In brief....Ds has had a horrid cough for 6mnths now...
I have always treated him with homeopathic remedies...he has never had any form of medicine, calpol etc.
On Wednesday I took him to the docs who thought it wise to give him a five day course of antibiotics as this cough has gone on so long.I hated the idea, but he is not improving at all,...so we started the amoxicillin yesterday.
In a day he has become floppy, miserable & has been very ,very sick twice. He also has the runs which is I guess the sorbitol (wretched stuff) in the antibiotics..
He also has a temp of 38.5
Should I stop them right now as he seems to be reacting so badly to them or ??????

Cant bear it...very & need some advice please.

I very much doubt it is the amoxycillan if anything it made my 2 hyperactive.

Lullabunnyloo · 06/04/2007 18:51

the cough was v.bad.....he started it in October but it has got worse to the point that he is choking on the mucus. His chest is clear though.
I avoid docs like the plague...but ds was starting to get run down & tired from disturbed sleep...so i was hounded by dh into taking him.
He has only been sick once before when he had scarlett fever at 1 year.

The Sorbitol contents alone freak me out...i cried in the docs & when i gave him his first spoonful.

Hi lully

I found this on side effects , but it may just be the sorbitol - my two both reacted badly to it.
Can you ring NHS direct?

pooka · 06/04/2007 19:01

If you are concerned, then go see a doctor tomorrow. Emdoc if necessary. TBH I doubt that it's the antibiotics. Perhaps it's just a coincidence. There are still a lot of bugs going around. Maybe he's picked up a virus? Worth checking IMO.

lulumama · 06/04/2007 19:04

bless him

definitely ring the NHS direct line

i would say possibly to give him the rest of the ABs, as they might well do the trick and get rid of his cough..and once you have started a course, you do need to finish them

cannot imagine there is a huge amount of sorbitol in them, maybe i am wrong, enough to cause a reaction in a sensitive child, no doubt...

and cuddles from his friend Babylulu x

If your DS has had a cough for six months then he could have a really nasty infection by now. All the symptoms you are describing could well be because of a nasty infection rather than the ingrediants in the ab. Don't stop the ab without medical advice, I think you need to ring NHS direct and probably see an emergency doctor.

pooka · 06/04/2007 19:11

Yes - should have addded that think probably a bad idea to stop the course of abs unless under further medical advice.

Lullabunnyloo · 06/04/2007 19:18

Have rung nhs direct....they have told me to stop them at once.

What else have they said lully?

Lullabunnyloo · 06/04/2007 19:21

Each 5ml dose contains 752 mg sorbitol

OP posts:
FlossALump · 06/04/2007 19:22

Please also see a doctor as these are all signs of infection.

Lullabunnyloo · 06/04/2007 19:23

Main concern was if blue, had rash, not passing urine, bringing up green liquid etc..or if unresponsive.
I think they arev satisfied that it is just an allergic reaction, but i'm to ring back if there are any changes.

I'm sorry, I won't post again but your little boy has a high temperature and a long term cough. If he is intolerant/allergic to these ab's he really needs to be on an alternative.

Lullabunnyloo · 06/04/2007 19:26

He's so hot 38.7......but he does run enormous temps...

i'm going to give him a tepid bath & then go to bed with him in my bed

thanks everyone

OP posts:
lulumama · 06/04/2007 19:28

bless him, tepid sponging should help..keep us updated x

FlossALump · 06/04/2007 19:31

can he have any paracetamol to try and bring the temperature down?

I know I said last post, but all the symptoms you are describing occured to my DS when he had a very nasty infection last year. I'm worried that this is being misdiagnosed as a reaction when it could be the abs will really help him.

Is he managing to eat and drink well? I'm not a dr but I am a nurse so I do understand a bit about infections and also reactions to drugs.

SillyMillysMummy · 06/04/2007 19:39

sorry, you have probably already gone to bed but just thought i would say, hugs to you both and go along to walk in centre or emergency doc if you arent happy with him. When my dd was first poorly i waited and waited before i decided to go and she ended up v v poorly and now on constant antibiotics, i will never wait again (now have open access to 2 childrens wards inthe area though so its easier), the sickness could be a symptom of the temperature though, when dd got her high temps (over 40 degrees mostly) she was immediately sick. HTH

FlossALump · 06/04/2007 20:04

I hope you get a good night and your DS is better, please do let us know. I'm really quite worried!

misdee · 06/04/2007 20:07

i think it sounds like he has an infection. there is a cough/cold doing the rounds, resyultinmg high temops, tiredness, miserable, stromache upset. all my dd's have had it.

Lullabunnyloo · 07/04/2007 08:50

Thanks everyone
Ds reluctantly had a tepid bath & then slept in the bed with me all night.(i havn't actually slept yet as sponged him all night.
He drunk nearly a litre of water throughout the night..so at least he's keeping hydrated.
He still has a temp of ..38.5...but asked for food at 6.45 as hadn't eaten since 1pm yesterday.
He is very congested & coughing up mucus...but his usual chatty self..which is a relief.
I have just called the emergency doc for a house call as I would like a second opinion & someone to look him over for me.

Having a quiet snivvle while dh reads him a story

Thankyou to everyone who has posted, your advice & care is much appreciated.
