How painful is it having the coil fitted (on a scale of 1-10 :)

Despite having two kids I am a complete laaaady when it comes to anything remotely gynecological. Saw my GP today and the coil really does seem the best option for me, the thought of it just completely freaks me out!

No worse than a smear IME.

OldLadyKnowsNothing · 08/04/2009 19:16

Assuming 1 is "not much bother at all" and 10 is "screaming in agony", it's about 0.5.

rumdontbotherreplyingmum · 08/04/2009 19:17

I was prepared for it to be really painful and had a couple of paracetomals about an hour before.. I did say ouch a couple of times, but it was no where near as bad as I thought it was going to be...
mind you having said that I had to have it checked last week and found it really painful! go figure

TheCrackFox · 08/04/2009 19:24

Bikini wax level of pain. Over and done with very quickly.

samsonthecat · 08/04/2009 19:27

Not too bad may be 2/3. I did say ouch quite a few times but it is only slightly worse than a smear. Felt a bit uncomfortable after for about 48 hours.

glamourbadger · 08/04/2009 19:49

Thank you everyone - you've all cheered me up no end! I once had a Brazilian wax and almost walked out with only half done, was on a par with childbirth

hi, this is the same reason i wont get the coil fitted [hate pain especially down there, despite having 3 casareans !!!!!!!!!!]
i have heard a lot of stories from a lot of people regarding the coil, they range from no pain at all to slight pain for a few seconds !
a lot of people say its not a pain , just a feeling of being uncomfortable for a few seconds with a slight cramp in ur stomach.
hope it goes well if u decide on having it fitted

Take an ibuprofen before you go. For me it was slightly worse than a smear, but only because it takes longer. Well worth it though for easy contraception once it's in.

shootfromthehip · 19/04/2009 08:49

Insertion- 1/10
Embarrassment- 5/10 despite 2 babies LOL
Cramping afterwards- 4/10

Would I recommend- 10/10 (mirena for me)

saramoon · 19/04/2009 10:26

Seeing as you have had 2 children, it will be about a 1.

missingtheaction · 19/04/2009 10:30

1-3 for about 2 seconds.

LynetteScavo · 19/04/2009 10:33

I didn't take any painkillers, adn it was only about 0.5. I'm glad I had the afternoon off, as I felt a bit wobbly afterwards.

cktwo · 19/04/2009 16:04

I've had 2 children and it was a 9. I went into shock and had terrible cramps afterwards for 30 mons. DH was so scared he called the GP back as soon as he got me home.

moaningminnie2020 · 19/04/2009 17:37

I've had 2 DC's, both CS though. Had mirena about 10 days ago, I'm a big wuss and would say 2/10 for pain. 8/10 for embarassment because I'm rubbish, few mins lying about with speculum in waiting for local anaesthetic gel to have a chance to work. Had a couple of doses nurofen later on as bit achy/period painy feeling.

Still having light bleeding though which is irritating as still BF and hadn't got periods back yet. Looking forward to no fuss contraception and binning the condoms

dizietsma · 19/04/2009 17:40

1 vaginal birth.

I say it was a 4/10 for insertion. Nips a bit.

3/10 mild period like cramps afterwards.

Really not a big deal.

TitsalinaBumsquash · 19/04/2009 17:43

Im am considering a coil, im terrified after some horrible experiences with all other hormonal contraceptives i have tried! Sill sitting on the fence.

suwoo · 19/04/2009 17:43

I am very brave and have IMO a high pain threshold, but have found the pain level different after each insertion (have had 3).

I have 6 monthly smears and also visit the gynae every 6 months, so get my fanny out every 3 months , therefore the embarrasment factor was 0.

The pain on average across the 3 insertions would be a 4 (but only for 30 seconds or so.

jellybeans · 19/04/2009 17:46

It's not that bad at all, just weird.

CompareTheMeerkat · 19/04/2009 17:49

Mine hurt a lot tbh. Didn't help that they got so far and then it had to be started again so pain was for about 5 minutes.

Pain on insertion about 5

Got really wobbly afterwards - had to stop the car as felt really faint.

Cramps for about a day, but about 2 on pain threshold.

Wasn't embarrassed at all tbh.

I really like it - no bleeding and feel happy knowing contraception is sorted out for the next 4.5 years now.

I had 2 DCs and natural births, no pain killers, gas, nothing.

I had a coil fitted years later - Dr asked me if I had had a C section with my DCs as my cervix was tightly closed when he tried to fit the coil!

For m, the pain was around 9 on a scale of 1-10.

sorry

ridingjoker · 19/04/2009 20:52

0.5

easy peasy lemon squeezy. but at my clinic its one specific person that does them all as they are best and have reputation of being pain free.

I think the sooner you have it done after childbirth the easier it is- mine was fitted when i was about 45 and my DCs were almost teenagers then.
