time. Is she staying with you as long as she WFH? Well done to your DD2.
DS is in the peculiar position of starting a new job during lockdown working from home, although he has moved to the city where he is based. The employer has been brilliant and very helpful. He's had the occasional day in the office but without a doubt it would have been easier to get to know the work and colleagues if he had had a period in work before lockdown.

hellsbells99 · 08/07/2020 22:51

Thanks MillicentMartha and Squirrills
Yes DD1 is currently staying with us and has just officially moved out of her house share ....saving her £500 a month. It looks like they won’t be back in their office or on client sites for several months. She is finding work hard as a trainee as it is difficult working on your own at home and not being able to constantly ask questions when you are learning. She is fortunate that she at least met people during the first couple of months and they do have regular ‘coffee catchup’ zoom meetings. It must be difficult for your DS Squirrills to start a new job during lockdown.

MillicentMartha · 08/07/2020 23:12

DS is similar. Started his job in September and has been working from home (flat in Manchester) since mid March. A bit isolating for him, but at least he had 6 normal months first.
