This is my 4th UTI in 8 wks and by far the worse. I have been on strong antibiotics since Tuesday(so I have had 4 complete days worth) and there is no sign of a let off. Tonight it is really bad and I'm going round the bend.

I am on antibiotics drinking a fair amount of cranberry juice, loads of water and taking paracetemol and Ibuprofen regulary too. Does anyone else have any tricks up their sleeves that works for them.

I did phone the district nurse about an hour ago and explained my symptoms and she said if its still bad tomorrow call the oncall Dr. Not looking forward for the night, so even if you cant tell me what else I can do then just try and humour me and try and take my mind off how Im feeling at the mo.

Thanks

Just to let you kow I'm back and touch wood everything seems ok. The urologist found an ulcer in my bladder and the end of the catheter had started to inbed into the wall of my bladder. So glad itcan now perhaps start to look forward to the holiday. Lets hope I get no more UTIs, although my urine is showing nitrates etc they are hoping its just by having the catheter fitted.

OMG, direct! I hope they gave you some good medication for the pain. That sounds awful and I truly hope you get better soon.

Hi,
We spoke on your other thread, I'm the person who also has a "dead" bladder. Would it be worth giving intermittent self catheterization another go. I know its difficult, but having had experience of both, i found it to be the best option.

Pinkchampagne · 11/08/2007 19:33

Really pleased you are feeling better, DL!

When I get back from America, they are going to take the catheter out and we are trying without it. They are hoping for the next 3wks resting it and giving me these tablets that meant to relax your bladder then it may start to kick start into working. They think this because when I was having all the pain and bleeding I was wetting myself. So the theory is hopefully I should be able to go again one day, Pity I cant try before I go away but the urologist has told me to rest my bladder completely and not keep any urine in there, so the ulcer can mend. I think if I could pass small amounts throughout the day I could cope with self catheterising but I was going so often it hurt.

I too am really pleased, cant believe how rough and run down I had been feeling. Girls keep coming upto me and grinning, even commented on how good my urine looks(bet MIL would of had a fit if she had heard!)

THis might not be necessary anymore, but have you had a culture grown from the urine sample? Not all antibiotics are effective on all bacteria. Nitrites is a very general test, my mother had 4 courses of a/b before we realised what was going on. In the end there was just one a/b that could help with the bacteria she had (picked up in the hosp in the first place - it belonged in MRSA family).

Well, its been a month now since I last posted, had my holiday, most of it good, only a few mishaps!!! And managed to get frisked by security, as soon as I said I had a catheter she waved me on! bonus .

I went for my 4th Sept appointment which was a bit of a nightmare, as when they tried to clamp the catheter, I just managed to wet myself anywhere and everywhere! Well I tried for a couple of days without much success so the Nurse told me to start using the catheter again and go on to free drainage, plus I had another UTI!!!!!

Well, I spoke to the Nurse today, and she is going to admit me next Wednesday, they are going to take the catheter out completely and see how I get on. I'm shocked, almost speechless, I dont have a problem with them taking the catheter out, I'm just concerned that if I cant pee, then they want me to self catheterise!!!! And I really dont like doing that I feel its some kind of abuse!

Sorry to waffle on, just in a bit of shock!

Hi op, how your life going now????
I have a really bad uti at the moment and just read your whole thread. Are you catheter free now? This thread is 13 years.plus, so would be great to hear how things have changed since then.....
