Is there a virus going around lasting weeks?

So I was told I had early stages of pneumonia, I feel ok generally just an awful cold and wheeze. When I wake up in the morning I'm fine but as the day goes on it's like mucus is producing on my lungs??? I've never had anything like it! I have my energy back but the wheeze is scaring me. Not breathless at all.
Is there a virus going around lasting weeks? I've been unwell for a month now but the wheeze started about two weeks ago, I'm worried this has caused lasting damage to my airways..albeit I have asthma but it's so mild you wouldn't even think I have it at all, it's only when I get sick or I'm in cold weather that it's evident I do have a bit of asthma but apart from that you would never know! So I don't think this is asthma related...it's super strange and worrying

I am on week 9 of a cold/flu virus. I've had 'flu' twice in that time, lasting a week each time and in between the 'flu' weeks I have a stinking cold.

Week 9?! My goodness. That is so long!
I'm on week 5 now I reckon. Cough has dramatically changed, I'm just worried about the crackle I can hear when I breath but I am not struggling for breath at all

I read an article earlier that was discussing that whooping cough seems to be doing the rounds. It can drag on for months. Do your symptoms match that op? Whatever it is I hope it improves for you soon. It’s so tiring when you have a constant cough.

Doesn't really resonate with me! Coughing much less than I was, still coughing though none the less

I’ve had this and it is covid.

emilylouisex1 · 13/12/2023 17:33

@Wednesdaysotherchild at this point I think I would prefer that lol least I will then know what's causing it but I've tested negative so many times

I also suspect Covid. How can we tell?

You can take a covid test

There's quite a bit of evidence that COVID can cause immune dysfunction for months after an infection leading to other infections taking hold that wouldn't have done otherwise or taking much longer to clear up.

Wasn't there an article on the BBC about a 100 day cough? Even bad lung infections before COVID would be 4 5 weeks max.

I have a dose few weeks glad I'm nit alone...
Feel reassured reading this thread...
First week very bad cough would wake up with sore throat, other morning a head cold, had phlegm, went to dr gave me antibiotics...
Second week felt weary aches pains, sweating on and off ....
3rd week same as week 2 very week, its when I go to do something like clear the table or sweep floor I'm barely able then I get so weak tired after...
4 th week just when I think I'm better I get a relapse of feeling tired...
I was good Monday then Tuesday spent day in bed, felt OK yesterday but if I did too much started to lag with feeling drained I've NO energy....
Up now and not feeling as good as yesterday so hope I improve as day goes on...
I need to get back to work...but this us dragging on....
I always take a while to get out of colds flu chest infections...I've no energy, drained and just fed up.....

Same as me! You're not alone, definitely something horrid spreading around, I feel a bit more energised today than yesterday but again I'm still not 100%

Yeah I feel so drained worn out and wrecked, I've done nothing for 4 weeks...mooch around house, sick of the 4 walls....
I was in great spirits before I got chest infection, didn't feel ran down or anything, I go to bed early, I walk alot, I eat healthy...this sose has knocked me...
I think the antibiotic floored me as well...
I'm on a probiotic, vit c drink with zinc and selenium, I take b12, D, and enzyme co10 all the time anyways....
Just wish I'd get my energy back and this pull drain in my arms would go away....
Anyways alot worse going on in the world, bigger problems...
Just glad I'm not alone as I nearly feel maybe it in my head then I go to do few jobs around the house...I do them but I have to sit down or lie down after for a while feeling crappy...

poetryandwine · 14/12/2023 10:57

OMG. I am at the end of Week 1. Consistent low fever, testing neg. I assumed my flu jab had failed. The only thing getting better is the aches and pains. The coughing is so tiring.

I have asthma that is normally well controlled but is acting up with this.

I need to drag myself out of bed today and do a few easy things and I am dreading it.

But it is good to know I am not alone

Allfurcoatandnoknickers · 14/12/2023 12:07

Really good to know I am not alone! I've got asthma, mild bronchiectasis. Managed to get some antibiotics last night for bronch. flare up for two weeks. Feeling wiped out - just wish I could shift the phlegm. Drinking honey, lemon and hot water, doing multiple steam inhalations etc., but just won't go. Coming into week 4 here...

emilylouisex1 · 16/12/2023 14:40

Ffs I've been ok no wheezing for past few days, got a little cold again and I'm so wheezy!! What is going on

I felt OK Wednesday, like was delighted I had my energy backt then felt awful Thursday had no energy wiped, had to go to bed,
Yesterday felt just OK, like very low energy, then today don't feel too hectic...very tired, low energy dragging myself around the place..
Usually I'm in good form and generally just get on with things...
But this has floored me and I'm not shaking it off fast enough, symptoms lingering on...
I'm really Afraid il have to go back to Drs Monday if I can't go back to work..just want to get back to normal...
I'm getting my bloods done but not until early Janurary....

It's honestly awful. I feel generally ok in myself but now today I have a cold again and Noticing the crackling when I'm breathing again although not breathless. I fear I will need to go back to my GP too and I'm really trying to avoid them

You said you had early stages.of pneumonia, I've looked after a parent who had pneumonia didn't seem too bad, started as sore throat and chest infection, then had to go to hospital was was on oxygen, antibiotics etc etc came home and I've seen it takes ages to fully come around....
So mind yourself....

CappelliBand · 16/12/2023 15:07

End of week 7 here.

Very congested with cold for two weeks then dry coughing but bringing up wads of quite solid phlegm every now and again. I feel ok in myself bar the cough but every now and then it feels like the feverish feeling is starting again but never gets worse.

Negative Covid test. GP says lungs sound good so hopefully will fade soon. Negative test for whooping cough that’s doing the rounds.

Well yes, when I went to see the out of hours GP he said I had early stages of pneumonia, if I had left it any longer it would have developed into full blown pneumonia. So I think he was saying it had the potential of becoming pneumonia...honestly I am not sure, all I know is I felt horrific then all of a sudden felt better for a few days and now I'm wheezing again...no cough though.

Edited

It's horrible. My oximeter is showing low oxygen again but last time it did this I went a&e with 100% oxygen levels and felt a right idiot. It's a bit flimsy this one so I doubt it's true. Feel fine I can breath ok currently

I'm so totally, totally fed up with everything at the moment. It's just relentless and I'm genuinely getting to the point where I can't remember how being well feels! I think the last time I was properly okay was at the start of October! 😑😕😕😕

bouncydog · 16/12/2023 22:10

Mine started mid-October with hay fever symptoms that just got worse then cleared after a couple of weeks apart from the cough and having to sleep due to exhaustion. Worst of all was the sore and itchy eyes. 5 weeks later symptoms got worse and it was covid. Still have the itchy/sore eyes and tiredness. Chest is clear but still having major coughing fits. In the interim had flu and covid boosters but just can’t shake it off. Some days have to sleep mid afternoon!
