How painful is it having the coil fitted (on a scale of 1-10 :)

Despite having two kids I am a complete laaaady when it comes to anything remotely gynecological. Saw my GP today and the coil really does seem the best option for me, the thought of it just completely freaks me out!

OMG, I feel a real winp reading this! I am on my third coil and the first was a 6 going in (I cried), that had to be removed and I'd say that was a 9 (the string went totally missing and they had to go in with the grabbing device). The second being fitted was an 8 and so was the third. Removal is worse, but fitting is still very painful and unpleasant-I bled for days with this one and the cramps were horrible. I had a smear recently and that was a 0 on the scale-didn't even register.

I haven't had vaginal deliveries-that might account for the pain?

2/10 for me
Much less painful (and quicker and lasts longer) than a bikini wax Grin

Had three, I'm nails...but it still hurt like hell each time. Easily a 6. Pinchy, period like pains afterwards but I couldn't even work without mine!

Sorry to say it but my first 2 attempts were awful. Apparently I have a difficult cervix!
However, then went to a gynaecologist to have it done. Smear, coli, and endometrial biopsy all done in 5 minutes and I barely blinked. So the skill of the operator must be a key factor.

Has anyone else had problems with mirena??

traymd63 · 06/08/2015 02:09

I found it very painful and I'm good with pain, I also had a seizure? Don't think that's normal though? Everyone is different though.

Insertion was fine - no more painful than a smear. But I suffered badly with cramps for about 3 days afterwards. Spent the first afternoon in bed, really wasnt expecting it to be so unconfortable. Took about 2 weeks to settle.

Maybe 2 when done by GP, the coil man ( as the hca at the sexual health clinic called him) no pain at all. 0n my 3rd mirena, for me the best invention ever.

0.5 - couldn't even call it pain

Hi,

After getting the coil fitted today, I thought I'd just write a little something in case anyone is still looking at this thread more recently.

I'm 19 and I have no children (I read online it could be more painful if you haven't had a child due to your cervix being smaller.) I was incredibly nervous and had read many HORROR stories online about how horrific the whole ordeal was. I have realised it is totally personal and no two people are the same. I was advised to take some tablets half an hour beforehand - ibuprofen and paracetamol - but I don't believe it made a great amount of difference.

I have a low pain threshold so I was prepared (and prepared the Doctor and Nurse) for the worst. I asked for aesthetic, however, my clinic did not use it, but it was worth asking for. I got down to business, you know, undressed and lay upon the table, scooted to the edge.

The Doctor inserted the clamp (which I have had before, however, this time it was A LOT more comfortable and not as 'open' as previous times I believe), and told me to count down from 3 and cough. I did so and felt the most intense period pain you can imagine for about 5 seconds. I was told to take deep breathes and I asked if she was done. She was not. She explained she was just measuring my cervix.

At this point, I was worried sick about what was going to happen when it was inserted. She explained that it would be the same amount of pain but for about twenty seconds. She was correct. A small hand grip from the nurse and a gritting of my teeth it was done. The doctor told me to remain lying down and sat me up gradually to ensure I wasn't feeling dizzy or sick. I wasn't and I wasn't in any sort of pain. The doctor explained that sometimes it may take 15/20 minutes for cramps and bleeding to set in. I got dressed and went on my way.

Sure enough, on the journey home, a small amount of bleeding started (very small, just enough to justify using a pad), however, no cramps. I rushed home and prepared myself for what I was about to endure. The cramps started maybe 25 minutes after my coil was inserted but they were just typical period pains, nothing incredibly painful, just annoying. Going to the toilet for a number two is a little
painful but nothing crazy.

I highly recommend the procedure and after having it done ten hours ago, I really can't complain about the amount of pain endured taking into consideration that you're covered for 5 years.

Short pain for long term gain!

Just had it done this morning! Was fine. Very much like a smear test, but I did feel a slight stinging and odd tugging inside for a few seconds. That hurt a tiny bit but immediately passed. I went straight to work. On painkillers and having vague period pain feelings .. but that's it so far.

(I have had 2 babies, so that may be why it wasn't such an issue).
