If you instantly jump from 'reasonable reaction' (the constant biting has damaged that part of your tongue, to 'unreasonable reaction' (OMG I have mouth cancer!) then it's your health anxiety that needs treatment, not your mouth.

KeeleyJ · 16/05/2026 12:45

Assuming you have regular dental checkups, I wouldn't worry as the dentist looks for signs of oral cancer.

You don’t have mouth cancer. You have a mental health issue that needs treating.

My suggestion would be to get an urgent appointment with your dentist. Do not want to worry you but my son’s dentist diagnosed his. Please do not leave it unchecked. Take care .

catipuss · 17/05/2026 11:08

My dentist says to look for white patches in your mouth and glands up in your neck. And obvious things like ulcers and sore places that don't go away. I don't think biting causes cancer although you might have some scar tissue. Make an appointment with your dentist if there is something specific you are worried about you don't need to wait for your routine appointment. Can you sleep with a mouth guard if you bite in your sleep?

Because nothing you’ve described is a symptom of mouth cancer, and you also told us that you have very bad health anxiety, which is a mental illness.

You grind your teeth at night and you keep biting at the same spot on your tongue. That’s very common and doesn’t suggest mouth cancer. I’m guessing that each time you bite it you then keep poking at it with your tongue etc (because we all do that with any mouth injury, it’s hard to resist at the best of times and even more so if you’re fretting about it). I accidentally bite the same spot inside my left cheek quite often; it’s just down to things like the shape of your jaw, position of your teeth etc.

Get your dentist to look at your next appointment, or if you can’t wait until your next routine checkup, just book one and explain about the tooth grinding and the repeated biting.

Getting a mouth guard fitted will really help with the tooth grinding, if you haven’t already got one.

Threeslothsontheshirt · 17/05/2026 12:56

Your dentist would notice anything sinister straightaway. Try not to worry but I’d be the same. Get the dentist to have a look xx

spekky · 17/05/2026 12:57

OP, I think the issue is that you’ve said yourself you know exactly why this has happened. But you still seem to have convinced yourself it’s cancer.

I’d book a GP appointment for your anxiety

OriginalPedant · 17/05/2026 13:07

If you’re worried, bring your dentist appointment forward to have it checked.

Sparrowsandbudgies · 17/05/2026 13:10

Just make an early dentist appointment and get it checked if you’re worried.

I dont bite the same spot on my tongue at night ..well that im aware otherwise it would be sore.
It can be randomly in the day when im eating ill bite it and it will be exactly the same spot each time..and maybe every few months not all the time..
I dont no what made me randomly look at it all of a sudden and thats when i noticed the area looked different ....im just hoping that maybe bitjng the same place on your tongue over the y3ars can lead to this

Thats what i was thinking but its not that round and definded looking at pics...its more soft skin colour

Deadleaves77 · 17/05/2026 16:21

Grinding your teeth and repeatedly biting your tongue will make it look different

Soft, skin colored and looks a bit different aren't symptoms of mouth cancer
