Flu

DH and I have succumbed to the flu that's been going around and feel absolutely awful. Started with body aches, sweating/chills and headache. I was also vomiting and barely able to even keep water down. Doing a little better today though.

We've cancelled our Christmas plans to see family but I'm wondering by what day you started to feel better. Tomorrow is day 3/4 and, with young DC, I'd love some reassurance that tomorrow won't be completely rubbish. Feeling very sad that Christmas is spoilt when it's my favourite time of year.

Thanks, sort of helpful to know it could be related. I felt like it must be but have been worrying a bit. And also I'm finding that harder to deal with than the illness!

TinyMouseTheatre · 28/12/2024 17:59

I'm just n day 9 and still feel rough but not half as bad as last weekend.

Muchtoomuchtodo · 29/12/2024 13:30

Day 8 and I’ve turned a corner. Think the antibiotics and steroids are helping but the steroids are giving me some weird dreams!

CandyCatsHat · 29/12/2024 14:03

We are on day 10 here, but have turned a corner. Just hacking cough, occasional vomiting and fatigue now. I'd love to have a Christmas that's not fucked by whatever is brought home from school.

user1499848 · 29/12/2024 14:10

Day 9 here, coughing but not much coming up. Really tired and feeling quite nauseous. I completely missed out on Christmas, no nice food, no family, guests or presents, couldn't concentrate on Tv. What a shit time.

Get well soon everyone!

blueskiesandsun · 29/12/2024 17:40

I’m on day 5 or 6 of what surely must be flu.

Christmas Eve felt good, slight runny nose. Christmas Day suddenly felt very weird, couldn’t concentrate on anything and had to lay down and sleep, horrid cough. Boxing Day got through all the tissues in the world, coughing, sneezing, sweating, huge effort to go upstairs / downstairs.

Today I’m mainly exhausted, been sleeping most of the day, not felt up to even watching TV. I sleep but wake up still feeling shattered. Surely this can’t last much longer…!

Returnofthemag · 29/12/2024 19:11

I'm on day 16 and really struggling to shift it. The crippling fatigue has eased but think it morphed into a sinus infection about ten days ago. Going to speak to the doctor about potentially getting some antibiotics as I'm not 100% that what I'm dealing with now is still the flu.

Abiharwich · 29/12/2024 20:08

Oh no! I checked out your post as I have had this nasty cold since Tuesday... I seem to be stuck with the cough and headache for now. Wishing everyone a speedy recovery ❤️‍🩹

blueskiesandsun · 29/12/2024 20:20

Sounds miserable @Returnofthemag I know how horrid sinusitis can be.

My sinuses are really blocked now and causing a headache. I’ve started Pirinase in the hope it calms things down and wards off proper sinusitis.

I brought ours home from work, so other shite routes to Christmas are available!!

This is exactly what happened to me....it was the weirdest thing....absolutely fine all Xmas day and just had to lay down in the evening. Dragged myself through Boxing Day, went to bed that night and didn't wake up until yesterday. But I've got no snotty nose, I'm not vomiting....not even coughing that .much. whatever it is, its awful

I posted earlier about my 2025 resolution to minimise a shite Xmas by not going to any work or personal events in December. I can’t stop DS from going to school but other than that DH and I have sworn to not socialise at all in December 2025. Last year DH was in bed for 2 weeks and this year it’s my turn.

CorsicaDreaming · 29/12/2024 23:57

@SanctusInDistress - I'm so peed off by the work one this year. It was a ''meeting" but one of those 'jolly' efforts that just feel like an exercise in pointlessness. And it was about fifty people in a room with no opening windows. That was built like that while the pandemic was going on - and I actually raised at the time that it should have opening windows!!! So it feels like a treble whammy - pointless meeting completely bolloxing up all my holiday.

I've been really ill - in bed and then on antibiotics ever since (now ten days). Now my husband and son have both come down with it. And DH has full blown flu symptoms.

This after my son being off school for the last fortnight before that in early December with a temp up to 40C and every symptom going.

It has truly been utter shite!!

I agree, need to be a hermit.

Thing is, what I love most is creating weird food and fab cocktails and having people round...

It’s the work ones that are the germ
horrors. What you get up to in private time up to you, but work parties should not be mandatory. (Ours is). Next year I’ll call in sick for work events in December.

