Is there a virus going around lasting weeks?

So I was told I had early stages of pneumonia, I feel ok generally just an awful cold and wheeze. When I wake up in the morning I'm fine but as the day goes on it's like mucus is producing on my lungs??? I've never had anything like it! I have my energy back but the wheeze is scaring me. Not breathless at all.
Is there a virus going around lasting weeks? I've been unwell for a month now but the wheeze started about two weeks ago, I'm worried this has caused lasting damage to my airways..albeit I have asthma but it's so mild you wouldn't even think I have it at all, it's only when I get sick or I'm in cold weather that it's evident I do have a bit of asthma but apart from that you would never know! So I don't think this is asthma related...it's super strange and worrying

My son has a cough and it is relentless. No other symptoms. Worse at night. Really odd. But constant constant coughing. Sounds dry mainly.

Definitely something going around

Yes, DS has had it for a month now and I'm not far behind. Its not overly unusual at this time of year but still grim.

VivaVivaa · 10/12/2023 20:16

We (family of 4) had covid mid-end of October then almost straight into RSV early-mid November. Confirmed on swabs when the baby ended up in paeds A&E across the 2 separate occasions with reduced feeds and shooting temps. Lots of snot with covid and horrible, horrible cough and wheeze with RSV.

We all got over covid relatively quickly including the baby, maybe a week or so.

The cough and congestion from RSV has hung around for weeks for all of us. The baby and the toddler are still intermittently coughing and wheezy now nearly a month on. Horrible.

Klingfilm · 10/12/2023 20:27

Pneumonia does take a long time to get over. NICE guidelines say it can take up to 6 months!

Thing is I don't think I ever had pneumonia, I feel no different unless the pneumonia was viral I guess...

Oh no! That does sound awful, it is a bugger to get rid of it seems!

Why are asked a couple of people I know who had covid previously are now struggling to shake of what would of been a few days of normal cold,
covid affects your immune system for ages

Yeah Covid does but mine wasn't Covid, it's crazy it seems there's a bug going about causing similar symptoms! The wheeze does scare me a lot but again I think it will just run it's course

I've been ill on and off since September. Can't believe it, felt very like Covid, tested neg every time then it got to the no smell, taste stage and morphed into something else coughing up, GP said they thought it had been covid and turned into an infection. They said lateral flow not picking up. Started being sick on ocassions with cough, painful sinuses, ears, bowel issues but I do have IBS but big flare up. Have had antibiotic twice which cleared chesty issues but I'm completely knackered and just can't get over the lack of energy. How can something have been there since September?

Mrsgreen100 · 11/12/2023 11:13

It's crazy isn't it! That does sound awful...I've only took one course of anti biotics and not trying to go back to my GP again as this is probably most likely viral

Just go back to the GP. If the antibiotics didn’t work that tells them something so they know what to try next. Don’t fuck around with not being able to breathe properly.

CornishPorsche · 13/12/2023 10:37

@emilylouisex1 go back to the GP. I'm seeing mine again this afternoon - I've now got a productive cough and pain in sinuses with green and yellow phlegm....

QueenOfThorns · 13/12/2023 10:39

This is very interesting! I thought I’d had two colds in quick succession, but it’s probably just the same one dragging on. I haven’t had the sore throat, but DD has, she’s been ill for about the same length of time and she hardly ever gets ill.

I did a Covid test a few weeks ago and another yesterday (I have a routine hospital appointment this morning) - both negative.

I have some snot, but it’s mostly just constant coughing and feeling crap. I’ve been coughing so much that my eyelids look all swollen and I have a banging headache. I was just feeling grateful to get this out of the way before Christmas, but it sounds as though it might still be hanging on then Xmas Sad

rockingbird · 13/12/2023 10:43

Both myself and my son have had something similar. We thought we were on the mend but it came back worse 😬 son has been off school all week and I had to get him antibiotics for his chest infection and back on asthma pumps. Knocked me sideways so get how you're feeling. I've had many friends also suffering the same so definitely something going round. I hope you feel better soon.

Oh I'm not breathless at all! My breathing is fine, it's just the wheeze that's scaring me and that's why im so confused because I can breath absolutely fine

Mine started with green stuff but since anti biotics it's just clear now, I don't want to keep pestering GP I see them so often it's not even normal how often I see them. Really want to try and get rid of this by itself! I'm not breathless though at all

So amoxicillin this time (doxycycline last time) and a sputum sample provided for culture.

If this doesn't work by next week / the sputum sample is negative, they're putting me on the 2wk pathway because I'm an ex smoker.

I gave up years ago and was a minimal smoker at the best of time (mostly in the pub, rarely outside of weekends) so I'm not too concerned, but they want to be thorough which is fantastic.

My doctor told me if the first round doesn't work, it's viral... why did they prescribe another set?
Hopefully this clears up for you!

I read an article earlier that was discussing that whooping cough seems to be doing the rounds. It can drag on for months. Do your symptoms match that op? Whatever it is I hope it improves for you soon. It’s so tiring when you have a constant cough.

CornishPorsche · 13/12/2023 16:18

@emilylouisex1 bevause I'm running a new fever and whilst it's been a dry cough for weeks, I'm now producing volumes of vile smelling and tasting green and yellow sputum.... So they suspect it's a new infection on top of the one or ones I had until now.

dontforgetme · 13/12/2023 16:19

I am on week 9 of a cold/flu virus. I've had 'flu' twice in that time, lasting a week each time and in between the 'flu' weeks I have a stinking cold.

NotExactlySuits · 13/12/2023 16:22

Lastminutebride · 10/12/2023 14:03

Yes, I’m on week 4 now. Didn’t know it was possible to produce so much snot. Not feeling particularly unwell anymore, just snotty and a slight cough.

This is exactly the same as me, I'm also on week 4. Snotty, sinus pain, feeling generally rubbish but not that acute phase of really ill feeling that you get at the start of a virus. Mine began after a vomiting bug so that's been a fun month.

Ah! Sorry to hear that!! I hope you get better soon. So rubbish especially at this time of year no one wants to be sick especially when it just drags. I have no fever currently so I suspect mine is still viral.
