How painful is it having the coil fitted (on a scale of 1-10 :)

Despite having two kids I am a complete laaaady when it comes to anything remotely gynecological. Saw my GP today and the coil really does seem the best option for me, the thought of it just completely freaks me out!

am i have the lowest pain threshhold a human being can have - i promise you

there is soreness afterwards the first time iirc but not pain

Chaotica · 20/04/2009 14:20

No pain afterwards either.

But I'm not impressed at all with the hormones in the Mirena (off to get mine out again).

grouchyoscar · 20/04/2009 14:27

1-2 at the worst. It's more undignified than painful. Take a couple of ibuprofen tabs 1/2 hr before the fitting appointment

Thanks, just reminds me that I have to change my checking appointment

leothelioness · 20/04/2009 14:32

more embarassing than painful. uncomfortable but after childbirth its a breeze

ellexsisejess · 05/04/2013 17:19

i agree with most people, i had the copper coil fitted yesterday (copper because no hormones involved and so no weight gain either) but yes undignified/ uncomfortable oooh yes (I'm such a prude) but painful, meh,not really. You hear these horror stories but that's all they are. I had mine fitted at a clinic and the whole thing from a general check,sti/std test and fitting took literally 3 minutes and only set off mild cramps. I can have horrible cramps ware I faint and it didn't set them off any ware near as bad as i normally get them. I did take some paracetamol before i went but this was because i had wisdom tooth pain (which has caused my more pain then the coil did!) and i had mine fitted with no anesthetic or numbing gel or anything and no lie,it took 3 minutes and will last 10 years! 10 years worry free is worth 3 minutes of uncomfortable slight pinching feeling. Hey I just told myself having a baby is going to hurt more then having a coil fitted so I just sat there and let the doctor get on with it. Scale of 1-10, 3 if that,in fact 2 , getting nail polish remover in a cut hurts more or the wisdom tooth pain I've had for 3 days which has kept me up has caused me more pain! Best decision ever made but you have to do whats best for you. But I'm glad I didn't listen to the horror stories .

I had a c-section so my cervix was very tight. The pain made me punch the wall! but it was short and sharp! bit wobbly afterwards and incident free 3years on.

However I did have to collect it myself first from Morrisons pharmacy and the box was about 3ft long!

Madsometimes · 05/04/2013 18:11

1-2, and I'm a wuss. The most embarrassing part was the doctor's insistence that it be fitted during my period. Thankfully it wasn't on a heavy day.

What helped was that my GP surgery is large, about 8 GP's. Only 2 fit coils, and the one that did mine has fitted hundreds of them, so she knew what she was doing and was quick. No numbing cream was needed.

missymarmite · 05/04/2013 19:28

The last time I had a mirena coil fitted is was very painful and took over 45 minutes and several attempts so the pain was prolonged and it was a really horrible experience. I had no problems post insertion though. Pain was probably about a 5- the problem for me was the length if time it took. I was also very faint and giddy afterwards and it felt like a really severe period pain for a couple of days. It was far worse than a recent colposcopy I had where they did a biopsy and cut out bits of my cervix, and I would say that for me at least I'd rather repeat the LLETZ procedure I had consequently ( where they cut away bits of bad cells in the cervix) than repeat the last coil fitting experience! It's a real shame because as I said, once it was in it was great. Unfortunately they had to remove it during the LLETZ so now I am stuck for contraceptive!!!!!

Ells1984 · 13/08/2014 21:35

I've read all these responses and had a coil fitted today. I have had many colposcopys, a punch biopsy and LOOP (lazor burnt a few bad cells) under local anaesthetic and I can honestly say this was the most painful thing I've had done. It was fine until she used the forcep thing to pull my
Cervix which nearly made me fall off the bed. Then when she actually inserted it was really painful. On a scale of 1 to 10 def a 7. It only lasted for 8 seconds but really not nice. Since then I have had the worse cramps ever. I fainted about 20 minutes after having it done. I'm still (5 hours later) in a great deal of pain even though I've taken a lot of pain killers. I appreciate that the majority are fine but I wish I hadn't had it done. Nothing is worth this misery. If I'm not more comfortable tomorrow I'm going to have it removed.

Ells1984 · 13/08/2014 21:40

And for the lady that said "don't listen to the horror stories, as that is all they are!" Can go do one. If she had felt a 10th of the pain I've been in today she might understand that it's not all good for everyone. Do not undertake this decision lightly

Edenviolet · 13/08/2014 21:41

Dsis insists on GA for insertion and removal so it must be uncomfortable. I don't have one myself so can't say for definite. sIL said hers was quite painful and cramps afterwards.

DontstepontheMomeRaths · 13/08/2014 21:52

My first coil pre kids was painful but having another fitted 6 weeks after DS I felt nothing! Third coil was fitted when I had scarring on my cervix from biopsys and hurt again. As you can see I've used them for years.

Pain wise I could live with it first time round, it smarted but was bearable. Third time with scarring I wouldn't repeat again. I think it was too hard opening my cervix to insert it that time.

Not helpful really am I???

mrsbucketxx · 13/08/2014 21:56

Pain on insertion 1

pain everyday there after about a 6-9 culminating in a lovely pelvic infection.

I woukd never have another or recommend one either.

ThatBloodyWoman · 13/08/2014 21:59

Then I nearly fainted.
And they still didn't manage to do it.

Queenofknickers · 13/08/2014 22:06

I had to have a GA as my cervix points backwards and have history of cervical shock. Afterwards had hideous cramping and was nearly taken back to theatre for removal/expulsion. And I've had 2 vag births so go figure. I think my experience was highly unusual - loads of my friends say it didn't hurt at all.

wasacasa · 13/08/2014 22:08

0.5 during insertion and afterwards. Lovely staff and result of coil 10 out of 10 in a good way!

Framboisier · 13/08/2014 22:20

I'd say 7 - and then they couldn't even fit the bloody thing because apparently I have a wonky cervix :-/

So now I have the jab

Insertion wasn't too bad, just a bit worse than a smear. I wasn't really prepared for feeling so terrible afterwards though as I hadn't read anything about them. I vomited and nearly fainted and the cramps were pretty bad.

I did both childbirths with just gas and air so not a woos (sp?) about things.

cavalier · 30/12/2014 13:53

Please please just try the Mirena if periods are awful ....takes a little settling in but for me I perservered and it has been a God send .....every single one of us is different ....I would have had to have a hysterectomy if not for the mirena coil and wish Mes nan sister and dear Mum could have benefitted from one ......it's worth a go .....

Jellyrollgumdrop · 02/01/2015 02:20

For me having mirena was really quite painful, cramps for a couple of hours even after taking pain relief oh and had gas & air to have fitted! Not being dramatic but my labour pains wernt as bad as the cramping I had!

ovaltine · 02/01/2015 02:24

Sod the pain having it put in; having it taken out was the worst!! Ended up having anaesthetic injected into my cervix. The nurse offered to hold my hand as she knew.....
