Suffering greatly with yet another UTI, please is there anyone out there that knows what else I can do?

This is my 4th UTI in 8 wks and by far the worse. I have been on strong antibiotics since Tuesday(so I have had 4 complete days worth) and there is no sign of a let off. Tonight it is really bad and I'm going round the bend.

I am on antibiotics drinking a fair amount of cranberry juice, loads of water and taking paracetemol and Ibuprofen regulary too. Does anyone else have any tricks up their sleeves that works for them.

I did phone the district nurse about an hour ago and explained my symptoms and she said if its still bad tomorrow call the oncall Dr. Not looking forward for the night, so even if you cant tell me what else I can do then just try and humour me and try and take my mind off how Im feeling at the mo.

Poor you. Sorry you feel so rough. A few years ago I had a run of nasty UTIs. I ended up buying these cranberry tablets from a mail order catalogue (sorry, can't remember the name). They did seem to work, am sure somewhere like Holland and Barrett would stock them.

I know this doesn't help in any way at the moment, though! Hope the ABs kick in soon.

Blimey that's awful. I'm sorry you're having such a hard time. I get UTIs occasionally and they're horrible. If the antibiotics haven't kicked in yet, perhaps they're the wrong type for your infection. I suggest you see the doctor again. Did you have a urine sample tested?

Yes I had 2 different urine samples taken, both came back showing that there seemed to be everything in it to suggest a UTI but somehow they were both unclean samples so they couldnt pescribe a percific(sp) one so they gave me the strongest one I could take on pescription.

sitting in a warm bath with some bicarb of soda used to help me, think it neutralises the acid/alkaline balance or something. and the old live yoghurt on a tampax trick does help rebalance your internal bacteria, which can be out of whack after infection/antibio and leave you open to another attack.

oh, and i used to drink cranberry juice by the bucketful too, but you're already doing that i assume!!!

Have found the warm bath excrutiating and awful, I had extreme urges to push, almost like childbirth.

Yes, a whole litre today, yesterday a whole litre of bluberry (as I was told that is good for you too).

Have just called the oncall Dr, as I am really really suffering, hopefully he / she will contact me in an hr!!!!!

This may or may not help but I used to have lots of UTI's as a child and into my teenage years so I know the symptoms and they are very similar to bladder spasms that I suffered when pregnant. Maybe if the AB's don't work this time, go back to the doctor and ask if this is a possiblity. I had anti-spasmodic drugs and it cleared up in no time. Also, if you are taking AB's and suffering unwanted side effects (like thrush or upset stomach) then taking acidopholus (available from any health food shop) works miracles.
Really hope you feel better soon, try sleeping in a sitting position with a hot water bottle between your legs - that used to help me.

I am having an awful time at the mo, (had a minor op in June and since then can't pee, so I have a suprapubic catheter)So I know about bladder spasms and I dont think that this is them. just had it basically.

You poor thing - well I hope the doctor calls you back soon and that you get things sorted.

I had this too last year... horrible.

I was told by someone on MN and my GP that cranberry should NOT be taken if the infection was present as it irritates your sore bladder and prolongs the pain.

Cranberry is for taking for prevention, not cure.

I felt a lot better when I just drank water and stopped the cranberry.

Ooh yes, that rings a bell for me, too. I belive the 'properties' of the cranberry are supposed to stick to the wall of your bladder, thus preventing bacteria from sticking and infection developing. Maybe best to invest in cranberry tablets once this bout has cleared up.

Sounds like you are doing this already, but drink fluids (and avoid cranberry now, it will just irritate) by the bucketful! I have had some really bad ones before and I know how you feel. But the more you flush out your system (sorry, bad pun) with mild fluids (I would only have water or maybe herbal tea), the better you will feel. really hope you feel better soon.

Well I was told by the urology nurse to either drink cranberry or bluberry, so many different opinions, you never know which one to believe!. I will ask the oncall Dr when they ring, they said he should ring within the hr and so far its been 35mins!

Just really cheesed off that its now 4 days into the infecion and I feel worse today then I did at the beginning.

I had the latest of many about 2 weeks ago. It's terrible - I feel so sorry for you. Does it feel like you're peeing ground glass? Is the pain worse about 5 minutes after weeing? Can you get a stronger painkiller? Most important: do you have fever and/or backache? you're doing all the things I normally do for my UTIs, including the cranberry, drinking tons of water, the hot bath trick, the hot water bottle trick... You sound as if you need to see a doc. Hope he or she contacts you soon!

cranberry juice has stacks of sugar which may feed the infection. My mum has bllader cancer and recurring UTI's as a result - Royal mardens advice is cranberry powder (from health food shop) with water taken last thing at night (it sits in bladder and works better). It is scientifically proven to stop infection cells sticking to bladder wall I beleive.

My advice probably already said Water, water then some more water then some more water at least a large glass every hour.

sounds like you're on teh worng AB to me - not always about the strongest one but the one which it is susceptible to.

Have just had a Nurse call, took all my details and she is now going to get the Dr to ring!

Yes I feel all of those things esp the back ache

If doc doesn't appear soon, can you get treatment at a hospital or will you end up sitting for hours in triage?
