Suffering greatly with yet another UTI, please is there anyone out there that knows what else I can do?

This is my 4th UTI in 8 wks and by far the worse. I have been on strong antibiotics since Tuesday(so I have had 4 complete days worth) and there is no sign of a let off. Tonight it is really bad and I'm going round the bend.

I am on antibiotics drinking a fair amount of cranberry juice, loads of water and taking paracetemol and Ibuprofen regulary too. Does anyone else have any tricks up their sleeves that works for them.

I did phone the district nurse about an hour ago and explained my symptoms and she said if its still bad tomorrow call the oncall Dr. Not looking forward for the night, so even if you cant tell me what else I can do then just try and humour me and try and take my mind off how Im feeling at the mo.

Thanks

The nearest hosp is 45mins away, would rather see what the Dr says first, The thought of the journey just makes me shudder and I would worry about wetting myself - managed to do it twice yesterday!

Oh no, don't put yourself through that! But you've got to see a doctor and do a urine analysis.

mawbroon · 03/08/2007 23:10

Hi directline. I suffered terribly from this problem around 12 years ago. Docs just kept giving me antibiotics which didn't really do the trick and then I saw one doc who recommended this book Understanding Cystitis which really helped me. I couldn't tell you when the last attack I had was because now I recognise the very early feeling and get downing the pints of water. I know it is really hard, but try to drink a pint of water every hour. I also found that holding on as long as I could between pees meant that the pee was more dilute rather than going all the time and exposing the tubes to more concentrated urine. You probably don't feel up to reading about it right now, but I really can recommend the book for when you are feeling better.

mawbroon · 03/08/2007 23:14

I don't mean to alarm you, but backache sounds like it might be heading towards your kidney. Make sure you mention the backache to your doc when he calls.

TheArmadillo · 03/08/2007 23:15

I know a couple of people who find it gets much worse when drinking citrus drinks (orange juice is the worst - but anything that contains citrus, even the minute amounts in cheap squash, aggravates it).

Don't know if that's specific to them, but cutting it out made a huge difference in the frequency and strength of the attacks.

Novacane · 03/08/2007 23:38

If you are no better on day 4 on A/B's they really aren't working for you, the type you are on obv doesn't kill the type of infection you have.

Definately go back to the dr's and they should give you some more pain relief if you are in a lot of pain.

Hope you get better soonx

directline · 06/08/2007 17:22

Thanks to all that answered, The oncall DR suggested I went to the hospital and have another urine test and they could change my ABs. Well to cut a long story short they admitted me and I was finally discharged today. Not sure if infection has completely gone but I am a lot more comfortable. I have some wonderful painkillers which knock me out. They are not going to test my urine until thursday.

They did change the ABs and took loads of blood.

Hi - long term treatment to prevent recurrence - try daily Cranberry Tablets and acidophilus powders in drinks daily - poss anti-candida diet? Also - post sex hygiene - big pee and wipe FRONT to BACK - kills that post coital glow but does help.....

directline · 08/08/2007 10:09

Thanks Titch, already do most of those things , will look into the anti candida diet, my MIL has been on at me about that for years - she swears by it.

I am really really suffering tonight, I really dont know what to do with myself.

Thank goodness I have appointment tomorrow Consultant at 9am.

Cant believe I could be suffering this much, 4 days of one kind of AB and almost 6 days of the other. Something needs to be done!

I tried a bath but thought I was going to give birth to something - what i dont know. Have got a hot water bottle at the mo and have taken my strong painkillers trouble is they kind of knock me out(at least then I wont be suffering!)

You may have kidney stones.

PLEASE phone NHS24 and ask to speak to someone or get an out of hours appointment.

This should have cleared. From your OP, you've had an infection for nearly 9 weeks.

You should ask for a scan.

My sister had cystitis that wouldn't clear.

Well, she had stones in causing a blockage from her kidney to one of her ureters and needed ultrasound to break them down.

directline · 08/08/2007 19:04

They gave me a scan on Monday morning, kidneys are ok. Although they didnt scan my bladder because it was empty!!!!. I didnt find this out till later and couldnt quite believe it, I think the scanner saw my catheter and presumed I was still all rigged up and I wasnt.

I am so fed up with this I could cry!

I find drinking lots of weak lemon barley helps but does nothing for the actual infection just makes you more comfortable iyswim.cranberry is not good in a situation where infection is there as it stops the anti biotics getting to the bladder walls and just flushes them out.weak soluble aspirin helps with the pain but you really need to get to the bottom of what is causing the recurrences and which exact bacteria you have.I have every sympathy with you.I have had a kidney transplant and was plagued with utis at the start

lalaa · 08/08/2007 19:10

Massive sympathies.
I had lots of recurring UTIs when I was younger and was eventually referred to a urologist. We broke the cycle by me having an antibiotic which I took before sex, followed by immediate showering afterwards, plus big wee, etc as already mentioned here.

I still have to have one anti-biotic after each time I have sex, plus a shower immediately and a wee - it kind of breaks the mood but better than getting another infection.

I also found out, to my cost, that drinking fluids which have sugar in them is a sure fire way to make things a whole lot worse. Lemonade is an abosolute killer.

You need to make yourself a really difficult customer at your meeting with the consultant. Do not get fobbed off! Best of luck.

directline · 08/08/2007 19:10

I have just managed to wet myself. Stupid thing is I cant normally pee!!!! Just my luck

directline · 08/08/2007 19:11

Showers are just tooooooooooo pain

OP posts:
Idreamofdaleks · 08/08/2007 19:11

Biological washing powder can provoke UTIs - do you use non-bio?

noddyholder · 08/08/2007 19:13

Lemon barley neutralise the urine so painful peeing stops please get some I can't be without it when I have an infection.Agree re the sex thing too it really aggravates this

Pinkchampagne · 08/08/2007 19:14

Poor you, you are really suffering with all this aren't you?
No great advice, but lots of sympathy.

directline · 08/08/2007 19:15

Yes we do , DH says "well we have been using them for 15yrs!" He funny in what we use! Surely I cant get a resistance to that now can I?

OP posts:
lalaa · 08/08/2007 21:04

in your position, i'd be trying everything and anything. dh wil just have to get used to new soap powder!

lemonaid · 08/08/2007 21:29

When I had a bad UTI in France I was prescribed Spasfon as well as the ABs, which seemed to help (but it won't make much difference if they don't get you onto the right ABs).

In terms of prevention, the thing that made the most difference to me (as others have mentioned) is that now every time we have sex I go and pee immediately afterwards. It kind of spoils the cuddly atmosphere, but I've not had a UTI since I started doing that.

Kewcumber · 08/08/2007 21:38

TMI Lemonaid!

My mum had a particularly severe UTI once and it was put donw to a kidney stone block. Some small stones dont; appear on teh scan - they put a stent in and it seemed to do the job.

lemonaid · 09/08/2007 08:32

Somehow I feel that once you've got on to discussing the exact state of the inside of your bladder very little else can possibly be TMI...

justaphase · 09/08/2007 09:01

Can I join this thread please. I am absolutely certain to get an infection EVERY TIME I have sex. No amount of washing, going to the bathroom before and after etc. helps. I am still trying to get rid of the current one, second course of ABs now.

Makes TTC a major problem too.
