Couch potato to 5k - anyone fancy starting?

This is what I'm talking about

And there are podcasts for your mp3 player to help.

Anyone feel like a bit of mutual motivation?

Oh well done funnypeculiar, you've done us proud.

Cool, I'm in. My dog is in for a shock. Will go and get running stuff on right now and see if I can run off my hangover.

Any more wannabe runners lurking out there?

giddykipper · 07/09/2008 20:10

I think we've forgotten Celery from the list:

I'm in from Thursday. Am in ireland till then in the middle of nowhere and I'm not confident enough on the country roads. Drivers here are loonies!

In a perverse way I'm looking forward to it

cwtchy · 07/09/2008 21:10

Ok, I did it!

It was very very hard. I am, quite frankly, appalled at how unfit I have become! But I'm so glad I have finally started to do something about it...Thank you Giddykipper for starting this thread!

So has anybody else got out this evening?

giddykipper · 07/09/2008 21:25

Just back - I DID IT TOO!

I was overtaken by another jogger though

I was convinced that I wouldn't be able to manage week 1 but I could [chuffed emoticon]

The music on that podcast is dull though, I think it needs a bit of Frankie goes to Hollywood to get the blood pumping.

BlessThisMess · 07/09/2008 21:51

I'm in! I popped in once or twice on the old thread, but they're mostly onto 10K now!! Whereas I did Week 1, then had to have 5 weeks off due to a really bad cough. I've signed up to do a 5K on 12th October.

I just started on it again this week - went out last Sunday, then Tuesday, and just a short time out at about 5pm today. Am up to running 2 mins followed by walking 2 mins!

Must figure out how to use an MP3 player....

Any more for any more??

Well done, giddykipper and cwtchy - agree on the Frankie, giddykipper, or a nice bit of Duran Duran

kittywise · 07/09/2008 22:19

Well done on those of you who got out! I didn't tonight, settling in new au pair, too many kids! ( excuses excuses)
Will try tomorrow

kiwibella · 07/09/2008 22:52

I'm tempted... but I so lack motivation!! I have looked at the couch potato stuff before but never got off my ar$e.

I'll contemplate it tomorrow... I love reading your pride about your achievements at running tonight

giddykipper · 07/09/2008 22:57

Well funnypeculiar, perhaps that's our motivation to get through this, once we're running 5k we can listen to what we want to!

I've actually got some faith in this, I am very pleasantly surprised at how I managed to do it properly this evening. Don't get me wrong, it was hard work, but I did it.

You're name's on the list now, you have to join in

misselizabethbennett · 08/09/2008 13:18

Me, me, me! Can I join please?

I did this in January for a 5k run in June, but on my own and without the podcast. So mine is really couch to 5k, back to couch and then up to 5k again.

I'd love to get into this again. I'll do my first one tonight if I'm home from work before dark, or early tomorrow.

Celery · 08/09/2008 13:23

I'm going out tonight. I run with a friend once or twice a week ( or atleast I used to! ) which is so motivating. He's coming out with me tonight, and he hasn't been running much either, so it's back to square one for both of us.

misdee · 08/09/2008 13:25

go for it ladies!

i started the original coach to 5km thread back in january, but due to impending bump havent run since about march.

i will be starting another one for newbies after xmas!

i really enjoyed running, and cant wait to get started again.

kittywise · 08/09/2008 13:25

Well I went out for my run today!!
Thought I would be clever and do 3 mins jog 1 min walk. I managed that for about 15 mins then had to do 1 min run 1 min run.
I haven't downloaded podcast yet. I should it will make me more disciplined about sticking to the times

I feel better for it though

And you know I wouldn't have done it if i didn't feel i had to report back here

twinksprite · 08/09/2008 18:29

I DID IT [SHOCK] i didnt download the pod cast but i will. i feel so much better for going out and doing something

giddykipper · 08/09/2008 19:48

Well done kitty! It's good to feel good, I felt much better for it too.

And hello Misselizabeth.

giddykipper · 08/09/2008 19:51

Oh and well done too twinksprite!

OP posts:
Janni · 08/09/2008 20:01

OK, Ill try, but am not promising anything as when I've tried jogging in the past (admittedly years ago and when I was heavier) I had a problem with one of my knees.

I'll try and fit in workout 1 tomorrow and report back.

cq · 08/09/2008 21:25

I did it!!

DOwnloaded podcast too, thought music good but bloke's voice a bit creepy and pretty flat.

Anyway, he doesn't talk much which is good, couldn't stand all that 'Yay' and 'Way to go' nonsense which so many trainers seem to think is necessary.

Tried out new Shock Absorber bra too - have to say it's fab - so nice to be able to run and not worry about me norks.

Well when I say run, I mean trot sedately.

So, found it really not too difficult but my legs are complaining now, even though I did cool down properly and even did some stretches afterwards. Just 42-yr-old bones saying 'you're having a laugh' I guess.

BlessThisMess · 08/09/2008 22:33

Well I'd best get off to bed soon because my plan is to get up around 6.30am and run then! DH gets home too late to go out in the evenings. I'm hoping I'll manage the Week 3 plan but we'll see! Have got the podcast onto my computer but not yet onto MP3 player - that will have to be tomorrow's adventure!

giddykipper · 08/09/2008 22:36

Good luck with the morning, I'm rubbish with mornings and I know it would never happen if I had to get up earlier than absolutely necessary. I'm planning my second outing tomorrow night.

OP posts:
calsworld · 08/09/2008 22:39

Hope its not too late to join? I bought a book and shoes and super clamping bra back in Feb - then had really bad illnesess for a month and never got going again.

I was aiming to go out for a run tomorrow and still will - hadn't heard of the podcast tomorrow so like Blessthismess will have a go at getting it onto my ipod tomorrow and doing it then...

Will report back in the morning

BroccoliSpears · 08/09/2008 22:51

Hello. I have a question for you: When you start a running programme that does for example 60 seconds running, 90 seconds walking and so on for 20 minutes, how do you keep an eye on the time and know it's time to stop?
