Is there a virus going around lasting weeks?

So I was told I had early stages of pneumonia, I feel ok generally just an awful cold and wheeze. When I wake up in the morning I'm fine but as the day goes on it's like mucus is producing on my lungs??? I've never had anything like it! I have my energy back but the wheeze is scaring me. Not breathless at all.
Is there a virus going around lasting weeks? I've been unwell for a month now but the wheeze started about two weeks ago, I'm worried this has caused lasting damage to my airways..albeit I have asthma but it's so mild you wouldn't even think I have it at all, it's only when I get sick or I'm in cold weather that it's evident I do have a bit of asthma but apart from that you would never know! So I don't think this is asthma related...it's super strange and worrying

I'm so totally, totally fed up with everything at the moment. It's just relentless and I'm genuinely getting to the point where I can't remember how being well feels! I think the last time I was properly okay was at the start of October! 😑😕😕😕

Honestly I completely get it. All I genuinely want to do nowadays is sleep because I'm just consistently ill.... definitely affecting my mental health

Mine started mid-October with hay fever symptoms that just got worse then cleared after a couple of weeks apart from the cough and having to sleep due to exhaustion. Worst of all was the sore and itchy eyes. 5 weeks later symptoms got worse and it was covid. Still have the itchy/sore eyes and tiredness. Chest is clear but still having major coughing fits. In the interim had flu and covid boosters but just can’t shake it off. Some days have to sleep mid afternoon!

Oh yes I relate to the sleeping in the afternoon!

8th day of fever here. Coming down slowly.
Throat, cough, etc slightly improved compared to last week. Streaming eyes the whole time, cannot remember this before

I could walk a few hundred metres if I really had to. I am very glad I do not.

emilylouisex1 · 18/12/2023 14:50

Still squeaking when I breath but I feel absolutely fine now. This is horrendous.

Thankfully I feel much better. I'm still fatigued like I tried to hoover today and then stopped...but I still feel OK...
I went out yesterday when I say out I'm mean I went to the newsagents and I wasn't reeling afterwards usually I'd be in a hoop, feeling awful with no energy wiped out.
So there is light at the end.
The sweating and the pains, aches and the pull on my arms have eased off...I'm still off work a few more days....I always appreciate feeling well but gosh after this dose I feel for anyone not well over Christmas or with an illness...health is wealth.....

Glad to hear you're on the mend! I'm not as wheezy but now developed chest pain 😫😫😫😫 it's directly on my sternum and upper back, it's never ending, I'm not going to go a&e but I might try and get a GP appointment although they'll probably say a&e

How are you doing OP? I hope you've actually bloody seen someone now!

I've just been prescribed a salbutamol inhaler - bit random but they want to see if something helps! I'm seeing the GP (instead of the paramedics) next Thursday.

Noisinmaro · 20/12/2023 16:06

I've a chest xray booked waiting on the call...I'm much better...just when I do jobs like hoover I get very tired whereas normally wouldn't be a bother....I don't fully have my energy back....
But I've no awful feeling like I was reeling its the weirdess thing...and aches and pains all gone...
Feel fir yee who are still feeling off...
I also was going into get flu jab before I got this dose but had to ring in sick...
I will defo be getting it next year...had it the last 2 yrs and didn't get anything major...

Hope u feel better soon emilylouise and go get checked out if not...

Has the inhaler helped much? & I ended up going a&e yesterday but only due to the awful chest pain I've been getting, everything normal including x ray BUT they were more concerned about this wheeze as I am completely fine in myself and the wheeze is so loud. Steroids for 5 days and if no improvement with the wheeze they said to come back to a&e (bit worried why he said a&e and not GP) but 🤷🏻‍♀️ hopefully it works. Said the pain was just likely a bit of costochondritis.

It's awful isn't it. I did see a doctor at a&e due to the chest pains I've now been getting but they said it is costochondritis. They were more concerned about this wheeze I still have, 5 days of steroids and if no improvement they said to come back to a&e. What could this be? I'm hoping it's just left over from the virus but the fact he said to come back to a&e when I feel fine in myself now basically (minus this wheeze) is a bit scary.

Yes there is! I’m a nurse and also think it’s RSV as we’ve had a huge increase lately.

How long is it been lingering for? I've had this since beginning of November now😭

How do docs know if it's bacterial or not? First round of anti biotics did nothing for me so a&e doc said yesterday they aren't gonna give anti biotics as clearly viral

Allfurcoatandnoknickers · 21/12/2023 14:56

That’s the million dollar question. I have lung damage so the Nice guidelines are two weeks of doxycycline if I get a flare up - will see what Dr says later. My chest has eased a little but I suspect it is a viral chest infection

How is everyone?

Hope you are getting better.

Mine finally went. I was using First Defence for a few days as I had to go out. Not sure if it was a coincidence or helped.

CornishPorsche · 29/12/2023 11:37

Saw GP yesterday. Thinks I've picked up consecutive viral infections so nothing much except watch and wait again. Inhaler does nothing. Am having bloods for TSH (thyroid) as mum mentioned it as a possibility - cough, itchy and scaly skin, thinning eyebrows, tinnitus, hearing problems, icy cold hands and feet. Not things I was going to bother the GP with!

VeryInteresting12 · 29/12/2023 11:58

We’ve had this horrible virus.
Started with me feeling feverish and sore throat the Tuesday before Xmas.
Ive tested every day for 10 days and used three different types of covid tests.
My Partner started about 4 days after me and has also tested negative.
Same with my son.
i suspect between us. We’ve done around 20 tests and they’ve all been negative.
Ive had covid once, a year ago.
My partner has never had it and my son has had it at least twice.

My cough is settling around 10 days in- at least it doesn’t hurt.
My partner is struggling a bit and is whistling between coughs when it’s bad.

My son isn’t coughing much, just very quiet and sleeping a lot and has a sore throat.

I don’t believe it’s Covid, as all of the tests at various different times are negative. We’ve done throat, cheek and nose swabs and made sure we didn’t eat or drink an hour prior…

Hoping it settles soon as Xmas has been a washout!

Cookerhood · 29/12/2023 12:16

Why keep on testing, it's a waste of money? There are always respiratory viruses around at this time of year, I've had one myself - I did test but only once!

Awww happy to hear you are feeling better! I'm much better but I still have the wheeze, going to wait until my asthma review now, I have a feeling the virus has probably worsened my asthma

I only tested for Covid a few times but only because I had the virus for over a month. It's definitely worsened my asthma, I have a review in a week for that so will discuss with the nurse, still have the ongoing wheeze it sucks

I cough with hayfever and that seemed never ending this year. Just when I thought it was finishing it got worse again and since the beginning of December I've had a hacking cough. It started off as a dry cough, no fever, and then a couple of weeks ago I came down with a cold and the cough became throaty. I can't seem to shake the end of the cold and I'm fed up with sounding like a performing seal and just not feeling 'right'. I've already apologised to the neighbours about the coughing!

I hope everyone feels better soon.
