Bone Marrow Donation Sign-up Thread. For Mr Lisad!!!!! Please keep bumped!!!!

For those who have seen the thread today. Mr Lisad123 (who is also Misdee's bil) has been diagnosed with chronic leukaemia.

I think we need another MN donation mission. Is everyone on the bone marrow donation register? I know we all signed up for the organ donor register when Misdee's Peter was needing a transplant, but the bone marrow donation register is separate.

My DH donated his bone marrow last month to a lady in the UK with chronic leukamia and she is doing well.

I hope everyone will join and make sure they get their blood tissue-typed to see if they are a match. All people between 18-40 years old are considered. Young men in this age group are especially useful due to a high concentration of stem cells in the bone marrow.

Details on:-

Anthony Nolan Trust

or for those in Wales:-

Welsh Blood Service

Please sign up and please keep this thread bumped because I'm away from PC all evening today.

noonki · 12/03/2009 22:04

Not sure but I know it makes a difference for eastern europeans. So possibly.

Elibean · 12/03/2009 22:15

I can't, had hepatitis ten years ago. But, bump.

jofeb04 · 12/03/2009 22:31

Have bookmarked the website as I can't donate at present (had piercings and tattoos very recently).

Thinking of you Lisad123 and all your family.

rempy · 12/03/2009 22:38

Am on register, but on hold at present (baby under one). I have a note in my in-tray telling me to let them know in August.

Don't wish to side track people, but it is very likely that MrLisad123 will need blood or blood products during treatment.

So get down the blood donors too MN-ers.

Bumping on.

Morningpaper - here is the link to my earlier thread a couple of weeks ago about DH's bone marrow donation last month.

bone marrow

He really is fine now - he said it was easier than his vasectomy 2 years ago, despite the General Anaesthetic. He's playing hockey again now so all going well.

It's worth mentioning again that they now have a new way of harvesting the stem cells they need for bone marrow donation, by using dialysis - so it is possible to do it straight from the blood, rather than from the bones under a GA. DH couldn't give this way because his veins weren't quite good enough in his arms and it takes a few hours to do this way so you need good strong veins in both arms. He found the whole process fine though and he said (for those of you trying to tempt your DH's to donate) that he got treated like a hero by everyone. He said he got more flirtatious hero comments and attention from people for doing it than he does when he takes the kids to the park -

It doesn't mention it on there.

I once emailed the national blood service about it and they said they weren't sure if it stopped me from donating or not.

Not sure how I can find out.

I have a little card which says that I have antibodies in my blood which may be of clinical importance but other than that I have no idea.
