Couch potato to 5k - anyone fancy starting?

This is what I'm talking about

And there are podcasts for your mp3 player to help.

Anyone feel like a bit of mutual motivation?

yes I fancy it, there was a HUGE thread on this wasn't there? I felt too intimidated to join though. I'll happily do this one, don't know where i'll find the time though

funnypeculiar · 07/09/2008 09:37

I'm up for it (although I'll have to nick dh's mp3 and figure out downloads ) - have been meaning to for a while, but like kitty, the current thread looked too established by the time i got to it

ZZMum · 07/09/2008 09:43

put me down for it!! Have been wanting to do this for ages... have an ipod as well so lets get going -- at the moment, I can run a bath and about 50 yards....

andiem · 07/09/2008 09:56

I am really keen to start too have said to dh I am going to start running he just went

Furball · 07/09/2008 10:01

one important thing though is make sure you have proper running shoes. if possible go to a proper running shop not just a high street sports shop. They will take the time to make sure you have the best shoes for your feet and running style so you don't do more damage than good whilst running.

giddykipper · 07/09/2008 10:29

Cool! People have replied :-)

That's exactly what I thought funnypeculiar, they all seem to be able to run on that thread now.

I think I might start tonight, unless it's raining of course, I can't run in the rain . And I'll have to wait until it's dark, I don't want people looking at me.

OP posts:
andiem · 07/09/2008 10:49

right have printed off schedule and hope to start tonight as well weather permitting{grin]

EyeballsintheSky · 07/09/2008 10:58

I'd love to do it as my 3.5yo cousin commented on my big fat arms just now! Am seriously worried about attempting to move faster than slug pace in public. If I go faster I'd have to sit on a bench for a minute to wait for my arse to catch up with me.

So far then we have:

Are we starting tonight?

OP posts:
kittywise · 07/09/2008 15:09

I might try tonight, time and weather permitting. I wish there was a device that I could program to beep to let me know when to start running and when to walk. I find it a real pain having to look at my watch

giddykipper · 07/09/2008 15:13

Do you have an mp3 player kitty? That podcast I linked to does that for you.

OP posts:
kittywise · 07/09/2008 16:29

oh, (duh) will an ipod do?

cwtchy · 07/09/2008 16:41

Can I join in too? Have been meaning to do something like this for a while.

I used to row competitively before I had DD, but now I get out of puff doing the actions when singing row row row your boat.

Right I'm going off to charge my ipod and will start tonight when DD is in bed.

giddykipper · 07/09/2008 17:29

ipod is perfect - if you go on iTunes Store, search for "couch to 5k" you will find a podcast by Robert Ullrey called Podcasts for Running. This is the one I'm going to use.

Hello cwtchy

giddykipper · 07/09/2008 17:29

(it's the same one I linked too before but an easier way to get it for your iPod)

OneLieIn · 07/09/2008 17:30

So tonight? Ineed to know how much I can eat of my Sunday roast DH is cooking (and whether treacle pudding is really out of the question!)

giddykipper · 07/09/2008 17:43

I've just eaten roast duck with potatoes and carrots, about to tuck into bread and butter pudding . I think we should leave it a few hours before we go for a run OneLieIn! I'm not planning on going out until it's dark anyway.

I'm starting again, for the third time! Agree, proper running shoes are so essential. I injured myself last year because I didn't have proper shoes and was out for 4 months with plantar fasciitis. Then I started running again, but stopped completely during the summer hols, so am ready to start AGAIN. Am planning on running tommorrow. I have a treadmill in my garage, so there really is no excuse. Good luck everyone, it is SO worth it.

OneLieIn · 07/09/2008 17:52

OK, roast pork with extra roasties.

Eaten too much.

Can't get off sofa.

Must run.

Must run.

OP posts:
funnypeculiar · 07/09/2008 19:29

Right - well, I've been running

Twasn't too bad - although it was harder than I expected - I read it & thought, oh that's easy....

The podcast is a help - the 'motivational trance' music isn't exactly my normal cup of tea, but it defn helped the pace of my fast walking & being told what to do suits me in exercise terms

My 7 yo shoes will defn need an upgrade if I manage to keep this up ....

andiem · 07/09/2008 19:32

right I will have to go tomorrow now as we still haven't had tea