CandyCatsHat · 30/12/2024 09:15

This corner I turned...ha! been up with toothache and earache. DH also has same, plus a gammy eye now. Anyone else? Not snotty or sneezing at all still. Even tepid water hurts teeth.

CorsicaDreaming · 30/12/2024 12:54

@SanctusInDistress - I agree, I'm going to book the day off leave or call in sick next year. There is no way I am ruining my entire Christmas for a completely pointless work thing… And then it was just weird hybrid event half of it was updates on stuff we needed to know for work after Christmas so vaguely useful. But dressed up as the most tedious "Christmas jolly" in the history of work events.

They should do a "jolly" that is completely voluntary (and I am definitely not going!) And then an update in January of the important work stuff - so if a virus goes round and everyone ends up ill it can be on their time!

Well that's an entirely new set of symptoms!

Nope we are all still on snotty, wheezy, coughy, grumpy, achey here.

Will look forward to your set kicking in from NYE!!

TwilightAb · 30/12/2024 13:37

I got my flu from my daughter. She was poorly for a couple of days and has been quite sniffly but recovered very quickly. I came down with the full force of it. My dh has had a very slight headache and said he feels something but not exactly unwell. My ds has had no symptoms. The reason I think is everyone except me had the flu vaccine. So next year I will be booking that in as soon as Autumn is upon us!

CandyCatsHat · 30/12/2024 17:47

@corsica noooo. That sounds like a terrible version of Snow White.

@corsica noooo. That sounds like a terrible version of Snow White.

LOL. Snow Shite!! 🤣

And the particular highlight was the night after Boxing Day night, sitting on the bathroom floor for 1.5 hours while my 11 year old had an explosive mix of diarrhoea and constipation saying I couldn't leave him. He was very appreciative after, saying I was the best mum ever.

I sat there and drank a pint of Guinness and ate smoked salmon on sourdough.

And if that isn't Christmas glamour, then I don't know what is.

I can't quite fathom how we've managed to tick quite such a range of symptoms between us...

And my DH is now chuntering away like Raymond Briggs Father Christmas and deciding a whisky is best way to cure his flu... and he truly does have flu!! Gawd.

PoisonRain · 30/12/2024 19:17

Day 6 for me - sort of meandering sore throat and chills since Christmas Day then a cough. Carried on mostly as normal and hoped it was a cold.

Last night felt suddenly awful and took to my bed - body aches, blocked ears, hacking cough that sounds like it's rumbling from the bottom of my lungs, all sense of taste and smell gone. Had to cancel a hair appt today that I was looking forward to!

My head and throat feel like they're full of rocks and it hurts to talk. I just managed a slice of toast, let's see how my innards cope with it.

PoisonRain · 30/12/2024 19:39

FFS, DH just wandered in (I came back to bed) and I said the toast wasn't sitting well. He immediately said, "That's because you've not eaten and you're getting worked up."

Worked up? I am sick, not worked up. He minimises everything to the point I want to strangle him, he can't comprehend any experience outside his own. I've only known him take to his bed twice in the last 26 years - once with a throat infection, and once when he slept off a stomach bug. I caught that from him and was in the bathroom for 2 days!

That does mean, however, that he's only had covid as mild cold and I don't think he's ever had flu. He pops a few tablets when he gets a coldy sensation and goes about his business. He just observed me disbelievingly when I was ill for 10 days with covid. Soooo annoying that he thinks I'm melodramatic, I'm really not.

QuestionableMouse · 30/12/2024 19:43

NotbloodyGivingupYet · 28/12/2024 15:58

I remember one of my friends bursting into tears out of the blue, came down with flu the next day. Definitely a symptom for some.

I very rarely cry but when I have flu the littlest thing sets me off. I sobbed yesterday because my sister was cross at me over something stupid (and not my fault)

1AnotherOne · 31/12/2024 01:23

I am suffering badly with what I usually get when I have a cold - excessive saliva. I am having to swallow a lot or spit out (I’ve filled half a cup in a couple of hours) but swallowed much more and it’s making me belch a lot.

any tips for helping it stop? I’m beyond tired but when I do fall asleep I wake up gagging. Wouldn’t normally be worrying too much but for a furniture delivery at 7:30am I need to be up for 😩

popandchoc · 31/12/2024 08:59

Had an awful sleep . Kept waking up and coughing and shivering and then woke up sweating . My temperature was 40 this morning so hopefully comes down now I’ve had some paracetamol .
