Seems that my DD has done all she can for now, except for work exp diaries, questionnaires, bmat and the rest. Is is Christmas yet?

OP posts:
Leeds2 · 08/12/2015 16:42

I think Bristol have invited my DD to an offer holder day in February. Certainly one of her choices has, and was made after an email offer. I think they just all work at their own pace!

Leeds2 · 08/12/2015 19:27

DD just got an offer from Durham!

homebythesea · 08/12/2015 19:54

eatyourveg according to my DS you can apply for accommodation as an offer holder (disclaimer- I have not independently verified this!) so waiting for the last one to trickle in shouldn't prevent anyone from getting this admin done, or going to offer holder days at any other places. You can't firm/insurance until all offers are in or if you reject any that haven't been made yet so no rush.....waiting for Exeter here too 😄

homebythesea · 08/12/2015 19:55

talkinpeace offer holder day invites will follow as well as a million pleading emails from various establishments with apparently limitless PR budgets

TalkinPeace · 09/12/2015 08:27
Grin Oh we are getting those already because she's not accepted any of her four offers ...... Dropped off at the station this morning and she spotted other friends getting the earlier trains to other Unis today - cue mild waving and then texting
Needmoresleep · 09/12/2015 08:47

Dunlurking, I don't remember DS being invited to offer holder days two years ago. But then he only got two offers and one was very late. He would have had at most a week to see and decide. I guess by then you probably know whether you want the offer or not, and if you were unsure you could always phone and ask to look around and meet people. With the internet there is a lot more research you can do on line than we ever could.

Dunlurking · 09/12/2015 13:32

Ds now holds 3 offers, yay! Needmore he is being very vague about offer holder days, but has been given some dates and so far hasn't told me when they are. As his new first choice was originally his 4th after the open days I am very anxious that he revisit. I think a girl who has been a friend for years has also applied there (but she hasn't heard yet). Any suggestions how to handle this? All i know is that this (really nice) girl is trying to break up from a long term boyfriend, and the change in uni preference seems an unlikely coincidence!

No news from Exeter or Bristol still.

SecretSquirr3ls · 09/12/2015 15:49

As I recall from DS1 the offer holder days were all well into spring. Possibly because the application deadline is not until January.
DS only went to one (Durham) which was an overnight stay in the college to which he was allocated (which was not the one he applied for). Anyone who has offers from Durham should know that the college isn't allocated when the offer is made, it's much later.

TalkinPeace I'll be interested to hear what your DD thinks of York. DS has applied there, I think for a similar subject. When he went on the open day (a glorious sunny day in September), he didn't like the campus much. The course and Department though were fantastic, so he put it as one of his five.
His application is still pending at college so I doubt he'll be hearing from any unis before Christmas.

Also I'm pretty sure they cannot accept offers until all five are in, unless they withdraw their application from the fifth. There is no rush and it's a good idea to wait until April before making that final decision.

TalkinPeace · 09/12/2015 16:13

Secret
She just texted me about something different and she said its AMAZING (and then a row of smileys Grin )

SecretSquirr3ls · 09/12/2015 16:53

They can convey a lot in a text Grin.
We were blown away by the facilities and the staff. DS had been on a taster day months earlier and the lecturer was in the meet and greet so he went over for a chat. They have invested squillions in the life sciences, impressive state of the art equipment and it's expanding even more by next year.
Having said all that the campus is an odd layout, in a line rather than a circle IYSWIM. No heart to it.
There were the regulation campus geese.
I know a couple of DS1's old school friends who are there and very happy.

TalkinPeace · 09/12/2015 16:56

text from her just now
"Got off the bus early so I could walk through the city. Its basically a big Winchester she's at college in Winchester so nice and the department facilities are just fab"

Exeter might just have found themselves in second place

hattymattie · 09/12/2015 19:54

Talking Peace - I missed what your DD was applying for. My DD is waiting to hear from Exeter and York for Biological Science. She hasn't been to York Campus yet although she has visited York on holiday some years ago.

dottygamekeeper · 09/12/2015 21:34

My DD has an interview at York in Jan for Physics - it is her 1st choice at the moment, so am glad to hear positive things about it. She did go last year for a Chemistry taster day, but changed her mind re subjects over the summer, so hasn't seen the Physics dept yet, nor any of the accommodation. I haven't been to York for 30 years, but it sounds as if it is a lovely city...

TalkinPeace · 09/12/2015 22:01

hatty
It was the biology day. She has come back RAVING about how wonderful the department was.
She loved the whole shebang
and it only took her 4 hours to get home on the train

raspberryrippleicecream · 09/12/2015 22:39

*dotty" DS had a Physics interview at York a few weeks ago. And I went with him on the sunny open day in Sept and looked at every type of accommodation. He has all his offers now, York is his insurance but would be very happy to go there.

SecretSquirr3ls · 10/12/2015 09:59

York is a lovely city though I still hate the campus. DS thought I wanted him to look there because it's close to home. Only when we had seen the Department did he realise why it's so highly rated for Biology. Selfish me would be thrilled if DS chose it as it's so much nearer to us than where DS1 is. It's not in his top two at the moment though.

TalkinPeace · 10/12/2015 17:15

DD thought the York campus was gorgeous - but she does like ducks Smile
It was the Bath one that left her cold ....

dottygamekeeper · 10/12/2015 17:39

Interesting , TalkinPeace, DD already has an offer from Bath but it is the only uni on her list that we haven't visited yet. She says she will wait to see what York offer, and then decide whether she needs to visit Bath, or strike it off the list..

I love Bath as a city, but have never visited the uni campus.

Leeds2 · 10/12/2015 18:18

Bath is the only open day I have been to with DD, so nothing to compare with, but I quite liked it.

hattymattie · 10/12/2015 20:18

Secrets - good to know your DD loved York. It's a shame my DD was later in her application, so missed the open day, mind you we're in France so the logistics are complicated. We have radio silence from 4 universities after the early KCL offer. It would be lovely if DD could bag at least one other offer before Christmas.

homebythesea · 10/12/2015 23:11

Uh oh

Final offer in tonight

It's decision time.......,,

Offer from "best" Uni (I know that's subjective/depends on subject etc!) is AAA. DS isn't confident he will get that although teachers have all said he is capable and AS results mean he only has to get a B in 2 of his subjects at A2 to get an A overall. The third subject is the potential banana skin. He would prefer to take AAB offer at a "less good" place (disclaimer as above applies!) but is concerned he might regret it if he does actually get the 3 A's

Aaarrggghhhh

Decorhate · 11/12/2015 06:10

What's the issue? Firm the AAA & insure the AAB? Lots get in to their firm with dropped grades anyway. Just choose an insurance where accommodation is guaranteed

Is anyone else still waiting for Birmingham?
Dd has offers from UEA, Reading, Lancaster but is still waiting for Birmingham

MyVisionsComeFromSoup · 11/12/2015 07:37

DD2's waiting for Birmingham, but it's a v specialised course, and they told her they wanted to see all the applications first before making a decision.
