Ds 2.8 having antibiotics....Urgent advice needed please!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

In brief....Ds has had a horrid cough for 6mnths now...
I have always treated him with homeopathic remedies...he has never had any form of medicine, calpol etc.
On Wednesday I took him to the docs who thought it wise to give him a five day course of antibiotics as this cough has gone on so long.I hated the idea, but he is not improving at all,...so we started the amoxicillin yesterday.
In a day he has become floppy, miserable & has been very ,very sick twice. He also has the runs which is I guess the sorbitol (wretched stuff) in the antibiotics..
He also has a temp of 38.5
Should I stop them right now as he seems to be reacting so badly to them or ??????

Cant bear it...very & need some advice please.

have you given him calpol and/or nurofen?

lissielouwithbunnyears · 07/04/2007 15:51

or medised?

foxinsocks · 07/04/2007 15:56

if you haven't got some (calpol/nurofen) go and get some now (or get your dh to get some) so you don't have to chase around for an open pharmay on Easter day tomorrow! As misdee said, there is a nasty flu/coldy bug doing the rounds - maybe he has it/maybe he doesn't but either way, giving him that sort of pain relief regularly will not only help him feel better but it should help bring his temp down.

misdee · 07/04/2007 16:01

he has done well to get 2.8 with no antui biotics or calpol wetc, why wont you give him some calpol? i think lloyds pharmancies do a colour free version.

Nemo2007 · 07/04/2007 16:08

If his chest was clear why did the gp give him antibiotics?? Sounds likely to be a viral infection all mine have had this lately but do agree maybe some calpolor nurofen is called for to bring his temp down.

lulumama · 07/04/2007 16:11

=i hope he gets better and gets seen soon x

of course they dont cure but they help with any pain as well as lowering temperature.

foxinsocks · 07/04/2007 16:17

he's not comfortable - he's ill. And you can get calpol that is sugared rather than sugar free. It's pain relief as much as anything else and can help lower a temperature which can be important in children who have a tendency to get high temperatures.

I know I feel a shedload better if I have flu/v bad cold once I've taken a nurofen/paracetamol.

Besides, if she goes to hospital or the doctor, I guarantee one of the first things they'll ask (wrt to his temp) is whether she's tried calpol or nurofen to lower it.

misdee · 07/04/2007 16:19

yesi was winding up the young saturday boy asking for paracetamol suspension WITH sugar. he didnt have a clue. found one though its getting harder to get, and it has colourings grrr.

FlossALump · 07/04/2007 16:33

There are also suppositories - harder to get but a very effective method.

I see what you are saying about high temp ENTP - but a temp of 40 need to be brought down, urgently. Paracetamol or ibuprofen will both do this.

I have been taught at work not to always worry about treating a temp of less than 38, but tbh most of the time the pat feels so crap that they need the medication. The evidence to suggest this is not adhered to or believed by, ime the majority of drs.

LilRedWG · 07/04/2007 17:47

Lully - hugs for you and DS. xxx

Lullabunnyloo · 07/04/2007 19:19

So pleased to say ds had a three hr sleep this afternoon & woke up a different child. His temp has subsided..101....he has been up playing, laughing & singing...more like my lovely ds.
He is currently eating his tea with relish & has asked to sleep in his bed tonight.
Hopefully, hopefully he is on the mend

really glad to hear that lully

McCadburysDreamyegg · 07/04/2007 19:25

Haven't quite read all the post but most and I have to say I can quite understand why a GP won;ty come out to a sick child. I would rather travel to where the dr was any day. He has nothing in my house except the bag he walks in with and much more in his practice especially if he is a prescribing practice.

Lula hop you DS gets better soon, I really hate it when the DC's are poorly.

LilRedWG · 08/04/2007 09:04

Fantastic Lully - hope he's well enough to enjoy his eggs

paulaplumpbottom · 08/04/2007 11:10

How is he today?

Lullabunnyloo · 08/04/2007 11:25

He had a reasonable night apart from the coughing fits.
He woke up happily, cool & seemingly much better.
He ate breakfast...but has been crying lots & is very fragile.
Taking this very easy today.

Thanks everyone xxx

bless him....hope he is turning the corner now x

FlossALump · 08/04/2007 12:33

Hope he stays well Lula, even if he stays well over the bank holiday its probably worth a trip back to your normal GP next week to say what happened (ie with antibiotics, how unwell he was, and the out of hrs GP not coming out).
