Flu/cough with gastro pain/nausea

Hi,

So on Christmas Eve, Eve I woke up shivering body aches and a cough.

Christmas morning - still the same symptoms as above but also the worse HEARTBURN and NAUSEA!!!

I'm now on day 23 - yep I'm counting because it is miserable!

Coughs still lingering a little bit but much better but the gastro symptoms are horrible! Upper stomach pain/burning, reflux. Nausea is getting better ( I think mostly due to Silicon gel from boots)

I've got a drs appointment on Friday l, just wondering if anyone else has/had this?

What did the Dr give, how long did it last?

*Note I've never had reflux/heartburn before. I'm mid thirties, healthy weight, don't drink/smoke, not a coffee drinker - I don't fit and of the "reflux criteria"

Thanks

Yes I had all of that. I was very concerned about the cough and crackly breathing but rode it out at home in bed without antibiotics. One of my neighbours felt so bad she went to hospital, although frankly the total lack of care and general shit show of our local hospital wouldn't have been much help.

The cough took weeks to clear up.

justasking111 · 19/01/2025 11:37

Husband went to GP, he had pleurisy last year. Was given antibiotics and steroids. Recovered after that.

Mygangofthree · 20/01/2025 07:22

@AmandaHoldensLips exactly the same as our local hospital. I'm not knocking the NHS, I've got friends who work there and the understaffing is ridiculous.
How many weeks did it take you to feel totally back to normal do you reckon?

Has anyone got a really sore throat with this as well ? Like you haven’t got any saliva and burning pain ? (Covid negative).

Mygangofthree · 21/01/2025 14:26

@JTA1972 I personally find that when I'm stressed my saliva dries up, and whatever this is, is really stressful!
Where is your burning pain?

Update

The GP seems to think it's gastritis triggered by whatever this chest infection was - bacteria/virus ?

But they are also sending me for bloods and I'm having to do 2 poo samples.

If nothing comes back from the samples they have said I need a gastro referral, hopefully it's goes through as urgent as our hospital currently has a wait time of 67weeks for gastro 🫣

I'm so glad I've seen this thread!
I had a rotten flu over Christmas and new year, and I've had wicked heartburn and burning/raw oesophageal pain daily since! My actual stomach keeps feeling dicky too, just a general gnawing ache in the area pretty much 24/7. No nausea though.
I've been to the GP who just gave me omeprazole and wants me to book in again in a couple of weeks to see if it's made a difference, and if not referring me for gastroscopy. I've ordered a H pylori test kit in the mean time.

Mygangofthree · 21/01/2025 14:57

@Kaminari it's horrible isn't it! I was getting the burning throat pain until I got a pillow wedge to sleep on and now my throat doesn't hurt anymore.
Do you have the burning/ gnawing pain in your upper abdomen (stomach) it's like that horrible pain you get when you are starving hungry but worse and it won't go.

I’ve had this. It started before Christmas. The gastro symptoms were so awful that my GP organised a gall bladder scan to be on the safe side! I’ve never experienced anything like the pains and heartburn that I had with it.
Also, my cold was so bad that it ended up as pneumonia and I needed antibiotics.
Still don’t feel right after all this time.

Yes, gastritis was my diagnosis too, and I had poo tests for blood, h pylori and something else (all negative). At first it seemed like an attack of something such as gallstones, but now seems like it may have been viral. Not something I’ve ever experienced before, though. The pains were really concerning. One night my chest pains were so bad I almost called an ambulance, but it seems to have been reflux or heartburn.
My gastro symptoms then resolved and the cough, cold and chest infection took over.

@LeaveALittleNote did they prescribe you anything for your gastritis?
So glad that gastro pains are better for you now.hopefully you'll be feeling back to normal soon 🤞

@Mygangofthree They said they’ll prescribe omneprozole if it happens again. So far it hasn’t happened again… hopefully it never will, because it’s really horrible and debilitating!
Thank you! I hope you get well soon.

Mygangofthree · 21/01/2025 15:16

I wish mine would go lol how long did you have the heartburn for before it went?

Calmhappyandhealthy · 21/01/2025 15:17

Have you tried ginger for the tummy symptoms?

Mygangofthree · 21/01/2025 15:19

@Calmhappyandhealthy I have, but it just made the burning pain worse 😔

Oh no! Thats awful 😖

NotaRealHousewife · 21/01/2025 15:58

It's a nightmare, I'm week 2 and it's never ending

Decided to try and go out for a short walk today to get some fresh air, chest is now sore and I have coughed all afternoon

And nope still can't go far from a bathroom, nausea and lack of appetite is a good start to the diet but it's a bit drastic!

What did he give you for gastritis?

Mygangofthree · 21/01/2025 16:27

@NotaRealHousewife week 4 here, the nausea goes but now I'm left with. Burning pain in my upper abdomen, not much of a trade off!
Does yours also feel like a really bad case of heartburn?

OP posts:
Mygangofthree · 21/01/2025 16:28

@justasking111 I'm in the car and don't have it with me but it's 'lap' something stop the stomach acid

OP posts:
NotaRealHousewife · 21/01/2025 16:39

It did but not so much now, I actually thought I had a broken rib it was so painful

It's just now a constant low key nausea, a bit like a hangover!

Mygangofthree · 21/01/2025 16:47

@NotaRealHousewife that exactly how I described it to my husband as a hangover - the worst one!

That's good. I would also take gaviscon advance after every meal. It really does quieten down that gnawing hungry but full feeling. Very bland diet. You can find that on the web. But basically no red meat, no fatty foods, tomatoes, onions, spices,.
Drinks no coffee, soda, beer, wine.

I'm bored with toast for breakfast, bland soups and bread for lunch, fish or chicken with vegetables for dinner mid afternoon I'm okay with biscuits or a scone. Ditto for supper.

Small meals and snacks.

As for meds avoid ibuprofen, aspirin based painkillers.

It will go. I'm slowly improving.
