Bone Marrow Donation Sign-up Thread. For Mr Lisad!!!!! Please keep bumped!!!!

For those who have seen the thread today. Mr Lisad123 (who is also Misdee's bil) has been diagnosed with chronic leukaemia.

I think we need another MN donation mission. Is everyone on the bone marrow donation register? I know we all signed up for the organ donor register when Misdee's Peter was needing a transplant, but the bone marrow donation register is separate.

My DH donated his bone marrow last month to a lady in the UK with chronic leukamia and she is doing well.

I hope everyone will join and make sure they get their blood tissue-typed to see if they are a match. All people between 18-40 years old are considered. Young men in this age group are especially useful due to a high concentration of stem cells in the bone marrow.

Details on:-

Anthony Nolan Trust

or for those in Wales:-

Welsh Blood Service

Please sign up and please keep this thread bumped because I'm away from PC all evening today.

Jeez - I'm too old! Can't believe that, I'm only 41. Have I read that correctly do you really need to be between 18-40 to donate?

Positive thoughts to Lisad's dh.

GColdtimer · 12/03/2009 16:52

there are two ways wannabe from what I remember when I joined up, one of which doesn't require a GA.

GColdtimer · 12/03/2009 16:53

no, you just need to be under 40 to register. i think it is because it costs quite a lot of money to recruit donors and so they want their money's worth, which is why they put an age limit on registration.

lou031205 · 12/03/2009 16:58

I am so sorry I can't donate. I am on the register as far as I know (I wiggled the scales a bit to reach the threshold!) but I am pregnant so that counts me out. I hope you get a donor really soon.

SparklyGothKat · 12/03/2009 17:01

could Darren's half brother be a match? I am not sure how these thing work, but Darren only has a half brother, not a full sibling

SparklyGothKat · 12/03/2009 17:41

bump

MissAnthrope · 12/03/2009 17:43

I can't donate as fail the medical criteria.

Bumping for others.

MamaG · 12/03/2009 17:44

I can't as BabyG is too young. Does having a transfusion stop you, for future reference?

So sorry to hear this lisad

rubyslippers · 12/03/2009 17:44

i cannot donate due to past medical history but another bump

SparklyGothKat · 12/03/2009 18:34

DanJARMouse · 12/03/2009 18:38

StrawberryWhore · 12/03/2009 20:09

Already on register.

Bump.

coolkat · 12/03/2009 20:11

I can not donate as dd only 19 weeks.

DH is on the register already.

I once did a sponsered absail for the Anthony Nolan trust, a vital charity.

Bumping for you.

IwishIwasmoreorganised · 12/03/2009 20:15

I've been registered with the Welsh Blood Service for years - I assume Anthony Nolan check this register too?

Hope a match is found quickly.

xx

Northernlurker · 12/03/2009 20:20

The list of things that mean you can't donate is huge isn't it? I can't - BMI too high and when they are adults neither dd1 or dd2 will be able to either because of already existing medical conditions.

GColdtimer · 12/03/2009 20:23

I think that is why they struggle to recruit donors to be honest NorthernLurker. Out of 4 of us who tried to register, I was the only one who could.

noonki · 12/03/2009 20:36

Also they are very short of people from non-white british (as there are loads of different types of marrow and the match is related to your ethnicity)

BocciBalls · 12/03/2009 20:47

the register won't accept me because of medical condition, but have made a £ donation. hope there is a match for your dh.

FAQinglovely · 12/03/2009 20:49

I can't as I'm not heavy enough plus some of the medical stuff too.

But I will try and persuade DH to register he's black African so I should imagine a "rarer" one. Looking at the list he should be able to.
